Love

atmendriya-priti-vancha—tare bali ‘kama’
krsnendriya-priti-iccha dhare ‘prema’ nama
The desire to gratify one’s own senses is kama [lust], but the desire to please the senses of Lord Krishna is prema [love].

Here is a rough transcript of a talk about love given by a first class devotee, which I recently listened to.

Love is something not found in the material world.  A rumor, a lie or a joke.  What they call love in the material world is not love.  It's desire, it's want, it's need,  but love is something  else.
The love in the material world tends to be a business deal.  I want your body, you want the same thing.  Man wants sex, woman wants security and relationship.  It is all about our mutual and corresponding needs.  And especially these days, the deal is increasingly tentative.  Lets see how it works out.  If not, then that's that.  There's not commitment there's, only me and my needs, me and my wants
If my needs and wants are not satisfied, then "I used to love you" or "I never loved you."  "I realized that we have to admit to one another that its not working." Whatever it is, we want to back out of this deal, it's become lousy.   Suzie down block is offering me more.
We generally hear that love is sublime, it lasts and lasts.  Like a diamond, it lasts forever.  That ideal is not realistic in the material world.  If somebody is advertising true love, you wont find it in the material world.
If somehow you are so unstatistically fortunate to find what seems to be true love, giving and deep profound commitment, a lasting bond, still one of us will die.  She dies on me.  I die on her.  What happens to your eternal love?  It disintegrates, and all that's left is a picture and you have to find someone else. Even if you find another one, they will also be lost.
Love is not found in this material world.  Its the place where we are thinking that  I'm something I'm not.  Its the mode in which we automatically, unthinkingly think.  That's why I'm thinking of the needs and wants of this body, the attractiveness of that body, and its wrong.  It's not that the body is who I am.
The body is a shell, or clothes.  If we are self reflective, then we come to the point of understanding that I'm the experiencer, the perceiver.  I experience the touch of my hand, I experience hearing the sound of music through my ears.  I'm thinking I'm this body which is a peice of garbage.  nitrogen, calcium, blood,  mucus.  That's my girlfriend, that's my boyfrined.  Thinking in terms of the body, it just looks good because there's a thin layer of skin.  Peel that off, and its no longer Valentine's day, its Halloween.  On the platform of the body there's only frustration.
There are thrills, but they're attached to frustration.  you can't buy one without purchasing the other.
Spiritual consciousness, higher understanding, is understanding who I am, and who is the source.  If there's sunlight, there must be a sun, if there's rain there must be a cloud, if there's energy there must be an energetic source.  That's what we mean by Krishna.  Real love then, is when the energy gets in touch with the source of energy.  Then real love can be discovered. That love doesn't have to do with let's make a deal.  I'll rub against you, you against me.  Its profound.
We're looking at fruit in a mirror, and its a mistake.  We have to look on the other side we're looking for Krishna, actually.
