Our mind is restless and fickle in nature. It is turbulent in its actions and tenacious in its selections. It is extremely difficult to control because it is strongly bound to desire for habituated sense gratification. It is also powerful and hard to withdraw once it is out in pursuit of desired sense objects. Trying to control the mind is like trying to control the wind. It is like trying to confine a violently blowing cyclone in a pot because our mind is the set of cognitive faculties that enables consciousness, perception, thinking, judgement, and memory.

In the material world the activities of the mind are acceptance and rejection. As long as the mind is in material consciousness, it must be forcibly trained to accept meditation on the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but when one is actually elevated to loving the Supreme Lord, the mind is automatically absorbed in thought of the Lord. In such a position a person in pure consciousness has no other thought than to serve the Lord.

This dovetailing of the mind with the desires of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is called nirvan?a, or making the mind one with the Supreme Lord.

The best example of nirvan?a is aptly cited in Bhagavad-gita. In the beginning the mind of Arjuna deviated from that of Lord Krishna. Krishna wanted Arjuna to fight, but Arjuna did not want to, so there was disagreement. But after hearing Bhagavad-gita from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Arjuna dovetailed his mind with the Lord’s desire. This is called oneness. This oneness, however, did not cause Arjuna and Krishna to lose their individualities. There is a misconception among some ignorant beings that oneness necessitates loss of individuality. Actually, however, we gather that individuality is not lost. When the mind is completely purified in love of Godhead, the mind becomes attuned with the mind of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The mind at that time does not act separately, nor does it act without inspiration to fulfill the desire of the Lord. The individual liberated soul has no other activity. In the conditioned state the mind is always engaged in activity impelled by the three modes of the material world, but in the transcendental stage, the material modes cannot disturb the mind of the devotee. The devotee has no other concern than to satisfy the desires of the Lord. That is the highest stage of perfection, called nirvan?a or nirvan?a-mukti. At this stage the mind becomes completely free from material desire.

Therefore, the  mind must detach itself from the infatuation of sense objects by association from those wise in Vedic knowledge who posess spiritual knowledge. In this way the mind will be elevated and gravitate towards spiritual objectives. The mind is completely freed from all material contamination and detached from material objectives. At that time the mind is actually dovetailed with that of the Supreme Lord and is experienced as one with Him because it is freed from the interactive flow of the material qualities.

To truly let go of our resentment, it is important to understand the actual phenomenon taking place. The fact is, we are not these bodies; we are the soul. These bodies are temporary vehicles. We are the source of consciousness that animates the body and witnesses what happens to it. However, when we identify as this body, any physical or verbal harm directed towards it disturbs us.

Bhagavad Gita explains that the soul can’t be burned by fire, can’t be drowned by water and can’t be disturbed by words. We are that eternal soul, and our purpose in life is to cultivate knowledge and awareness of our true identity.  It is simply an illusion, an addiction to an untruth that devastates us upon being challenged in some way. It actually has nothing to do with us. But, as conditioned souls, we are habituated to crave enjoyment through this body and mind. Because of this misidentification, anything that interferes with the mind and body’s enjoyment causes us terrible pain.

The remedy for this disturbance is detachment.

Detachment arises naturally upon realizing our true identity. The soul is transcendental to the dualities of this world. Thus when we think and act from the platform of the soul we are no longer afflicted by any material circumstance. The soul’s nature is to serve unconditionally. By acting from this platform of service to the Supreme Soul, Krishna, we identify less and less with the body and mind, thus we are less and less afflicted by the disturbances that arise thereof.

To the degree we are aspiring to serve rather than exploit, to that degree we become transcendental to the various inevitable dualities around us. One’s greatness has to be estimated by one’s ability to tolerate provoking situations. What does it mean to tolerate provoking situations? To maintain a consciousness of forgiveness and compassion. What is the most effective way to imbibe this consciousness? It’s described that in this current day and age, anyone can attain pure transcendental consciousness simply by sincerely chanting the holy names:

Would like to share a story which has deeply influenced my heart and has transformed my whole perspective on life. It is the story of Haridas Thakur, the Namacharya or the one empowered to teach the proper consciousness for chanting the holy names. The power of the holy name to free us from all disturbances of this world was showcased in the life of Haridas Thakur. Due to worshiping Krishna in a Muslim-ruled state, the king condemned Haridas to death. The king’s men dragged him by the hair through public market places beating him with clubs, pounding him. They were screaming nasty slurs at Haridas, torturing him ruthlessly. But because Haridas Thakur was deeply taking shelter of The Lord through chanting his names, he was in ecstasy. His communion with God through his name was so deep he just didn’t mind the severe inflictions on his body or the blasphemies upon his ego. As he was being beaten, he chanted with this prayer in his heart, “My dear Lord Krishna, please forgive them. Please forgive all these men who are beating me and trying to kill me, don’t consider their actions an offense. Give them your mercy. Give them your love.” That prayer of forgiveness was springing from the core of his heart through all 22 market places of severe blasphemy and beating. Haridas Thakur embodied the principle of true forgiveness. He never blamed anyone for anything that came upon himself; instead he saw them as the instruments of his own karma. And he thanked God in every situation for having the opportunity to turn to Him.

The true essence of forgiveness is to be an instrument of God’s forgiveness. Due to realizing his true identity, Haridas Thakur embodied this essence and was able to forgive even the most heinous acts. When forgiveness comes through the knowledge of the soul and the power of God then that forgiveness has the potency to truly change our hearts and those of others.

We can master the art of forgiveness when we religiously practice and learn to maintain the consciousness of compassion, to pray as a well-wisher of everyone and to view every situation as an opportunity to sincerely take shelter of the mercy of the Lord through remembering him and chanting his holy names. To achieve inner peace we must change ourselves. And simply by sincerely chanting the holy names, we transcend all of the negative forces in this world and attain the supreme everlasting peace of Krishna consciousness.

Dear devotees,
Please accept our humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Another well-known title, On the Way to Krishna, by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is now in ebook form and available at bbtmedia.com in all flavors.

On the Way to Krsna is based on lectures Srila Prabhupada gave, mostly on the 7th chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, in New York in the fall of 1966. These were still his early days in the United States, and he addresses a quintessential part of what we think of as the American dream: the right to pursue happiness. Of course, the desire for happiness is not an American phenomenon but intrinsic to the human condition.

Without knowing what real happiness is, Srila Prabhupada says, happiness is impossible to achieve. In this small book, Srila Prabhupada discusses how happiness is found beyond the temporary, and illumines Lord Krishna's definition of happiness as it is presented in the pages of the Bhagavad-gita.

An excellent small book for preaching.

Inspection of Sandstone Work in Jaipur

Muted tones of sandstone will be used at the foot of the temple as a symbol of strength, shouldering the weight of the temple. The subtle beauty of the Sandstone will wrap the base of the temple all around, inspiring a contemplative mood in the pilgrims as they view the beautiful carvings along the parikrama. The intricate jali will serve as lungs breathing air for the ground floor.

Currently, work is ongoing at a manufacturing unit in Jaipur, aiming to begin installation on site by August. Buddharam Stone Industries in Jaipur, Rajasthan is one of the foremost carvers available in India, following traditional methodologies, and very meticulous work practices. Vilasini devi dasi (Head Architect) and Anupama Shah (Team Lead – Architects) visited their factory to review the work in progress on Sunday, 14 June 2015 and were very much satisfied with their remarkable work.

Arabic Perfection of Yoga Stuns Syrian Actor

By Shastra-krit das

Friday evening 7 pm, Santa Monica Promenade

Harinam was going on full-swing and I was approaching people with books who were standing near the chanting.

I approached this friendly-looking man in his late 30’s. I put the Gita in his hand and told him that I’m showing books on mediation to all the nice people on the Promenade this evening.

He was polite and calm and with a smile asked if the book I’m trying to give him is in my language (he could tell I’m from Indian background, so he probably meant Hindi). I said no, originally it was written in Sanskrit but now it’s been translated by this great master, word for word into English. I showed him the photo of Srila Prabhupada from the back cover.

After I explained a bit about the Gita, i could tell he was very attracted. He told me he loves Gandhi, Indian food, culture, Bollywood etc. Many Arabic-speakers who have taken Arabic books from me have said the same thing about loving Indian culture.

Then he says “Oh well if this book is in your language or English it’s the same to me” (meaning he can’t understand either). I asked him what he means because his English is very good, and he said “just so-so”.

Paramatma then gave me intelligence that he speaks Arabic. I always carry a Gita and a few small Arabic books in my hand, but I had just finished distributing the last Arabic book that I was holding to another nice gentleman from Saudi Arabia. So I asked him “Can you read Arabic”? he replied with a smile “Of course i can that’s my language”.

So i reached into my book box and pulled out a Perfection of Yoga in Arabic and handed it to him. His eyes went wide and he was in a total shock that I had a book on ancient yoga teachings of India in his own beloved Arabic.

What i have observed is that these Middle Eastern people are very attached to their birth language, and they respect it and are very proud of it. They text in Arabic on their smartphones, and have their phone key pads in Arabic. So they are really amazed and actually deeply grateful to see that we have translated our books into their own Arabic for them. I mean no one ever gives them anything in Arabic! So they can’t believe it, and I wind up selling up to a few dozen of the Arabic books each and every day. It’s so easy and fun to do that I think I am getting kind of addicted to this very special gift of bliss.

Everyone should be tasting this!

So it was with excitement and enthusiasm that he read the title of the cover, “Kamala Yoga” (Perfection of Yoga), opened the book and read a paragraph really fast out loud, read the back of the book and then asked how much do you want for the book. So i thought I will just give him this Arabic Perfection of Yoga since he said he can’t read English, but by now he insisted on keeping the Gita as well. He pulled out a wad of money and gave me a $20, and just then I noticed someone was standing close by with a video camera recording us.

So we thanked each other profusely and he started walking away. As he was leaving, so many Middle Eastern men and women were taking photos of him and talking selfies with him. So I thought to myself what’s going on here? So i approached him again, and he acknowledged me and came towards me from the midst of all these fans.

I asked him “Are you famous”? He says “Yes I’m an actor and director from Syria and my name is Kosai Khauli, please pray for me.” I later discovered that he is one of the most highly-acclaimed and loved actors in the Middle Eastern world.

I humbly requested, “Can I please take a photo of you holding the books that you just got from me?”

He replied, “Oh now you want me to pose with your books? Well now that it’s commercial you’ll have to pay me, at least give my money back” and then he broke out laughing and then we both had a hearty laugh. We took a photo together of him holding the historical Srila Prabhupada’s book in Arabic.

Through the hard work and strong desire of Satyanarayana Prabhu and the BBT Far East/Middle East, we now have these beautiful Prabhupada books in Arabic. They can be seen at www.bbtfeme.com , and for the reasons I described above they are actually really fun and easy to distribute. But although this is true, as Vaisesika Prabhu says we first have to have the books and only then we will be able to distribute them. So I think everyone should taste this bliss and stock up on these special books asap! And I beg all the vaishnavas to pray that Kosai reads them fully and helps us to distribute them amongst the other Arabic-speaking celebrities. The fans will surely follow in their footsteps as did some of Kosai’s fans that blissful evening on the Promenade!

With so many other services and responsibilities they have taken up in their local temple, they have come forward to serve this International project and the world headquarters of ISKCON. Why Should we Chant

The process of chanting the holy names of God is a fundamental practice in all streams of faith. The Christians have their rosaries, the muslims chant their daily namaz and those who follow sanatana dharma chant specific mantras for God realization. Even according to a recent study at Stanford, they concluded how by chanting mantras our mind becomes calm and peaceful due to the continuous repetition of God's holy names.

There are many Vedic references which specifically recommend the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra as the most effective and advantageous means of reaching spiritual realization and counteracting all the problems of this age. Some of these verses are the following:

These sixteen words--Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare--are especially meant for counteracting the ill effects of the present age of quarrel and anxiety. (Kali-santarana Upanishad)

All mantras and all processes for self-realization are compressed into the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. (Narada-pancaratra)

Chant the holy names, chant the holy names, chant the holy names. In this age of Kali [the age of quarrel and confusion] without a doubt there is no other way, there is no other way, there is no other way. (Brihad-naradiya Purana 38.126)

In this age there is no use in meditation, sacrifice and temple worship. Simply by chanting the holy name of Krishna--Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare--one can achieve perfect self-realization. (Vishnu Purana 6.2.17)

The self-realization which was achieved in the Satya millennium by meditation, in the Treta millennium by the performance of different sacrifices, and in the Dvapara millennium by worship of Lord Krishna [as the Deity in the temple], can be achieved in the age of Kali simply by chanting the holy names, Hare Krishna. (Bhag.12.3.52) (Verses similar to this are also found in the Padma Purana, Uttara-khanda 72.25, and the Brihan-naradiya Purana 38.97)

Living beings who are entangled in the complicated meshes of birth and death can be freed immediately by even unconsciously chanting the holy name of Krishna, which is feared by fear personified. (Bhagavatam.1.1.14)

Where To Find Love

At the supermarket, I bumped into a school friend after eons. My happiness knew no bounds when our eyes met and nostalgia overtook us, as we reminisced the good old childhood days. I invited her home for dinner. However, when she shared her unnerving experience on ‘love’ it left my flustered. She recounted, “I met him online. When we finally met in person a few months later, I fell in love with him. We dated for nine months. He was my first love. I thought things were going quite well, when he announced, out of the blue, that he was moving back to his hometown. I was sad, but I didn’t think we needed to break up because the town was only two hours away. When I said so, he confessed that he was moving home to get back with his ex. Then I found their wedding announcement online. The wedding date had already passed. He’d been married a month before he broke up with me! After narrating this, she started sobbing bitterly.

After a while, when she finally gained composure, she asked me, “Please tell me, where should we look for love?”

Love is the subject of countless books, songs, films, plays, sonnets, articles, conversations, and advertisements; it is meditated on, longed for, and bemoaned; it is a source of anguish, ecstasy, and a varied range of emotions in between. Yet despite our ability today to acquire many things, love—or loving relationships with our friends, spouses, children, parents—often elude us.

Why? Let us explore the nature of true love—the warm, deep, personal, and profoundly tender feeling of affection one person has for another. Why, even though we crave it, does it bewitchingly escape us?

The soul by nature, constitutionally and eternally, is meant to love. Hence, each and every soul is finding avenues to express love, to channel this propensity to love someone, somewhere and somehow.

What kind of songs do most people listen to? What kind of novels do most people read? What kind of cinemas do most people watch? What is the subject of most television series? It’s all about 'love'. People are trying to find some means to find inner satisfaction through expressing this insatiable energy to love.

Lord Krishna explains in Bhagavad Gita that of all types of yogis, of all processes of yoga, the highest is to love. The Srimad Bhagavatam explains that there may be many who achieve impersonal liberation, and there may be millions who attain mystic siddhis, but none can find real peace. Only one who has awakened the propensity to love God within the heart can achieve real peace. So as we come closer to awakening that love, we’re actually making real progress in our life.

So, instead of looking for love from external sources around us in this material world such as expecting love from family, friends, relatives, pets, strangers... We must look for love where we are bound to get it, where there is no heartbreak, no sadness, no despair, no loneliness but the most precious form of love - Divine love from the Supreme Lord - pure love which is neither contaminated nor adulterated with some hidden motives or unspoken expectations in return.

Guru - An Eternal Servant of God

Just as it is a fraud for a so-called guru to offer only gross material benefits, or to collect money from his disciples for selfish aims, or to teach the disciples that they are God or can become God—so it is an even greater fraud for the so-called guru to proclaim that he himself is an incarnation of God.

The Vedic scriptures predict the incarnations of God and describe their extraordinary qualities and activities. So any ordinary person who poses as a guru and says he is an incarnation of God exposes himself as the greatest fool in human society.

The truth is that everyone, including the spiritual master, is an eternal servant of God.

5 Tips on chanting Hare Krishna Maha Mantra without offense

http://iskcontimes.com/sites/default/files/srila-prabhupada-02-06-2015.jpg" class="CToWUd a6T" tabindex="0" />

Here are some tips given by Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaj and Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur on how to chant the holy names of God without offense.

1) Nectar of Devotion – Chapter 13
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has recommended that everyone chant the Hare Krishna mantra just to cleanse the dust from the heart. If the dust of the heart is cleansed away, then one can actually understand the importance of the holy name. For persons who are not inclined to clean the dust from their heart and want to keep things as they are, it is not possible to derive the transcendental result of chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. One should, therefore, be encouraged to develop his service attitude toward the Lord, because this will help him to chant without any offense. And so, under the guidance of a spiritual master, the disciple is trained simultaneously to render service and at the same time to chant the Hare Krishna mantra. As soon as one develops his spontaneous service attitude, he can immediately understand the transcendental nature of the holy names of the maha-mantra.

2) A Second Chance (book on reincarnation) - chapter on Atonement
Sridhara Svami says, “Chanting the holy name of Narayana, Lord Hari, not only counteracted all of Ajamila’s sinful reactions, but it made him eligible to become liberated, and therefore at the time of death he was transferred to the spiritual world.” Chanting the holy name of Krishna counteracts all sins - more than one can possibly commit. Because Ajamila had chanted the holy name without offense, and because he chanted sincerely, he completely freed himself from all sinful reactions. This is why we are stressing the chanting of Hare Krishna so much. Pious activities, austerity, sacrifice - everything is done simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. There is no need of any other process of yogaatonement, or austerity and penance. Simply by chanting without offense one achieves the results of all other ritualistic performances prescribed in the Vedas. The key to successful chanting, therefore, is to carefully avoid sin altogether. By chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, a person is freed from all reactions to his previous sins, and if he avoids sinning again, he very quickly becomes an advanced devotee. His mind becomes fixed upon the lotus feet of Krishna. If we regularly chant Hare Krishna without offense, we shall remain free from all sinful reaction, and our attachment for the Supreme Lord in devotional service will increase.

3) Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaj, on pg. 27 of the book called Siksastaka, says: There is indeed a way to escape the steely clutches of namaparadha. One must recognize and isolate the offences conscientiously avoiding them, he must then chant continuously.

4) Wear the “trnad api sunicena” mantra around one’s neck. Which means always be aware of these four things while chanting and serving in this world (be very humble,  more tolerant than a tree, devoid of false prestige, and offer proper respect to all).

5) Chant the Siksastaka daily because this will develop one's love for Krishna.
If anyone recites or hears these eight verses of instruction (Siksastaka) by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (daily), his ecstatic love and devotion for Krishnaincreases day by day. (CC. Antya 20.65)
