The Amazing Pastimes of Lord Nrsimhadev

3355679336?profile=original

By H.G. Andharupa dasi

My name is Andharupa dasi initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1975 at Miami Florida. I was asked to tell my story of my cure from Hepatitis C.

The summer of 2004 His Holiness Jayapataka Maharaja visited New Ramana reti temple in Alachua Florida. I approached Maharaja and asked him for his blessings for my departure from this world. My illness: Hepatitis C of 3rd stage fibrosis of the liver. I was undergoing medical treatment for a duration of 48 weeks with only 45% chance to be cured with many side affects.

3355679458?profile=original

Jayapataka Maharaja said to me “You see this staff? It was touched to Lord Nrsimhadev in Mayapur.” Then he touched it to my head. That night I had a dream my body was diseased with leprosy and started to fade away. The next morning I had a phone call from the University of Florida. The doctors told me “Congratulations. You are Hepatitis C free. The viral count is non reactive in just 8 weeks!” The doctors were amazed especially for I had genotype 1, the deadly type of Hepatitis C.

When I started this treatment I prayed to Lord Nrsimhadev every day, “Whatever your desire, You may take me from this world or you may cure me. Whatever you see fit. However, please allow me to always be engaged in your pure devotional service.” Thank you Lord for giving me a second chance.

Thank you for your time.

Gratefully yours, Andharupa dasi

Miraculous Pastimes of Nrsimhadev in Mayapur

3355678260?profile=original

Dr. Bashudev Das is a Bangladesh Government doctor. His 20 year old daughter Mistee Das who is a medical student, became very sick in March 2006. She was diagnosed with a life-threatening germ cell tumor in the ovary. They brought her to Mumbai, where treatment started. But soon the doctors gave up on her. Dr. Das went to visit the ISKCON Temple in Juhu, where one devotee gave him a leaflet about the upcoming Nrsimha Caturdasi festival in Mayapur, which he attended. There he received a small book of pastimes of Lord Nrsimhadev in Mayapur.

He read in the book some of the miraculous cures that Lord Nrsimhadev had performed, and was convinced that by Lord Nrsimhadev’s mercy his daughter would be cured. He went back to Bangladesh and contacted Lord Nrsimhadev’s pujari in Mayapur. He requested him to offer a special offering to Lord Nrsimhadev to save his daughter’s life. Immediately Mistee’s health started to improve. Now gradually she is returning back to her normal state.

Basudev Das became so inspired by Lord Nrsimhadev’s mercy that he printed the book of His pastimes and distributed it in Bangladesh. He says, “I feel every person should pray to Lord Nrsimhadev for personal and spiritual development.”

By His Holiness Bhakti Purusottama Swami

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s movement is based on congregational preaching. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that people should gather in groups of five or ten and clap hands and chant Hare Krishna. This is the basic principle of congregational preaching; this is the basic principle of Mahaprabhu’s movement.

Congregational preaching programs make it easy for people to follow the process of Krishna consciousness. It doesn’t mean people may compromise the principles of Krishna consciousness. Actually, many of our congregational devotees practice the principles much more seriously than the devotees in the temple.

Temple presidents should not take congregational preaching to be separate from the temple program. I do not believe that our society can develop nicely by just providing some facility to brahmacaris, Sunday programs and life membership. Temple presidents should see how effective congregational preaching is and acknowledge it as one of their main preaching programs.

In Bengal, twelve years ago, it was so difficult for us to hold Nama-hatta festivals, but because we have developed congregational preaching, we are loved by everyone all over Bengal and India. Congregational preaching has many things to contribute to our society. Everybody should work starting with the temple presidents and GBCs. So many different processes can be introduced to reach the people in the congregation.

The Lord Always Protects His Devotees

Speaker: H.H Badrinarayan Swami

Radhanath Swami Maharaja told me a very blissful story the other day and he said I could use it. So here goes! There was that Taj Hotel where the terrorists attacked. They were fighting in there for three days, complete carnage. The terrorists had arranged in such a way that they would always be up higher. They would shoot from a lower vantage point down. Radhanath Maharaja told me this. They had all these grenades and they would throw the grenades and the grenades would create so much smoke that if you were down looking up you couldn’t see anything.

Picture that you are one of these soldiers or police officers and you are in this cloud of smoke and up above you there is this hail of bullets from the terrorists shooting at you. One of those soldiers was one of our devotees. At one point, they were trying to chase these people through the hotel. They are trapped. The terrorist were throwing all these grenades, they are in a complete cloud of smoke. They cannot see one foot in front of their face. They can’t see left, right or anything and this hail of bullets is being fired at them. Just a wall of bullets coming at them.

This devotee police officer, with two other police officers on either side, he is in the middle, he actually was completely helpless. He couldn’t see left, right, he couldn’t see his colleagues. He remembered that he had on his ring tone on his phone Nrsimhadeva prayers. He began playing the Nrsimhadeva prayers and praying intently to Lord Nrsimhadeva, “Please I am absolutely helpless. I am going to die. Save me, in an absolutely hopeless state.”

When the shooting stopped, the smoke cleared, his friend to the right and his friend to the left were completely killed, riddled with bullets, and he was unscathed. In front of him, which he couldn’t see at the time, was a giant pillar. And because they were shooting at him the pillar protected him.

He thought, “Just as Lord Nrsimhadev came out of the pillar to save Prahlada He put a pillar here to save me!” So my point is, simple point, is if we have that faith, “Oh, how will I be taken care of?” Krsna will take care of you, don’t worry. Let me give my life to the sankirtana movement.”

Every devotee should be engaged in spreading Krishna consciousness. There is no limit to how many people can become involved and we need to get everyone involved. Everyone should see that they have a very important part to play in developing Krishna conscious communities.

People in many parts of the world are not so favorable to organized religion due to previous negative experiences. When congregational development is at the forefront of the preaching, however, people can be taught how to practice in their home, a pressure-free environment. After that, it is up to the individual to determine how much he or she wants to be involved in organized temple programs. The home can be made into a suitable place for practicing Krishna consciousness. The point is that everyone should practice Krishna consciousness.

Krishna consciousness is a very open process - at any place and in any circumstance, everyone should chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and read Srila Prabhupada’s books. As one becomes more and more Krishna conscious, the temple festivals and preaching activities become naturally more attractive. Sometimes people are allergic to Krishna consciousness because they think that joining the movement means becoming a monk or living a monastic life. Of course we have that option for people who want to live as monks, but we also have the option for people to practice Krishna consciousness from their homes.

Srila Prabhupada said you do not have to shave your head or join the temple. Krishna consciousness is very relevant to everyone. Congregational outreach programs bring new opportunities and new challenges. These programs save people from illusion and contamination from the material world. Krishna consciousness gets rid of the binding illusion of the material world and liberates us from material identification. We need to give people this contact with Krishna consciousness, and this is where congregational development becomes essential. Congregational development reaches out to people in various ways and gives a range of options for a variety of prospective devotees.

Congregational Preaching

By Bhakti Charu Swami

The Early Days

During the early days of the Hare Krsna movement, spiritual life was perceived as meaning to live in the temple as a full-time devotee. The word “devotee” referred to someone who was living in a temple and engaged in temple activities full time. Those who lived outside were referred to as “karmis”. That early phase of ISKCON was probably unavoidable. Srila Prabhupada had just started the movement in the West where practically no one had any idea about Krsna Consciousness or devotional service. Therefore, such commitment and involvement was essential.

With the passing of time, the outlook changed – the attitude of the movement broadened and those who were unable to become fully involved for various reasons were also included. This movement is meant to spread all over the world, therefore just a handful of devotees living in the temple could not possibly be the extent of the worldwide movement. As a matter of fact, over time, it became obvious that the vast majority of the devotees would be living outside the temple and that we would have to structure our organization accordingly in order to grow in an appropriate way.

This development took place naturally as many brahmacharis changed to grihastha ashram. At first families lived within the temple, but as families and children grew, more and more grihasthas had to move out to make arrangements according to their needs. Gradually other people living outside in their households also started to join and their number increased.

Today

Today, the devotees living outside of the temple far outnumber the full-time devotees within the temple. Because of this development, the Krsna consciousness movement has grown with a tremendous speed. Today in ISKCON we see that many householders, though living outside the temple, are maintaining strict spiritual standards, chanting 16 rounds every day, following the four regulative principles, and taking initiation. In this way, they are strengthening the foundation of our movement. They may not be able to participate in temple activities on a daily basis, but they come to the temple on the weekends and render various services regularly.

It is not easy to maintain a household nowadays. To earn the money to maintain one’s family practically compels grihasthas to work for 40 to 60 hours per week. Unless and until one earns a certain amount, he is not going to be able to maintain his family and oftentimes both husband and wife have to work in order to make ends meet. It is admirable that in spite of such busy lives, grihasthas are still chanting 16 rounds, maintaining a nice standard of worship at home, reading Srila Prabhupada’s books and training their children to become Krsna conscious. Through their exemplary commitments, they are, in one sense, the pioneers that are paving the way for the ideal Krsna conscious householder community in our society.

Looking Ahead

The beginning stage of any development naturally faces various difficulties, because proper arrangements are not there to facilitate the participants. Srila Prabhupada had wanted committed householders to lead a life of simple living and high thinking through the development of farm communities. However, due to the complex economic structure of the world today, it is very difficult to become fully self-sufficient in a farm community. Many families tried to move to the country with good intentions of maintaining themselves through cow protection and farming, but most were not able to maintain such a life and eventually had to leave to find a better financial situation. Through the trials and errors of those pioneers, our movement is learning and has real hope for realizing Srila Prabhupada’s vision. Hopefully we will come to the perfect situation where householders can live life within our community without having to depend on outside sources of income. Many spiritual organisations have succeeded in that endeavor, most notably the Mormons. However, it is important to remember that it took the Mormons hundreds of years to come to the situation they are in today. So eventually with time, ISKCON will also have an ideal situation for householders where children will be educated within our own educational systems and later find employment within our institutions, thus being securely situated both spiritually and materially.

Congregational Preaching

In the meantime, before we can have a perfect situation for householders, it is the duty of the monastic order to give them full encouragement. Even though grihasthas may not be engaged in daily services in the temple, they are very deserving of our respect as a very valuable part of our community. We have to utilize their talents and abilities for the propagation of Krsna consciousness. They should be motivated and trained to become active preachers and spiritual leaders. In this respect, we can closely follow the lives of various exalted householder devotees of the past. Of course, during Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s time, the social situation was not as complex as it has become today. In India at that time, life was very simple, food and other necessities were in abundance and the attitude of the people was also very generous. That is the advantage of living close to nature. However, today’s world has drifted far away from that lifestyle and as a result household life has become so complex. Therefore we must recognize that in spite of such pressure and responsibility, the individuals who are maintaining their Krsna consciousness in their household situation are indeed great devotees and deserve our heartfelt appreciation. For their sake, our movement has to sincerely consider how to create appropriate situations to properly utilize their valuable time.

One of the best ways to motivate householders is by genuinely recognizing their contribution to ISKCON. It is our duty as ISKCON leaders to guide those who are earnestly involved in accepting and propagating Krsna consciousness and engage them according to their talents and the needs of the movement. Let us give congregational preaching the importance that it deserves. Let us recognize that this is the most powerful tool for the propagation of Krsna consciousness all over the world and let us not hesitate to give it all the support it needs to become a very solid foundation for our movement.

The 70th Vyasapuja of HH Jayapataka Swami was celebrated in a very grand and loving way by his disciples and well-wishers at ISKCON Mayapur. Over 14000 disciples congregated at Mayapur to glorify their beloved spiritual master. Sri Mayapur and Jayapataka Swami are synonymous. Maharaja once said I know only three things- Mayapur, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and Congregational preaching. His love for Mayapur dhama is no surprise as it is confirmed by Srila Prabhupada that “He is an associate of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu”. He has been commissioned to appear again to revive the fallen conditioned souls, back home back to Godhead.

A Vyasa-puja pandal was erected at the parking area, with beautiful designs. On the stage, HDG Srila Prabhupada and Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakura were worshipped in two swan-vyasasanas. The Adivas ceremony took place the day before, preparing everyone’s consciousness to observe Vyasa-puja.

On the day of Vyasapuja, 70 lamps with victory flags were lighted in Sri Narasimhadeva, Sri Radha-Madhava, and Sri Panca-tattva altar. Pujas were continuously offered to Their Lordships for Maharaja’s good health and spiritual welfare. Maharaja also raised a victory flag in the ToVP office.

The program continued with glorifications by his godbrothers, different sanyasis from the Gaudiya Matha, sanyasi disciples, and senior leaders. On this occasion, several devotees were honored for their outstanding and dedicated service to Jayapataka Maharaja. Then, the lotus feet bathing ceremony and artik took place. After this, Maharaja gave his Vyasapuja address to all the participants.

The Vyasa-puja videos are available in Jayapataka Swami Facebook page.

The Networking Tree of Lord Caitanya

The Networking Tree of Lord Caitanya

Countless people come to ISKCON Mayapur from all over India and the world, and ISKCON Mayapur has a number of preaching endeavors to attract these people to Mayapur and to preach the science of Krsna consciousness to them. ISKCON Mayapur’s preaching targets all people, both those from far away lands and those who reside within and near Mahaprabhu’s own land.

One of these preaching programs is the Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha program. Bhakti Vriksha preaching is a method derived from Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s Sri Godruma Kalpatavi, and whose name comes from the Caitanya-caritamrta’s description of the tree of devotional service, or bhakti-vriksha. Mayapur’s Bhakti Vriksha is an initiative which preaches the teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu specifically to the local people in and around Nadia.

Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha began on a very small scale as a local preaching program in Navadvipa. Devotees would simply drive to a nearby locality in Navadvipa and have lectures, kirtan, and prasadam distribution. Since then, it has expanded into a full-scale Bhakti Vriksha program and now conducts a wide variety of preaching programs in Navadvipa and in the surrounding area, in places such as Krsnanagar, Shantipur, Dhubulia, Shyampur, Barasat, Suvarna Vihar, Dankuni, Srirampur, Dharmada, Badkulla and Bardhaman.

The Bhakti Vriksha Department attracts people in a variety of ways. Often, the devotees do Nagar Sankirtan and arrange special programs known as Jivan-jignasa in which they have kirtan, present a slideshow, have a Questions and Answers session, and serve prasadam. Sometimes, they arrange special stage programs in different places. The devotees rent an auditorium and many devotees from ISKCON Mayapur come to participate in the program. They perform dances, musical presentations, and dramas, and senior devotees speak. There is also kirtan and prasadam distribution. During the month of Kartik, the Bhakti Vriksha Department conducts Damodara Programs, in which attendees hear about Damodara lila and offer lamps. In 2018, the Damodara Programs were so successful that the Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha Department engaged over 100,000 people in offering lamps to the Lord. All of these programs are very effective for attracting the local people to become a part of Mayapur’s Bhakti Vriksha.

Those who are members of the Bhakti Vriksha program are enlivened in their Krsna consciousness in many ways. Each group meets weekly, and monthly they have larger get-togethers. The Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha Department organizes many different events for Bhakti Vriksha members to participate in, including Gita seminars, house programs, spiritual picnics, visits to Mayapur, book distribution, prasadam distribution, kirtan utsavs, and more. Participants are engaged in service in Sri Dham Mayapur on festivals such as Rama Navami, Sri Krsna Janmastami, and Nrisimha Caturdasi. They engage in vaishnava seva during Navadvipa Mandala Parikrama, serving refreshments to the devotees on parikrama as they pass through the Bhakti Vriksha members’ respective areas. Mayapur’s Bhakti Vriksha team also arranges for Bhakti Vriksha participants to visit holy places such as Kanai Natashala, Ekachakra, Ramakeli, Katwa, and others. In the year 2018 alone, the Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha Department organized almost two hundred events for members to participate in.

Another unique way Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha encourages its members and attracts new Bhakti Vriksha members is by holding picnics on the different islands of Navadvipa Dham. Attendees are fed sumptuous prasadam, engage in kirtan, listen to classes, and participate in fun Krsna conscious games and contests. Attendees are requested to bring a friend along who is not already a Bhakti Vriksha member, so in addition to enlivening current Bhakti Vriksha members, these picnic programs also serve to attract new members.

Mayapur’s Bhakti Vriksha Department desires to engage local people of all varieties in the practice of Krsna consciousness. In some of the areas in and around Navadvipa Dham, the local population is not very literate; therefore, the devotees arrange special programs catered specifically for these localities. They have special groups for members from these areas, known as Radha Madhava Bhakta Samaja groups, which have regular programs that facilitate members’ spiritual development despite their limited ability to read Srila Prabhupada’s books.

A key aspect of any Bhakti Vriksha program is its networking system, because once one Bhakti Vriksha group is established, its members are encouraged to start new Bhakti Vriksha groups, and thus the Bhakti Vriksha program expands exponentially. Although there are only ten devotees serving fulltime within Mayapur’s Bhakti Vriksha Department, there are now forty Bhakti Vriksha groups and eight Radha Madhava Bhakta Samaja groups.

The vision of Sri Dham Mayapur’s Bhakti Vriksha Department is that each and every person in their preaching zone is introduced to the teachings of Lord Caitanya as presented by Srila Prabhupada in his books. To this end, they aim to have 108 Bhakti Vriksha groups and 108 Sri Sri Radha Madhava Bhakta Samaja groups in the greater Mayapur area (measuring around twenty miles in radius surrounding ISKCON Mayapur). Sri Dham Mayapur is the headquarters of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His preaching movement, and so Mayapur’s Bhakti Vriksha program envisions that from this central hub, the Bhakti Vriksha network will continue to spread outward throughout all regions. In this way, people from many different areas will be connected to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His glorious and most merciful Dham.

Reflections on Rama-navami

By H.H. Giriraj Swami

Sri Hanuman, a great devotee in the form of a monkey, prays, “Since Lord Sri Ramacandra is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vasudeva, He is not attached to anything in this material world. He is the most beloved Supersoul of all self-realized souls, and He is their very intimate friend. He is full of all opulences. . . .

“One cannot establish a friendship with the Supreme Lord Ramacandra on the basis of material qualities such as one’s birth in an aristocratic family, one’s personal beauty, one’s eloquence, one’s sharp intelligence or one’s superior race or nation. None of these qualifications is actually a prerequisite for friendship with Lord Sri Ramacandra. Otherwise how is it possible that although we uncivilized inhabitants of the forest have not taken noble births, although we have no physical beauty and although we cannot speak like gentlemen, Lord Ramacandra has nevertheless accepted us as friends?

“Therefore, whether one is a demigod or a demon, a man or a creature other than man, such as a beast or bird, everyone should worship Lord Ramacandra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who appears on this earth just like a human being. There is no need of great austerities or penances to worship the Lord, for He accepts even a small service offered by His devotee. Thus He is satisfied, and as soon as He is satisfied, the devotee is successful. Indeed, Lord Sri Ramacandra brought all the devotees of Ayodhya back home, back to Godhead [Vaikuntha].” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.19.6–8)

In his purport, Srila Prabhupada explains, “Lord Sri Ramacandra is so kind and merciful to His devotees that He is very easily satisfied by a little service rendered by anyone, human or not. This is the special advantage of worshiping Lord Ramacandra, and there is the same advantage in worshiping Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Lord Krsna and Lord Ramacandra, in the manner of ksatriyas, sometimes showed Their mercy by killing asuras, but Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu awarded love of God without difficulty even to the asuras. All the incarnations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead—but especially Lord Ramacandra, Lord Krsna and, later, Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu—delivered many of the living entities present before Them, indeed almost all of them.”

And what of those who were not present before Them, not present before Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu? The answer is revealed in Sri Caitanya-caritamrta (Antya 2.13–14):

“To deliver people in regions throughout the universe who could not meet Him, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu personally entered the bodies of pure devotees. Thus He empowered living beings [His pure devotees] by manifesting in them so much of His own devotion that people in all other countries became devotees by seeing them.”

Srila Prabhupada elaborates in his purport, “As stated in the Caitanya-caritamrta (Antya 7.11):

kali-kalera dharma—krsna-nama-sankirtana

krsna-sakti vina nahe tara pravartana

Unless one is empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, one cannot spread the holy names of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra throughout the world. Persons who do so are empowered. Therefore they are sometimes called avesa-avataras, or empowered incarnations, for they are endowed with the power of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.”

It is only by the causeless mercy of Lord Ramacandra, Lord Krsna, and especially Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu—and His empowered representative Srila Prabhupada—that creatures like us could be delivered and engaged in devotional service (bhakti-yoga), in relishing and distributing their divine, sublime mercy.

Everyone has this opportunity

By His Holiness Prahladananda Swami

The aim of our Krsna consciousness movement is to convince people that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is a person who is complete in all opulences, and when you offer service to Him with love and enthusiasm, you can attain the highest perfection of life. This is to become conscious of Him. Everyone has this opportunity, especially the humans. In this age, just by hearing about Krsna, we can understand our relationship with Him, and become free from the misidentification with the material body and mind. All this requires is that we hear from a bona fide source and chant.

Congregational development gives people the opportunity to come together, and hear and chant about Krsna. Gradually, they understand their relationship with Krsna. By practically performing their day-to-day activities, in that relationship, they will receive Krsna’s mercy. They will know that they are the eternal servants of Krsna.

People associate according to their understanding of what the goal of life is. Unfortunately, the mass of people think that the goal of life is economic development for the purpose of sense gratification. They need association with people who know how material nature works, so they can regulate their activities of economic development and sense gratification. This will help their progression towards liberation. People may not be engaged in Krsna’s service directly, in terms of preaching, but if they have the Opportunity to associate, they will encourage each other. They will make progress in the grihastha ashram, and greatly affect their family structure and maintenance. This will encourage them to make progress in devotional service by making Krsna the center of their lives. Although deity worship is essential, in this age, it is more essential to hear and chant about Krsna. Everyone will be inspired to serve Krsna, in the home or the temple.

In Chapter 13 of the Bhagavad-gita, Prabhupada defined detachment in a purport. In the morning and evening, the family should hear Srimad-Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita, chant Hare Krsna, perform deity worship and offer food to them. In the material world, there is no absolute happiness and freedom from distress. If the family is centered on Krsna, the family will most likely stay together.

We must care for one another

By His Holiness Kadamba Kanana Swami

The material world is the world where you have a facade. The material world is the place where you have a hidden agenda. The material world is the place where you want something from someone without really telling them. In the material world, you can never have a totally selfless relationship. But we have a philosophy that offers a path for developing selfless relationships. So if we have that, then it should be possible amongst us to have real, genuine relationships based on mutually giving to each other.

Serving the vaisnavas means that one must give to the vaisnavas. One must give the vaisnavas facility, one must give the vaisnavas space to do what they need to, one must appreciate the vaisnavas and so on.

Sometimes, in friendship one must also walk up to someone and say, “What are you doing?” That helps sometimes even when a stranger does that!

I had a period in my life when I did not do well. Just then, a stranger came out of nowhere, and said, “What are you doing with your life?” I was so shocked because he was a stranger! And I said, “But you do not even know me!” He ignored that and he said, “What are you doing with your life!?”

That really woke me up. It shocked me that a stranger said such a thing to me. Then I made a big change. It had an impact. So yes, we must care for one another.

Krsna Consciousness is a free market economy

By His Holiness Jayapataka Swami

In America, some companies offer rebate coupons. This means that after a person has purchased the particular product, he is mailed a check, of say twenty percent of what he had paid, or is sent some other offer. But whatever price one pays in the market of the holy name, he receives a rebate of many, many times that amount.

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura is describing the supreme bargain. In this material world we give our love and faith to people, but they can hardly reciprocate a fraction of what is given. Sometimes our loved ones might even cause us harm. Here Bhaktivinoda Thakura explains that if we give our faith to Krsna, then not only will we be reimbursed the equivalent, but we will actually get back many times that amount. So why should we hesitate?

It is not required to live as a monk in a temple. Everyone receives a benefit according to the faith and devotion he gives, whether big or small. Whatever devotion one has, he invests and gets profit. Thus one’s capital accrues. Then he reinvests the enhanced capital. In this way one will very soon be spiritually rich.

To reside within a temple, one should be on the level of bhajana-kriya or anartha nivrtti. But those devotees living at home can be on any level, higher or lower. And even if one has only a small degree of faith, that still has value and can be invested. Therefore the preachers should encourage people to bestow their faith in Krsna.

When Bhaktivinoda Thankura was preaching, there were no temples as exist today. The members of the Nama Hatta were all grihasthas living at home, but they could still attain love of God. And so it stands at present.

Krsna consciousness is a free-market economy. The actual currency is love and faith. Everyone can invest in Krsna and achieve the highest perfection of life: krishna–prema.

Congregational Preaching

Congregational Preaching

By His Holiness Kadamba Kanana Swami

Congregational preaching means Krsna consciousness for the grihastha ashram. Because many people who are involved in family life cannot directly live in the temples, we need a program to offer Krsna consciousness to those people. Since householders are the majority of the population, congregational preaching is one of the first priorities of our movement. We should develop different ways to engage people in chanting the holy name, in reading Srila Prabhupada’s books and rendering service to the deities.

Congregation naturally indicates that people must come together in groups, that naturally they come together to chant the holy names and come together to the temples to serve the deities. In this way we can change the world. It must be one of our main strategies to develop more and more groups to facilitate these activities.

One of the areas where I do a lot of preaching is in South Africa. It is a country where there are a lot of congregation members. There is really no difference between a devotee who stays in the temple and one who stays outside the temple. They are running Nama-hattas and are doing so many wonderful things.

Durban they have their famous Ratha-yatra. Every year 200,000 to 250,000 plates of Prasada go out. It is all going on by the efforts of the congregation. The ladies chop vegetables and the men cook all night in big pots. It doesn’t have to be that the temple devotees are on a higher level of Krsna consciousness and the congregation is on a lower level. Of course, the temples do offer a lot of special opportunities for Krsna consciousness training. We have to take responsibility and offer training, education and good spiritual standards to the congregation.
