Mauritius formally honored the legacy of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), on Saturday, 8 August 2026, when His Excellency Mr Dharambeer Gokhool, G.C.S.K., President of the Republic of Mauritius, unveiled a Special Day Cover at Hare Krishna Land in Pont Fer, Phoenix.
The ceremony, which began at 1:30 p.m., marked two milestones: ISKCON’s 60th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s landmark visit to Mauritius in October 1975. Upon arrival, President Gokhool first went for darshan before joining the main commemorative ceremony and addressing the gathering.
The President’s personal presence gave the occasion a national dimension, elevating a devotional anniversary into a moment of shared civic significance. He was accompanied by the Honorable Ajay Gunness and the Honorable Dhaneshwar Damry, and the ceremony was further graced by Govardhan Das, Co-GBC for the region, along with Sriniketan Das, one of Srila Prabhupada’s own disciples, whose presence linked the day directly back to Prabhupada’s original visit five decades earlier. Arjuna Das, another of Prabhupada’s Mauritian disciples, was unable to attend due to a health issue. Spiritual leaders, devotees, and other distinguished guests filled out the gathering.
At the heart of the event was the launch of the Special Day Cover itself, issued by Mauritius Post Ltd to commemorate the dual anniversary and to preserve, through the island’s postal heritage, the memory of Srila Prabhupada’s enduring spiritual and cultural legacy in Mauritius. Special Day Covers are typically reserved for occasions the postal authority judges to carry lasting national or cultural weight, and their unveiling by a sitting president marks a further distinction. As a national philatelic tribute, the cover places a religious milestone permanently within the country’s civic and historical record, a recognition that extends ISKCON’s significance well beyond its own devotee community and into the country’s broader story of religious plurality.
Following the ceremony, President Gokhool visited the Temple of Unity–ISKCON Mauritius, a project currently under construction on the island. There, he spoke of the importance of preserving spiritual values and of strengthening unity and harmony across Mauritius’s diverse society. Invoking the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, “the world is one family”, the President observed that differences of culture, tradition, and belief do not diminish the shared humanity and mutual responsibility that bind Mauritians together.
