55 years ago, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), traveled to Moscow, USSR. He spent five days in Russia, from where the Hare Krishna movement spread to other countries of the former USSR.
On August 17th, a festive event was held at the Hotel National in Moscow to commemorate Prabhupada’s arrival. Srila Prabhupada stayed here during his visit to the capital of the USSR from June 20 to 25, 1971. During this trip, he met with the well-known Russian Indologist Professor Grigory Kotovsky, as well as his first Russian disciple, Anatoly Pinyaev, who was later initiated into the Gaudiya-Vaishnava tradition with the spiritual name Ananta-Shanti Dasa.
As part of the celebrations, His Excellency the Ambassador of India, Shri Vinay Kumar, unveiled a memorial portrait of Srila Prabhupada in the Gallery of Distinguished Guests at the National Hotel.
in their speeches, honored guests emphasized the spiritual, cultural, social, and scientific significance of Srila Prabhupada’s historic visit to the USSR. Attendees included diplomats, government officials, renowned scholars in Indian and religious studies, representatives from various religious organizations, famous Russian artists, and ISKCON leadership in Russia.
The event was organized with the support of the Embassy of India in Russia.
