A recent theatrical production titled The Promise, performed at ISKCON Chowpatty, has brought renewed focus to the Barsana Medical Camp and Hospital Project—an initiative dedicated to providing free medical services in Vrindavan. Presented as part of the temple’s annual festival, the drama highlighted the spirit of selfless service that defines the project, portraying the sincere dedication of both the volunteers and the local Vrajavasis.
Speaking about the motivation behind the production, director Radharani Priya Devi Dasi explained, “We don’t go there to give anything. We are beggars there, begging for mercy from the Vrajavasis. That kind of a mood really inspired all of us who started going in 2014.”
The Barsana camp, which has now expanded into a functioning hospital, is run entirely free of cost and continues to serve the local population throughout the year. The drama sought to share the atmosphere of that service with a wider audience, many of whom may never have witnessed it firsthand. “We thought of doing something to make people aware of such a beautiful project,” she said.
The production took several months to complete. While the concept had been discussed over the years, the actual script writing began around four to five months prior to the performance. “It was on our minds for a couple of years,” she recalled. “But this particular script took shape in a few months. Once that began, we started gathering devotees for different roles.”
The entire recording was professionally captured in 4K quality by the devotees of ISKCON Chowpatty, ensuring that the visual presentation matched the sincerity of the effort. From stage lighting to camera work and post-production, all aspects were handled internally by the temple’s media team, many of whom offered their services voluntarily.
