An hour’s drive from Bloemfontein, in South Africa’s rural Free State, Brhat Mrdanga Das and his family are working to build Living Sanctuary, a farming and cow-protection project they hope will grow into a residential Krishna-conscious community.
As of early August 2026, the family’s herd numbers four cows and a calf, three of which are being milked; ghee production is being scaled up for the first time; and the household reports it has come close to feeding itself from roughly two hectares of its 45-hectare property. The project has no fixed public program or admission process yet, but it has reached a stage its founders describe as a turning point after several years of preparation.
