Think problems as speed bumps

Rather than labeling the issues that come up during a typical work day as problems, think of them as speed bumps (speed breakers). An actual speed bump, as you know, is a low bump in a road designed to get your attention and slow you down. Depending on how you approach and deal with the bump, it can be a miserable, uncomfortable, even damaging experience, or it can simply be a temporary slow down – no big deal.

If you step on the gas, speed up, and tighten the wheel, for example, you’ll hit the b

In life, we have essentially two psychological modes that we are in most of the time: reactive and responsive. The reactive mode is the one that feels stressful. In it, we feel pressured and are quick to judge. We lose perspective and take things personally. We’re annoyed, bothered, and frustrated.

Needless to say, our judgment and decision making capacity is severely impaired when we are in a reactive state of mind. We make quick decisions that we often regret. We annoy other people and tend to

Remember to Acknowledge

You can acknowledge others in many ways. When someone calls you, acknowledge the call. When they send you something, remember to say thank you. When someone does a good job, say so. When they apologize, acknowledge that too.

It’s especially important to acknowledge acts of kindness – doing so reinforces the act and encourages more of the same. We all benefit.

Almost everyone loves to be acknowledged. We love to have our phone calls returned, to be told we are doing a great job, to be thanked for

Let Us Shape Ourselves First

There was a millionaire who was bothered by severe eye pain. He consulted so many physicians and was getting his treatment done. He did not stop consulting galaxy of medical experts; he consumed heavy loads of drugs and underwent hundreds of injections.

But the ache persisted with great vigor than before. At last a monk who was supposed to be an expert in treating such patients was called for by the millionaire. The monk understood his problem and said that for sometime he should concentrate only

Before We Give Any Criticism

A young couple move into a new neighborhood. The next morning, while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hang the wash outside.

"That laundry is not very clean", she said, "she doesn't know how to wash properly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap".

Her husband looked on, but remained silent. Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments.

About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line

Avoid Weatherproofing

Just as we can weatherproof a home by looking for cracks, leaks, and imperfections, we can also weatherproof our relationships, even our lives, by doing the very same thing. Essentially, weatherproofing means that you are on the careful lookout for what needs to be fixed or repaired. It’s finding the cracks and flaws, and either trying to fix them, or at least point them out to others. This tendency encourages you to think about what’s wrong with everything and everyone --- what you don’t like.

Defeating Maya

To become Krishna conscious means that one has to completely conquer over the influence of the mighty material energy within one's heart.  It is not possible to accomplish this by one's own strength because the material energy is simply too powerful. However, if one will take shelter of guru and Krishna, by their grace it becomes quite easy to win the war and defeat the maya or illusion that is so solidly entrenched within one's heart. For such a conquering hero the doorway back to home, back to

The driver of the car is always important, either on the car or without the car but people in general are giving importance to the car only. They have no knowledge of the driver. The car requires petrol and the driver requires nice food. So people in general, when they see that we are not giving petrol to the driver, they are surprised…

Morning walk

Tuesday, 11 May 1971

Just before dawn, Srila Prabhupada's car pulled up and parked near the rock pool at the northern end of Bondi Beach. Bondi had been the most popular of Sydney's surfing beaches since the turn of the century. The kilometre-long crescent of sand attracted thousands of Sydneysiders in the hot summer months. This late autumn morning, however, it was deserted.

As barely seen waves broke, the sky lightened imperceptibly behind the ridge of cliffs and houses. Srila Prabhu

Cooking class

Bali-mardana and Vegavan were assigned the task of cooking Prabhupada's lunch. Determined to make a better effort than the previous day, they decided to make kacauris, and entered the kitchen early with the handwritten recipe.

During his stay in Malaysia, Prabhupada had met an Indian gentleman whose wife was from Mathura. She had cooked kacauris for Srila Prabhupada which were so perfectly made that Prabhupada asked Bali-mardana and Vegavan to learn how to cook them from her.

Initiation ceremony

Philip: When I came up to receive my beads, Srila Prabhupada asked me whether I was Australian. I answered no, that I was born in England. He asked me my age and I answered that I was eighteen. "So young!" he said. Prabhupada handed me my beads and said: "So, your name is Kurma dasa. Kurma is another name of Krsna. You are Kurma dasa, servant of Krsna."

Initiation

The devotees had originally expected that perhaps three or four of them would be initiated. Earlier that morning, however, the news had spread quickly that Prabhupada would be initiating practically everyone in the temple -- 16 devotees in all.

The young men and women sat nervously before Srila Prabhupada. The men were shaven-headed and wore dhotis made of cheap synthetic peach-coloured material. The ladies were wrapped in saffron saris fashioned from the same simple cloth. Those who we

Prabhupada cooking

By the time Srila Prabhupada returned from his bath, applied marks of Vaisnava tilak, and chanted his noon-time gayatri mantra, his lunch was ready. Upananda had cooked the dal, rice and vegetables at the temple, and had sent them over to the house. While Prabhupada bathed, Bali-mardana -- who couldn't cook -- had frantically attempted to make chapatis, but the apartment was equipped with only an electric stove. As Srila Prabhupada sat, Vegavan ran in with the first hot chapati

Gradual Process..

Question: What if I can only chant Hare Krsna right now, but I can't do much service?Answer: Chanting Hare Krsna is service. However, when you are chanting “Hare Krsna,” you are also requesting service. After chanting, don't be surprised when you are awarded more service. And then when Krsna gives you service, there may be a question about how much service you should take.On the one hand, Krsna advises in the Gita (18.66) that we simply surrender to Him. And this is actually the main business of

Biography of H . H. Jayapataka Swami

The success of His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in spreading Krsna Consciousness around the world starting from North America basically is definitely an amazing achievement for a great personality empowered by the Lord Himself  to fulfill an almost impossible mission in Kali Yuga in a very short time, but this success of Srila Prabhupada is also because of the inspiration that His Divine Grace have given to young people in the western societies during a very important
