The Perils Of Being Over-intelligent

By Kesava Krsna dasa – GRS

If a spiritual master requests a glass of water and the disciple brings some milk instead, thinking it to be a more valuable type of service, it would be considered a classic example of being over-intelligent. Does overuse of our intelligence only refer to practical things like this? If doubt is a symptom of intelligence, what if we become over-intelligent and begin to over-doubt? If we broaden the possibilities further, can one over-estimate, over-discriminate and generally over-react to challenges we face in our devotional lives?

Many of us are accustomed to the intellectual cynicism afforded by ‘free’ democratic societies. The news we read or hear, and judicious endings to court cases are often the work of investigative journalists or police work, who often test the limits of constitutional liberties such as the freedom of speech, expression, the rights to life, to privacy and so on, which favor a decent and dignified existence. When we come to Krsna consciousness, a cultural shock awaits us as we become exposed to the ancient way of obedience to authority, to guru, sadhu and Sastra.

Sometimes Srila Prabhupada discovered that certain traits of western liberty would infiltrate the service attitude, even with good intentions, but would lead him to say ‘over-intelligent,’ with a potential to ‘change’ or ‘spoil’ what he had established. The desire to change something consecrated by the previous acaryas has to be a work of doubt. When an over-doubter sets up a proxy masquerading as the real thing, and in Srila Prabhupada’s name, it is certainly a product of over-intelligence. The reason for these changes are mired in what Srila Prabhupada says is ‘foolishness.’ For instance, Srila Prabhupada gave the example of counterfeit coins. We may handle some counterfeit coins one time or another, but know that not all coins are crooked, whereas a foolish person will conclude that all coins must be counterfeit. In the same way, we may all experience seeing a devotee leave, or have personal difficulties, but we also know not all devotees are suspect. Whereas the doubter will conclude that everyone is fallen except Srila Prabhupada or the acaryas.

Interestingly, Srila Prabhupada also used the term over-intelligent to refer to the modern-day Christians who do not follow the teachings of Jesus. Even more interesting is the fact that the Christians say that all, each and every one of us are fallen sinners except for Jesus himself, thanks to a dubious original sin of biting some fruit by Adam. If we compare this with the idea of all devotees being fallen, whose integrity are open to over-intelligent over-doubting scrutiny, we find a parallel pursued in the guise of over-discrimination. The ramifications of this are quite serious. By doubting the devotees we also doubt the power of Bhakti to uplift them, then we are guilty of the converse – underestimation. If we underestimate the devotees, chances are high we will lessen our respect for the spiritual master too, by underestimating his words which reflect Srila Prabhupada’s teachings on the matter. Predictably, Lord Krsna says in BG.15.19 “Whoever knows Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, without doubting, is the knower of everything. He therefore engages himself in full devotional service to Me, O son of Bharata.” If someone thinks he can render devotional service without the need for a spiritual master by the process of diksha, his service can never be ‘full.’ It can either be partial or zero depending on the severity of deviation.

Srila Prabhupada never doubted the status of any devotee no matter how fallen. He says in BG.9.34 purport: “The devotee, in the beginning, may sometimes fall from the standard, but still he should be considered superior to all other philosophers and yogis.” Even a beginner is a devotee. Elsewhere he writes: “….such an occasional fall down will be stopped in due course, as soon as a devotee is situated in Krsna consciousness.” – BG.9.30 purport. Sometimes a doubter will feel great vindication based on discrimination when, if a devotee falls and may never return even in this lifetime, proves his all-fallen assertions. But the few years we experience here on earth, which seem a long duration of time, has no bearing whatsoever on Krsna’s sense of timing. For the Lord, if a devotee leaves His service for several lifetimes, it is still a temporary fall down. Does Krsna not say – na me bhaktah pranasyati?

‘Once bitten twice shy’ may be the general maxim. Does it mean we should suspect every devotee around us? Some discriminators say we are being naïve if we see only the good in devotees. Are we being naïve if we see only the good in others? Or is this tempered with suspicion we choose to ignore, as a type of selective amnesia, simply for the sake of good relationships? But if we do this, are we not letting our natural feelings come to the fore? A devotee naturally sees the good just as the bumble bee searches for nectar. An intelligent devotee sees but does not see! How so? When he sees the beauty of the moon, he cares not for the pock marks of the craters. When he sees a fire, he sees through the smoke as simply a natural occurrence.

The far-sighted wisdom of Yudhisthira Maharaja made him behave in ways sometimes exasperating and downright out of touch for his brothers. When Bhima and Arjuna urged for swift action, Yudhisthira chose not to make two wrongs into a right. He still respected, nay even loved those of his relatives bent on oppressing him. By kali-yuga calculations he seemed to be over-humble and therefore a coward. Was he? After the big war, King Yudhisthira even maintained the one who faked false homily and affection, disguising his intention to kill by intrigue and sabotage as prodded by his son Duryodhana – Dhrtarastra. A normal person would be glad to see the back of Dhrtarastra. The fact is, Maharaja Yudhisthira intelligently appraised all the wrong doings, but lived his life in an exemplary way. He saw, but did not see the bad. He was a real discriminator.

We have our God-given intelligence created by Krsna, awarded to us so to pave our way home back to Godhead. If we remain simple, and perform our duties without adding or subtracting, changing or spoiling, our service will become an attractive offering. Next time we bring a glass of water according to the specifications of the guru, even an excess quantity will not be too problematic, because the potent remnants will help keep us advancing in such a way as to fulfill the mandate of the Bhagavad Gita, and thus worship Krsna by our intelligence – BG.18.70.

Kesava Krsna dasa – GRS.

Brian David Schwartz, a UF telecommunications sophomore, chows down on Krishna lunch on the steps of Griffin-Floyd Hall on Sept. 3. Students are banned from eating on the stairs to prepare for extra seating renovations. “Having Krishna lunch is a very communal experience,” Schwartz said, “us all eating the same food to the beat of a drum.”

By Alexandra Fernandez, Alligator Staff Writer

Near the steps of Griffin-Floyd Hall, there’s a sign.

“Please do not eat Krishna Lunch on the steps nor inside Griffin Floyd Hall. Thank you very much,” it reads.

Maria Dominicis, a UF nursing senior, said she was annoyed when she first saw it.

When it rains, she prefers sitting on the steps instead of the muddy grass.

“I just think it’s stupid,” the 20-year-old said. “There’s such limited seating in the plaza.”

Limited seating on the Plaza of the Americas will be taken care of in an upcoming plaza renovation, UF spokesman Steve Orlando wrote in an email.

The renovation — headed by the UF Foundation, the fundraising arm of UF that private donations go through — will cost from $1.65 million to $2.1 million, and will bring a student-organization service area, a central presentation platform, additional bench seating, tables and improved Wi-Fi, Orlando said.

The Foundation has partnered with Krishna House to raise funds for the project, said the chaplain and manager of Krishna House, Carl Woodham.

“We have such a long-standing relationship with the university,” he said.

The renovation will also bring a designated area for Krishna Lunch to be served, Woodham said.

The Foundation is also working with UF Libraries to seek support for a combined Plaza of the Americas and Library West entrance renovation, Orlando said.

The renovation doesn’t have a start or end date yet, but the Foundation is working on the official timeline, Orlando said.

The planning was finalized about a year and a half ago, and small modifications have been added since then.

Orlando said this renovation will be beneficial for students and make the plaza more functional and beautiful.

It will ensure people are sitting in the grass instead of the dirt.

In yet another remarkable innovative step forward, the TOVP engineering team has embarked on the development of a custom-made tool to be used for engraving designs into wood, metal and styrofoam for various elements of the temple; the 4 Axis CNC Router.

Being manufactured in China, this router is designed to serve the specific needs of the TOVP. It has been selected for its precise work and will be used for making mold patterns in wooden doors, windows, etc. The 3D design-based tool can not only carve patterns into wood, but it can also cut into aluminum and mill styrofoam which will be used for the ceiling, arches, screens and GRC molds.

Pictured is the Router and some examples of what it can produce. Now under production, it will be ready for shipping to Mayapur in 2-3 weeks.

Router defined:
A machine tool that mills out the surface of metal or wood
(Tools) any of various tools or machines for hollowing out, cutting grooves, etc.

THE Hare Krishnas will return to a place in Worcestershire they once called home.

From when they sold Croome Court over 30 years ago, the Hare Krishnas are returning with their annual event which celebrates their time at the National Trust mansion house and parkland during the 1980s.

The event, which will see Croome burst in to song, dance and live music, takes place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20.

Becky Wilks, events officer at Croome, said: “It’s great to have some of the devotees return to Croome as part of our Hidden Heritage programme to share their stories with our visitors over the weekend.

“There’ll be lots to see and do during this colourful weekend and a completely unique experience for everyone that joins us.”

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) bought Croome Court in 1979 when famous devotee and former Beatle, George Harrison, reputedly released funds for the purchase to use the Grade I listed mansion as their headquarters.

Traces of their residence at Croome can still be seen in some decoration around the house.

This year sees the reintroduction of the Hare Krishna connection with the Rotunda where visitors can follow the new route to this spot for an aural and visual feast.

Nathan Hartley, from ISKCON Festivals, said: “We’re looking forward to returning to Croome. The manor house and beautiful surroundings play a significant part in the history of the Hare Krishna movement here in the UK. Home to many Krishna devotees in the ’70s and ’80s, Croome Court will always be a place full of fond memories for those who lived, worked and played there. During our movement’s brief five-year stay we worked hard to establish an alternative, natural life-style on the estate. Based on ancient spiritual teachings of yoga and philosophy from the Vedic culture of India, Croome became a temple, ashram, school and farm.

“What makes this year’s Hare Krishna weekend extra special is that it falls within the year-long celebration to mark 50 years since the founding of ISKCON by Srila Prabhupada.”

The festival starts at 10am and runs until 5pm on each day. It is free to attend with usual admission prices.

The Forest Fire

This world is compared to a forest fire caused by the cohesion of bamboo bushes. Such a forest fire takes place automatically, for bamboo cohesion occurs without external cause. Similarly, in the material world the wrath of those who want to impose their supremacy over material nature interacts, and the fire of war takes place, exhausting the unwanted population. The Lord has nothing to do with Such fires or wars that take place. But because He wants to maintain the creation, He desires the mass of people to follow the right path of self-realization, which enables the living beings to enter into the kingdom of God.

The Lord wants the suffering human beings to come back home, back to Him, and cease to suffer the threefold material pangs. The whole plan of creation is made in that way, and one who does not come to his senses suffers in the material world by pangs inflicted by the illusory energy of the Lord.

Therefore, in order to douse the forest fire encompassing the sparks of greed, envy, hatred, lust, pride, jealousy and false ego, one must take shelter of the Supreme Lord.

By sincerely following His prescriptions, we exhibit our complete surrender to Him. By doing so, we can easily invoke His causeless mercy and all material sufferings become imperceptible, owing to the sublime blessings which He showers in reciprocation of our one- pointed, unalloyed devotional service.

The Spiritual Navigator

Sitting by the beach this morning, after I finished my power-chanting, marvelled by the Lord's incredible natural creations, I decided to spend some more time relishing nectarean kirtans as the beautiful, glowing sun rose slowly over me, bringing a gleaming light to the beautiful white sand and blue sea. Its glittering, golden rays  felt like Lord's soft touch on my head. The cool coast breeze and the tiny droplets of water splashing against the rocks, which brushed my face felt like God's divine shower of mercy. Suddenly a rainbow appeared in splendid display of colours, shades of red, orange and yellow shone brightly into the gentle gust of fresh air which blew around me. Astonished by this exquisite exhibition of the Lord's miraculous beauty while thanking Him for His abundant blessings and meditating on His holy name, my eyes apparently caught sight of the silhouette of a ship in the distance. That's when waves of deep realisations splashed over.

It dawned upon me that our life is like the ocean, where the waves of joy, sorrow, happiness, distress bounce up and down, which are the results of our endeavour, actions and consciousness.

We, like the helmsman, must take charge of the ship of our life. For this we need to develop spiritual consciousness and foster its gradual progress. We should be able to navigate this ship of life by adjusting to the spiritual principles. Do not let the winds of time, place and circumstance blow away the sails of love and devotion for our Supreme Father.
An ideal person knows perfectly well how to adapt spiritual principles in terms of time and place. All the great achaaryas or religious preachers or reformers of the world executed their mission by adjustment of religious principles in terms of time and place. There are different climates and situations in different parts of the world, and if one has to discharge his duties to preach the message of the Lord, he must be expert in adjusting things in terms of the time and place. Bhishmadeva was one of the twelve great authorities in preaching this cult of devotional service, and therefore he could receive and welcome all the powerful sages assembled there at his deathbed from all parts of the universe. He was certainly unable at that time to welcome and receive them physically because he was neither at his home nor in a normal healthy condition. But he was quite fit by the activities of his sound mind, and therefore he could utter sweet wise words with hearty expressions, and all of them were well received. One can perform one's duty by physical work, by mind and by words. And he knew well how to utilize them in the proper place, and therefore there was no difficulty for him to receive them, although physically unfit.

Therefore, by establishing and developing firm conviction in Lord's arrangement, maintaining and regularly practicing spiritual principles, being self-satisfied with the present conditions accepting it to be the Lord's kindness on us, we can become the perfect spiritual navigator.

Overcome the Fear of Future

Fear keeps us focused on the past and constantly worried about the future. It creates desperation and indecision that paralyzes our logic, thinking and actions. We can’t live freely because we can’t stop living in fear - fear of the unknown, fear of the future.

The control by time lays its inevitable hands all over the space within the universe, as there is control by time all over the planets. All the big gigantic planets, including the sun, are being controlled by the force of air, as the clouds are carried by the force of air. Similarly, the inevitable kala, or time, controls even the action of the air and other elements. Everything, therefore, is controlled by the supreme kala, a forceful representative of the Lord within the material world. We should not feel sorry for the inconceivable action of time. Everyone has to bear the actions and reactions of time as long as one is within the conditions of the material world. Even the most pious has to suffer the condition of material nature. However, a pious man is faithful to the Lord, for he is guided by the bona fide holy saints and Vaishnavas following the religious principles.

These three guiding principles should be the aim of life. One should not be disturbed by the tricks of eternal time. Even the great controller of the universe, Lord Brahma, is also under the control of that time; therefore, one should not grudge being thus controlled by time despite being a true follower of religious principles.
Thus, we should not allow the grief of our past or the fear of our future to ruin the happiness of our present.

By having strong faith on the sands of time and believing in His grace, comprehending that the Lord has best plans for us, we should not get bewildered by the fear of future. Thus, we can overcome the fear of future by understanding that as long as we are fully in cooperation with the wishes of the Lord, guided by the bona fide brahmanas and Vaishnavas and strictly following religious principles, one has no cause for despondency, however trying the circumstances of life.
