It's Time to Get Serious

It's time to get serious about spiritual life. Your material situation can end at any moment. What have you done to prepare yourself for your next life? Have you surrendered to Krishna? Have you taken shelter of a bona fide spiritual master? Your material qualifications will not save you at the time of death. Your only real asset at the time of leaving your body is how much you have genuinely developed your love for Krishna. So it's time now for you to fully focus your consciousness on attaining

Radhanath Swami quotes a story, “A young rich man asked Jesus what he needed to do in order to inherit eternal life. Jesus replied that he should keep the commandments, to which the man stated he had done. Jesus responded, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” The young man became sad and was unwilling to do this. Jesus then spoke “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdo

(Excerpt from the New Year's Eve lecture by HG Vaisesika Prabhu @ ISKCON of Silicon Valley, San Jose, California - USA)

It takes a nudge

Go over if you can all the things that you did last year, how your practice was, where you went, who you talked to, what books you read, make an honest assessment of how you did last year and write those things down and then think about what you want to do next year, what goals do you want to

Honesty Vs Hypocrisy

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

We all have so many desires. In purport to verse 4.8.34 His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada very nicely says, "Desire must exist, either material or spiritual. Material desire arises when one wants to satisfy one's personal senses. One who is ready to sacrifice anything to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead can be said to have spiritual desire". So His Divine Grace cla

Power of Speech

"The Supreme Truth is understood to be the life air sustaining everyone's life air, the vision of everyone's eyes, the hearing power of the ear, and the sustenance of food itself." The obvious conclusion is that the Supreme Truth can be known by His own causeless mercy, and not by our foolish attempts to bring the all-pervading truth within the insignificant boundaries of our intelligence. It is stated in the Taittiriya Upanisad (2.4.1), yato vaco nivartante aprapya manasa saha: "The descriptive

There is nothing more important than knowing how to act properly. Without the guidance of enlightened spiritual authorities we are stuck with following the dictates of our senses and the dictates of others who are also catering to the dictates of their senses. When the blind lead the blind, where do they end up? In the ditch. This is why the following Vedic injunction has been given great emphasis:

mahajano yena gatah sa panthah

"One must follow the pathway of the great enlightened spiritual maste

Recognizing an opportunity

Recognizing an opportunity

When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book; and so a poor man, who could read a little, bought it for a few coppers. The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum on which was written the secret of the "Touchstone"!

The touchstone was a small pebble that could turn any common metal into pure gold. The writing explained

See Good Be Good

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Once a lady in a house saw her new neighbour hang the clothes for drying through her window. She thought for herself that her neighbour is very dirty and is not washing the clothes properly, as the hung clothes had stain and dirt even after washing. She observed the same for months together, and thus nick named her new neighbor as 'The Unclean lady'. Then suddenly one fine da

"The Blessed Lord said: One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who works as he is obligated is in the renounced order of life, and he is the true mystic: not he who lights no fire and performs no work." (Bhagavad-gita 6.1)

In this world we see that everyone is acting with some personal interest, some self-interest. Practically everyone is working, even in the spiritual field, with the idea of getting some personal benefit from his activities. Everyone works to maintain his family and

One young devotee, Johnny, who had played one of the bass drums enthusiastically on the Ratha parade received the name Ramai. A young girl received the name Gunavati. "This is a very nice name," said Srila Prabhupada. "It means one who possesses all good qualities."

Penny, who had been diligently distributing books now for many months, received the name Subhalaksmi. "As long as you are collecting laksmi [money], you are auspicious," said Srila Prabhupada with a broad smile.

Instructions

Sunday, 30 June 1974

Srila Prabhupada was scheduled to perform an initiation ceremony for six young devotees early in the morning. He entered the temple room a little before 7am. A devotee rang a large brass ship's bell suspended from the ceiling, and the folding white doors opened, revealing the Deity room filled with clouds of fragrant frankincense. Prabhupada offered full prostrated obeisances, then stood, glancing lovingly at the Deities.

In the front of the altar, decorated with l

You were dancing nicely today

Prabhupada's evening massage was not as thorough as the pre-noon one. He wanted his legs massaged, squeezed up and down from the hips to the feet, then the feet and toes. At these times, Prabhupada usually spoke little, although sometimes he was prone to sweet reflections. This night was no exception. In the quietness of Prabhupada's room, the busy Ratha-yatra festival over, Prabhupada lay on his bed as Satsvarupa gently pressed Prabhupada's legs and feet. The lights

Third Annual Ratha Yatra

The carts proceeded into Exhibition Street on the final leg of the parade. The sun, now visible through the sombre cloud covering, made the metallic braid on the backs of the fibreglass horses glisten. Occasionally, bursts of gold and silver glitter thrown from the carts also caught the warming rays of the sun.

Arca Murti: Towards the end of the parade, Srila Prabhupada started dancing. His movements were not gymnastic, but they were graceful and calm. He would start from

Trevor Stephens: Prabhupada wore a mustard-coloured knitted cap that was pulled back a little on his head, with a peach-coloured turtleneck jersey, a nice pale shiny saffron kurta and dhoti, dhoti top and matching bead bag, with a white woollen chaddar over his right shoulder. Occasionally he would play karatals in time to the kirtana. Around his neck he wore a multi-coloured garland of various flowers: hyacinths, gardenias, marigolds, daffodils, cornflowers and orchids.

Third Annual Ratha Yatra

Melbourne's third annual Ratha-yatra parade was the grandest yet; and since Lord Jagannatha's intimate and confidential servant, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was to be personally present, it was also the most auspicious.

After an offering of delicious vegetarian food and an arati ceremony to the Deities on Their chariots held at Carlton Gardens, the three massive chariots rolled down Collins Street. Srila Prabhupada's car pulled up near the City Squ

A fair go

The devotees' excitement grew as the time for the Ratha-yatra parade drew near. It was the culmination of months of careful organisation and hard labour. It was also a Ratha-yatra that almost didn't happen. Compared with the near-catastrophe of fire a few days earlier, far more serious obstacles had been raised by the Melbourne City Council. Despite an application being lodged for the parade months in advance, permission had been denied only one week before the event. Melbourne official

Appreciation

As the morning walk progressed deeper into the gardens, Madhudvisa Swami took the opportunity to introduce Hari-sauri, the chief engineer of the Ratha cart construction, and all his assistants. Prabhupada stopped and smiled.

"Jagannatha will be very much pleased upon you. Yes. Svalpam apy asya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat. A little service to God is taken as a great service. Krsna is so kind. So we should always try to give the best service, the best energy, and become liberated. A
