ततः – तत्पश्चात्; शङखाः – शंख; भेर्यः – बड़े-बड़े ढोल, नगाड़े; च – तथा; पणव-आनक – ढोल तथा मृदंग; गोमुखाः – शृंग; सहसा – अचानक; एव – निश्चय ही; अभ्यहन्यन्त – एकसाथ बजाये गये; सः – वह; शब्दः – समवेत स्वर; तुमुलः – कोलाहलपूर्ण; अभवत् – हो गया |

तत्पश्चात् शंख, नगाड़े, बिगुल, तुरही तथा सींग सहसा एकसाथ बज उठे | वह समवेत स्वर अत्यन्त कोलाहलपू

श्लोक 1 . 12
तस्य सञ्जनयन्हर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः |
सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् || १२ ||
सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् || १२ ||
तस्य – उसका; सञ्जयनयन् – बढाते हुए; हर्शम् – हर्ष; कुरु-वृद्धः – कुरुवंश के वयोवृद्ध (भीष्म); पितामहः – पितामह, बाबा; सिंह-नादम् – सिंह की सी गर्जना; विनद्य – गरज कर; उच्चैः - उच्च स्वर से; शङखम् – शंख; दध्मौ – बजाया; प्रताप-वान् – बलशाली |
भावार्थ
तब कुरुवंश के वयोवृद्ध परम प्रतापी एवं वृद्ध पितामह ने सिंह-गर्जना की सी ध्वनि करने वाले अपनेअध्याय 1: कुरुक्षेत्र के युद्धस्थल में सैन्यनिरीक्षण
श्लोक 1 . 11
अयनेषु च सर्वेषु यथाभागमवस्थिताः |
भीष्ममेवाभिरक्षन्तु भवन्तः सर्व एव हि || ११ ||
अयनेषु - मोर्चों में; च - भी; सर्वेषु - सर्वत्र; यथा-भागम् - अपने-अपने स्थानों पर; अवस्थिताः - स्थित; भीष्मम् - भीष्म पितामह की; एव - निश्चय ही; अभिरक्षन्तु - सहायता करनी चाहिए; भवन्तः - आप; सर्वे - सब के सब; एव हि - निश्चय ही ।
भावार्थ
अतएव सैन्यव्यूह में अपने-अपने मोर्चों पर खड़े रहकर आप सभी भीष्म पितामह को पूरी-पूरी सहायता दें । तात्पर्य

We should always think that we are in the modes of ignorance. We are just trying to make progress from ignorance to goodness and then transcend. This is the process of spiritual realization. Nobody should think that we are perfect. We cannot be. God is... Only God is perfect, and we are all imperfect. Even our so-called liberated stage, we are still imperfect.
