Srila Prabhupada has given us a very valuable slogan; Preaching is the essence, books are the basis, utility is the principle and purity is the force. He also showed by his own example, and instructions, just how essential he considered this first item of preaching.

In life we are accustomed to thinking either of the material or the spiritual energy. There are so many literatures which fill ourthoughts with the material energy--newspapers, magazines, novels, etc. Our thinking, which is now absorbed in these literatures, must be transferred to the Vedic literatures.
The great sages, therefore, have written so many Vedic literatures such as the Puranas, etc. The Puranas are not imaginative; theyare historical records.

When the living entity prefers to misuse his independence and glide down towards nescience, the all-merciful Lord first of all tries to protect him from the trap, but when the living entity persists in gliding down to hell, the Lord helps him to forget his real position.
