Bg eCourse

Hare Krsna Maharajas and Prabhus,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Here is a wonderful opportunity for you or some of your disciples and/or followers:

2 Month Bhagavad-gita eCourse by BhaktiLife.org

Two of Srila Prabhupada's initiated disciples, Dhruva Maharaja dasa and Samapriya dasi -- who have been following his teachings for more than 40 years -- are conducting a new and revised Bhagavad-gita As It Is eCourse from April 2 - June 3, 2012. This eCourse is not simply an academic study of the text, but will also help participants develop strong daily spiritual practices. Participants study from their own computers, on their own time schedules, but network with others in the eCourse and teachers via the internet.

To begin Bhagavad-gita Lord Krsna's friend Arjuna refused to fight in the Battle of Kuruksetra. However, after hearing Lord Krsna's instructions Arjuna was transformed and agreed to fight according to the Lord's divine plan. Similarly, the instructions of Bhagavad-gita are meant to renew us -- to elevate us to the transcendental platform. There is no other book on earth which can benefit mankind like these instructions personally spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Indeed, the title Bhagavad-gita means "The Song of God."

Participants must have their own computer and internet connection, and expect to spend between 5-10 hours per week on course materials. This eCourse covering the entire 18 Chapters is offered only once per year, and enrollment is limited to the first 30 participants who Register. For more information, copy and paste this address into your internet browser:

Talking decreases ones Life

Prajalpa means talking all nonsense. Suppose politics."What Mr. Nixon did yesterday, or what did he say?" So what interest we have got in Mr. Nixon? We shall not waste our time talking this politics, that politics, this sociology, this cinema, this affair, no. We have nothing to do with that. That is called prajalpa, unnecessary talking.Talking means decreasing your duration of life. Talking. So why should you decrease your life unnecessarily? Every moment you have to utilize, "Whether it is used for Krsna?" This is sadhana. This is sadhana, practice. Unnecessary talking, unnecessary making enemies. Unnecessarily, "You are my subordinate; I am your master." Who is master? Everyone is subordinate to Krsna. Nobody is master. Why you talk unnecessarily?

The Catherine Incident

Hare Krsna Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Some devotees wrote to me asking what happened with the lady who sent the letter complaining about her experience with a book distributor. I found out who had distributed books to her, and it turns out he's a very nice devotee whom I've known for many years. As with all of us, there is room for improvement in his service. He wrote a letter to her apologizing for what she found to be unacceptable for a person promoting a religious way of life.

I also spoke to the sankirtan advisor for the UK, Visvambhara Dasa, who said that in his seminars he would emphasize that devotees should be straightforward in their exchanges with the people they meet.

Nice Words

I once stopped an old lady on the street in the center of Zagreb, Croatia, and offered her "A Second Chance." She immediately said, "I'm eighty-five years old, too old for that stuff," and then prepared to leave.

With a smile I pointed at her body and said, "Madam, this body of yours is eighty-five years old, but you are a soul, eternally young." The old lady smiled sweetly at this and went away, and I continued with sankirtan. But she soon returned and, with a smile on her face, said, "Nice words open every door." She then reached into her purse and pulled out a donation for "A Second Chance."

Jay Sankirtan!

Hare Krishna and the Hit Parade.

Dear Prabhu

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I am engaged in writing a dissertation to conclude my MA in Study of Indian Religions which seeks to reflect upon and analyse the development, from 1969 to the present day, of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in the United Kingdom, ISKCON UK, popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement. This analysis will be conducted with specific reference to several ISKCON inspired ‘hit’ records, which registered significantly in the UK’s commercial popular music charts during this period. These are, in chronological order, ‘Hare Krishna Mantra’ by the Radha Krishna Temple (London) 1969, ‘My Sweet Lord’ by George Harrison 1971, ‘Bow Down Mister’ by Boy George 1991 and ‘Govindam by Kula Shaker 1996. My thesis aspires to engage these chart successes as catalysts to provide periodic windows into an analysis of ISKCON’s development.

I hope that the substance of my research will consist of an analysis of candid responses from devotees regarding their personal experiences and insights on these subjects and to this end I have drawn up the tentative round of questions on the page below. I will be very grateful if you will consider assisting me in one of the following ways:

1) Allow me to record a personal interview with you, I can visit/meet you to do this or I could call you on the phone, skype or ‘chat’ with you on the internet according to your preference and convenience.

2) Send me a written response to some or all of the questions or with any observations of your own which you think will be pertinent to my quest.

3) Let me know of or put me in touch with any devotees you think would make a valuable contribution to this research project.

4) Share with me any archived media sources you know of that might be useful to my understanding or presentation of my subjects.

I will be grateful for any contribution you kindly choose to make and I will fully respect any request on your part for this to remain anonymous should you so desire. My e.mail addresses are bhakti.rasa@yahoo.com and bhakti.rasa.sdg@pamho.net my mobile number is 07958494847 and my Skype id is bhaktirascal. My research deadline is the end of March so I’ll be happy to hear from you in some capacity anytime before then.

(Although this research is specific to the UK I am also keen to receive input from devotees who have pertinent experiences in other locations as ISKCON is after all an interconnected International organisation)

Questionnaire

Could you describe when, how and where you first encountered Krishna consciousness and what kind of (service) relationship you have had with ISKCON (UK) over the years? In 1969, ‘Hare Krishna Mantra’ was released as a single on the Beatle’s Apple Records label by Radha Krishna Temple (London), produced by George Harrison it reached number 12 in the UK hit parade. What information or insights can you share about the events or factors leading to this record release and what significances, in your experience or opinion, did it

hold for the development of ISKCON (UK) during that early period?

Two years later in 1971 George Harrison released the album ‘All Things Must Pass’ and from it the single ‘My Sweet Lord’ featuring the chanting of the Maha Mantra topped the UK charts for five weeks and enjoyed similar international successes. How did/do you feel about ‘My Sweet Lord,’ Can you share any recollections of its reception within ISKCON (UK) In contrast to the earlier ‘Hare Krishna Mantra,’ ‘My Sweet Lord’ did not feature ISKCON devotees, but was George’s own performance and production, the musical arrangement was modern and western, it was even successfully sued for plagiarising the Chiffons’ ‘He’s So Fine’ and the English lyrical content was an expression of devotional feeling with chanting moved to the chorus. In your opinion what are the significances of these distinctions and are you aware of any ways that they reflected upon or influenced ISKCON’s development in the Although ‘My Sweet Lord’ contained the Maha Mantra, George also introduced another Hindu mantra and the Christian chant Hallelujah; what do you think about these inter-faith initiatives, and what in your perspective do they reveal about ISKCON’s negotiation of its

arrival into predominantly secular/Christian host cultures like the UK?

Many artists have recorded versions of ‘My Sweet Lord,’ including Boy George in 1992. Boy George’s cover followed his 1991 release ‘Bow down Mister’ which had reached number 27 in the UK charts. What are your feelings about ‘Bow down Mister’ how do you recall its being received by ISKCON (UK) at the time and by the public at large and how does this compare

with the reception given to George Harrisons ‘My Sweet Lord’?

The immediate context of ‘Bow down Mister’ is Indian and Hindu, is this in your experience or opinion suggestive of significant developments in ISKCON (UK) surrounding this period ‘Bow down Mister’ was released under the group name ‘Jesus Loves You’ rather than Boy George’s solo name and the song features a black gospel choir harmonising a typical Christian spiritualist chorus line interspersed with the Maha Mantra what is your perception of this inter-faith theme and does it correlate with any parallels in ISKCON (UK) at the time? Boy George came to fame by challenging rigid gender roles as a cross dressing artist.

Please comment upon whether you feel ISKCON (UK) has been well balanced in its treatment of female and male devotees in ascribing their respective roles and rights? Are there to your knowledge any features of, or elements associated with Gaudiya

Vaishnavism which may resonate with people interested in cross dressing?

Boy George is a self confessed bi-sexual and has been an active equal rights campaigner for Gay people, in this connection some of the lyrical content of ‘Bow down Mister’ might be read as double entendre. Do you think ISKCON UK has been or is conscious of this and how comfortably do you think it compares with ISKCON’s perspectives on Gay people and policies towards them? Do you think the general public has also perceived a double

entendre and how do you think this reflects upon ISKCON?

Kula Shakers ‘Govindam’ mirrored 1969’s ‘Hare Krishna Mantra,’ by lyrically consisting entirely of repeated Sanskrit mantras, the musical platform, however was western hard rock fused with an eastern flavour provided by tabla drums and female backing vocals. Would you agree (or not) that this retrospection of tradition, yet radicalising it musically is suggestive of and coincidental with the emergence of ISKCON’s second generation and if so

what does this signify for ISKCON (UK)?

Although the range of mantras used in ‘Govindam’ clearly have a home in ISKCON, ISKCON’s hallmark the Hare Krishna Mantra itself is conspicuous by its absence. Do you

have any insights regarding this omission?

What can you say about the events and factors leading to ‘Govindam’s’ release and what are your impressions of how it was received by ISKCON (UK) and by the UK public at the Govindam was the second of two hit singles to come from Kula Shaker’s debut album ‘K’, the first being the enigmatically entitled ‘Tattva’; they reached number 7 and 4 in the UK charts respectively. Kula Shaker dedicated the album ‘K’ to Prabhupada, and released it in 1996 the year commemorating Prabhupada’s centennial celebrations. Kula Shaker’s lead singer Crispian later accepted Gaudiya initiation vows but not from a disciple of Prabhupada; what might this indicate, in your view, about developments relating to gurus in the ISKCON ‘My Sweet Lord’ was re-released in 2002 after George’s departure and became again the UK’s number 1 record for a week, in this sense it has become his signature tune; what bearing, in your estimation has George’s identifying with the chanting of Hare Krishna in this

way had on the destiny of ISKCON (UK)?

Do you see ISKCON (UK) playing a continued role in pop culture and do you have any conception of what forms that might take?

Microwave - some facts to take note of

Microwave test

It has been known for some years that the problem with microwaved anything is not the radiation people used to worry about, it's how it corrupts the DNA in the food so the body can not recognize it. Microwaves don't work different ways on different substances. Whatever you put into the microwave suffers the same destructive process. Microwaves agitate the molecules to move faster and faster. This movement causes friction which denatures the original make-up of the substance. It results in destroyed vitamins, minerals, proteins and generates the new stuff called radiolytic compounds, things that are not found in nature. So the body wraps it in fat cells to protect itself from the dead food or it eliminates it fast. Think of all the Mothers heating up milk in these 'Safe' appliances. What about the nurse in Canada that warmed up blood for a transfusion patient and accidentally killed him when the blood went in dead. But the makers say it's safe. But proof is in the pictures of living plants dying!!!

RELEASE PRIORITY: CLASS I ROO1a

Ten Reasons to dispose off your Microwave Oven From the conclusions of the Swiss, Russian and German scientific clinical studies, we can no longer ignore the microwave oven sitting in our kitchens. Based on this research, one can conclude this article with the following:

1) Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term permanent - brain damage by 'shorting out' electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].

2) The human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in.

3) Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.

4) The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.

5) Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.

6) The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.

7) Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumours]. This may explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in UK and America .

8) The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.

9) Continual ingestion of microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.

10) Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence.

"Salted Bread"

Sri Sri Guru Gaurangau Jayatah

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Recently, I read a book "Salted Bread", which speaks about difficulties and struggles of Krishna's devotees in the early days of our movement in the former Soviet Union. "Salted Bread" is a great source of inspiration for all book distributors who are daily meeting different challenges. It is especially effective for preaching to our rascal, ever complaining mind, because we can understand that our difficulties are nothing in comparison to what these great souls went through. They were all 22, 23 years old boys who sacrificed their lives for spreading Krishna consciousness by book distribution. Thanks to them, there are so many temples all over Russia.
It seems that many devotees have not read the book yet. Many senior devotees have recommended this great book. Below there are three sections which especially touched our hearts.

Your servant,
Vasudeva Datta dasa

Sarvabhavana Prabhu at the Police station, p. 122

At that point, three large, muscular men started to kick me as if I was a ball. My nose was bleeding until I could not feel it any more. Then they asked me to stand up, which I did. One of them took hold of my ear and took me close to the metal door and asked me to place my fingers between the door hinges. I refused to do so. He then asked help from the other man, who placed my eight fingers there and started to close the door slowly while screaming into my ear, "Where are the books hidden, who is printing them, and where?" I do not remember what exactly happened after that, but after I came back to consciousness, I noticed that all my fingers were cracked and bleeding.

While I was lying down there one of them took electric heater and brought it close to my face and screamed at me, "So now we will cook you, man! Let's see who is who, we will eat you up okay?!" My face and nose were burning. I closed my eyes so they would not be burned. Then another man came and asked the first man to take the heater away. I was screaming and trying to tolerate the pain. Two men took hold of my arms and took me to the bathroom and asked me to wash myself quickly. I looked myself in the mirror and closed my eyes immediately. I was all bloody and swollen and bruised. I had seen a face resembling that in the movies, but not in real life, especially not my own!

Sacisuta Prabhu's glorious departure in the prison cell, p. 240 (Told by one non-devotee co-prisoner)

"One morning, he was feeling better and asked me for a favour. He asked me if I could shave his head and leave a little bit of hair on the top at the back. I asked him why he wanted that, but he did not explain anything. 'Just do what I say, please,' he replied." The man then described how he had shaved Sacisuta's head, and then Sacisuta managed to take a shower somehow in the narrow toilet, and then cover himself with a clean bed sheet tied as a dhoti. He made a nice garland by stringing some coloured papers torn from magazines and used toothpaste to make tilak marks on his body. After that, he sat in a lotus yoga position and chanted Hare Krishna as usual on his bread beads, while looking at the Panca Tattva and Harikesa Swami's small picture in his left hand.

"He was happier than usual, and I was very happy to see him in that mood, thinking that he was recovering and feeling better. I was very sick as well at that time," the man continued, so a guard took me out of the cell to give me my daily injections. It took hardly twenty minutes. When I came back, I saw that Sacisuta was still in the same place in the same way, and it looked as if he was chanting. I lay down on my bed and read newspaper. After a while, I noticed that Sacisuta was not chanting, but simply sitting and smiling. I asked him why he was not chanting but smiling, but he did not reply. I asked him that again and again, and I asked him different questions. But he was silent. I stood up and came close to him then. I pushed him gently and asked, "Why are you smiling, my friend, and not talking?"

"Then I understood that he was not there, or that the soul was no longer there, as he would have said. I screamed and banged on the door. With tears in my eyes, I told the guards that they killed this innocent boy! They came and took his body after some time, and I never saw him again. I do not know who Sacisuta was and who you people are! I do not believe in God, but I would like to die just like your friend died right in front of my eyes! He is a hero to me, and all my life I will remember him, all my life! He was an extraordinary and pure person."

First visit of Russian devotees to India p. 253

Soon our bus took off towards the Radha Govinda Temple in Kolkata, which was the first real temple we had ever seen. At the temple, there was another super ecstatic kirtana and reception waiting for us, and thousands of flowers fell from the balcony on all the devotees. We slowly came up the stairs and entered the temple. The entire scene mad a great impression on all of us. This was the first time we ever had an opportunity to see such beautiful Deities and altar. The moonlike faces of Radha and Govinda were smiling at all of us as if to say, "Finally you are home. There is no KGB here, so please chant and dance as much as you like."

I can never forget the taste of my first charanamrita and maha-prasadam from Radha-Govinda. Lord Jagannatha's big beautiful smiling eyes were looking at us, as if He were about to jump from the altar to take part in the heavenly kirtana. After a while one devotee pulled my hand and dragged me to the Lord Jagannath Deities to show me the tears that were dripping from the Lord's eyes, shining like diamonds and slowly coming down His cheek.

Finally, Kirtiraj Prabhu came into the temple room, and with a microphone, asked all the devotees to stop kirtana and come to the balcony for lunch prasadam. Krishna Kumar Prabhu, who was Kirtiraj's right-hand man, was translating everything into Russian for all of us. But the kirtana was going on in such a powerful way, like it would never end, that no one could stop it. It took them many announcements to stop the kirtana and start to serve prasadam.

Lord Caitanya's instructions

"It would certainly be a very laborious task to pick the fruits and distribute them alone, and still I suspect that some would receive them and others would not."

"Therefore I order every man within this universe to accept this Krsna consciousness movement and distribute it everywhere to everyone."

"I am the only gardener. If I do not distribute these fruits, what shall I do with them? How many fruits can I alone eat?"

"By the transendental desire of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, water has been sprinkled all over the tree, and thus there are innumerable fruits of love of Godhead."

"Distribute this Krsna consciousness movement all over the world. Let people eat these fruits and ultimately become free from old age and death."

"If the friuts are distributed all over the world, My reputation as a pious man will be known everywhere, and thus all people will glorify My name with great pleasure."

For 36 years, Abdul Rashid, a 58-year-old Muslim, has been making clothes adorned by the deities at the ISKCON temple; he is now designing pink outfits embellished with silver zari for the idols for Rang Panchami

In India, religion dominates people's lives to a great extent that at times, it dictates people's professions too. However, there are a few times when devotion is not constrained by religion. Abdul Rashid is such an example. The 58-year-old designer is the man behind the beautiful clothes and decorations of the idols of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha at the ISKCON temple in Juhu.

Perfect fit: Abdul Rashid, a resident of Jogeshwari, has been designing clothes for deities at ISKCON temple in Juhu for the last 36 years. Rashid has also given up eating meat ever since he started working at the temple. Pic/Vijay Bate

The decoration of the idols at the temple is the result of the creativity of Rashid, who is a devout Muslim. Speaking of the adornments, Rashid told MiD DAY that he has changed the designs on the idols for Holi. "Lord Krishna, Radhaji and all the other idols at the temple will be dressed in a pink outfit for this year's Rang Panchami. The outfits for all the deities are made up of pure silk and have silver zari work with gems embedded in them."

Rashid began designing the clothes for the deities at the ISKCON temple after he moved from Balia, Uttar Pradesh back in 1966. "Initially, when I moved here, I took up various jobs such as painting, plumbing. Finally, in 1976, I joined a stitching class and that's when I realised I had found my passion in life," he said.

He found a break in life when a few volunteers from the ISKCON temple visited his class and happened to look over his designs. Impressed with his designs, the volunteers asked him to work at the temple for the next 15 days, stitching garments for the deities.

He says that his 15 days at the temple changed his life completely. "During my initial days, I met Swami Prabhupada, who told me to stay back at the temple and continue to design clothes for the deities. He said that this was my life's calling and ever since then I have never looked back."

Beautiful designs
Rashid now heads a team of 20 members, and is the main dress designer for the deities. Rashid's colourful and magnificent designs not only grace the deities in India but also in the ISKCON temples in America, UK and Australia. His designs have also been showered with praise from devotees all over the world. Mukund Madhav Das, in-charge of the Bhisma department said, "Rashid's designs are appreciated by all the visitors at the temple. The evidence of his exemplary work is that he has continued as the main dress designer at the temple for so many years now." When asked about the adulation heaped on him, a modest Rashid simply said, "I am glad that devotees at the temple love my work."

Communal harmony
Rashid believes that his religion is of no significance to his work. In fact, Rashid is the perfect example of communal harmony. He said, "God, the source of energy in this world, is one. It only has different manifestations -- be it Allah or Bhagwan. I have never given any thought that I am a Muslim designing for Hindu deities. The temple authorities have treated me as their own." He added, "Ever since, I began working at ISKCON, which is 36 years ago, I have been a vegetarian."

Gaur Purnima 2012 at ISKCON Baroda

Gaur Purnima 2012 celebrations at ISKCON Baroda
By Basu Ghosh Das

The 526 annual observance of the appearance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was celebrated by thousands of pious members of the public at ISKCON Baroda on Thursday, March 8, 2012.

In the morning, Murlimohan Das, temple president of ISKCON Vijayawada, lectured on the life of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Jaya Gaurasundar Prabhu, formerely temple president of ISKCON Baltimore and ISKCON Phoenix, both in the USA, also participated in the function and both he and Murlimohan Prabhu performed the “sadhya arati”.

Later on, at 6:00 PM, panchamrita abhishek [bathing of the Lord with the “five nectars”] of Sriman Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu and Shaligram shila was performed in the temple room. Hundreds of devotees watched the abhishek.

Thereafter “chappan bhog” [fifty six items - actually there were more] were offered to Their Lordships and then the sandnya [sunset] arati was performed.

By this time, huge crowds had gathered to wintess the arati. Simultaneously, prasad distribution to thousands began, in front of the temple.

Baroda Municipal Commissioner, Sri Ashvini Kumar, IAS, was personally serving prasad to the crowds! He remarked to me: “you are doing a wonderful service to the society”! He was very happy to have come for “darshan” [a vision of the Deities of Their Lordships] and see the huge crowds gathered for the festival.

Several other dignitaries: local political leaders of both BJP and Congress party, police officials and prominent business figures, visited the temple for darshan and prasad.

During arati, and long afterwards, Harinam Sankirtan was performed in the temple by both temple and congregational devotees.

IYF [ISKCON Youth Forum] devotees showed educational slide shows on a large screen erected on the lawn in front of the temple.

Nityananda Ram Das, ISKCON Baroda Vice President, along with Bhakta Dhirubhai Patel, Lalit Govinda Das arranged for the prasad distribution. Full meals consisting of puri, mixed subji (vegetables), chole (spiced chick peas), kadi (spiced yoghurt sauce), “phul wadi” (spiced chick pea flower with molasses, fried in oil), cracked wheat sweet (“lapsi” in Gujarati) and rice were served to all!

Jayadvaita Swami comes to Botswana

One of the world’s most reknowned philosophy and spiritual gurus, Jayadvaita Swami, arrives in Botswana today (Tuesday) for a four day visit.

Jayadvaita Swami—editor, publisher, and teacher—is a disciple of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

While in Botswana, he will speak on topics like: Can One Who Has Sinned Be a Saint? Dying in the Material World; Hinduism: God and gods, “The Ways to God Are Numberless”; Do We Live More Than Once, and many more.

He served as an editor and assistant editor for nearly all the books of Srila Prabhupada published during Srila Prabhupada’s lifetime. He received initiation from Srila Prabhupada in 1968, at the age of nineteen.

Practically the first task assigned to him was to staple booklets. He later went on to typing manuscripts, transcribing Srila Prabhupada’s dictation for books, and then typesetting, proofreading, managing book production, and editing.

He has lectured extensively at colleges and universities, especially in the United States. In 1978 he accepted the order of renounced life, sannyasa.

In 1985 and 1986, he spent a year and a half traveling with a party of pilgrims on pada-yatra, a journey on foot, through various states of India, stopping in a different town or village every night.

In 1987, along with Dhanurdhara Swami and Bhurijana Dasa, he co-founded the Vrindaban Institute for Higher Education.

Since 1988 he has served as a director of Srila Prabhupada’s publishing house, the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. He now oversees the work of the BBT in Africa.

From 1991 through most of 1998 he served as editor in chief of Back to Godhead magazine, for which he had been an assistant editor for several years.

Recently he served as editor of a three-volume translation and commentary for Sri Brhad-bhagavatamrta, a sixteenth-century Sanskrit philosophical and devotional work by Srila Sanatana Gosvami, and Sri Krishna Lila Stava, by the same author.

From Sri Mayapur Candrodaya Mandir!
Date: March 8th, 2012, Sri Gaura Purnima
Verse: Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 1.4
Speaker: HH Sivarama Swami

anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam harih purata-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandipitah sada hrdaya-kandare sphuratu vah saci-nandanah

TRANSLATION: May the Supreme Lord who is known as the son of Srimati Saci-devi be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has appeared in the Age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation has ever offered before: the most sublime and radiant mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love. Adi 1.4

(om ajnana, etc.)

HH Sivarama Swami: Caitanya-caritamrta is based on 14 seed verses which glorify Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Lord Nityananda, Advaita Acarya and the spiritual masters. This is the fourth verse and it constitutes Rupa Goswami's blessings upon Vaisnavas. Later on, Kaviraja Goswami points out that this is the mangalacarana, or auspicious invocation. In a mangalacarana, you have three things, you establish the object of worship, then you offer obeisances, and offer blessings.

This is a blessing describing Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He says, "May the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is known as the son of Srimati Saci-devi be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart."

Interestingly enough this is not written by Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami, but this is a verse written by Rupa Goswami. So he is not giving his blessing, he is giving Rupa Goswami's blessing. When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was in Jagannath Puri, at that time Rupa Goswami had come there and was residing there with Haridas Thakur. Lord Caitanya had brought his associates, particularly Ramananda Raya who was a great poet and dramatist. He wanted his associates to test Rupa Goswami's compositions.

Srila Prabhupada also points out he wanted to see their reaction, how they would react to hearing the beauty of Rupa Goswami's writings, which in a transcendental sense would eclipse their own. Would they be in some way envious? Of course they weren't. They all glorified Rupa Goswami's writings.

So there are these two dramas, most famous dramas of Rupa Goswami, the Lalita Madhava and the Vidagdha Madhava. Ramananda Raya began by asking what the nandi-sloka of this drama is. Nandi-sloka is the invocation, similar to these verses, to invoke blessings and good fortune on the hearers. And after that, what is your worshipable Deity, describe the glorification of your worshipable Deity, and then this is the verse that is found in that Vidagdha Madhava.

It is interesting they don't cite reference. Kaviraja Goswami's fourth verse is taken from another text but he doesn't footnote it. Nowadays, you can't get away with that, you have to reference it. It was known amongst the Vaisnavas who these verses were from. At that time the readership in one sense were more educated. Practically most of the verses quoted by the acaryas in their books or commentaries--sometimes Jiva Goswami in the Sandarbhas makes an exception--but generally they just quote the text. They say padme, in the Padma Purana, or in the Skanda Purana, but they don't give the verse number, they don't give the canto, you should know where it was from as a reader. Nowadays we have to be very particular, not only we have to give the verse number but you have to give the edition because who knows if it's bona fide. Things have changed.

Here Kaviraja Goswami is introducing, he is giving Rupa Goswami's blessing. Because amongst all of the Gaudiya Acaryas, Rupa Goswami is our Prabhupada who is giving us

sri-caitanya-mano-'bhistam sthapitam yena bhu-tale

He is establishing the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Part of that of mission is that all of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's followers, as His Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaja had pointed out, not only do they take Caitanya Mahaprabhu mission of spreading Krsna consciousness to everyone, and themselves being examples of Krsna consciousness, but they also take Lord Caitanya within their heart.

Srila Prabhupada spoke on this verse here in Mayapur, some time in the end of March, I think in '75, and he said that unless you accept Lord Caitanya within your heart, you cannot understand Krsna, you cannot understand Krsna's pastimes. Krsna is very difficult,

manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye

Without Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy, more or less Krsna becomes impossible to understand.

And we see that in India, we see it even among other sampradayas, what to speak of in the West. Scholars dedicate their lives to studying and reading about Krsna and yet they don't understand. They do the same about Caitanya Mahaprabhu, they approach him in a very scholastic way and are not willing to surrender to him in any way whatsoever, it is extremely difficult for them to really surrender at least while they are alive.

I remember in Hungary, when I first went there it was still a communist regime so we would go incognito. Then in 1989 the Berlin wall came down and everything opened up we could travel in devotee clothes and go around and preach as a devotee.

One of the first university programmes I did, I got into an argument with the Indologist. There are not many Indologists in Hungary. She was a lady, and it was a long argument because I was there for three days and every day we would meet and talk. She would take me to her class and I would speak and she would try to correct me and then I would say "No, no, that is not what I meant."

And then we would talk in private and it went like that for fourteen years or so. But we were very nice. She actually supervised giving PhDs to quite a few of our devotees, but she would never openly admit to being too favourable.

Unfortunately she left her body relatively young from Alzheimer's. When she left her body, her husband, who was an Egyptologist, he came and said my wife's will was to give you her library. It was 2500 books. She had books she had received from Basham, she was one of Basham's disciples. That at least was an admission. The university, ELT, which is the prime university of Hungary, she was a professor there and at several other universities, they came and were extremely upset, they were obviously expecting to get the books. But they gave the books to our Bhaktivedanta Theological College. So at least she appreciated, but she waited until. . . she didn't want to be humiliated in front of the academics so she waited until she left her body and willed it. But generally they won't understand.

Kaviraja Goswami also says,

kathancana smrte yasmin duskaram sukaram bhavet (Adi 14.1)

Things that are very, very difficult become very, very easy if you remember Caitanya Mahaprabhu, but if you forget Lord Caitanya then the easiest thing becomes very, very difficult. Of course the most difficult thing is to understand Krsna. Sri-caitanyam namami tam, there is nothing more difficult than Krsna, but even understanding Krsna becomes very easy.

Srila Prabhupada gave us as the example, that we don't have any historical or cultural background for the most part. By we I mean devotees from western backgrounds, but still he says we understand Krsna, you are dedicating your lives to the Krsna consciousness movement. That happens by Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy.

Here Kaviraja Goswami writes:

anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau

Arpita, anarpita, not bestowed. He says what Caitanya Mahaprabhu has given has not been bestowed for a long, long time. This is interesting because just prior to Caitanya Mahaprabhu's appearance Lord Krsna is appearing, 4500 years earlier. But even Krsna didn't give. It hadn't been given for a long time, meaning that even though Krsna personally appeared, he bestowed love for himself upon his associates, but for the most part Krsna was not directly accepted or recognized by the people in general. And although he liberated many personalities, on the battle of Kuruksetra all the millions of warriors who were there and able to see Krsna, then Srila Prabhupada points out that they received their original forms when they left their bodies. And they all left their bodies because aside from the Pandavas and a few others, nobody walked off that battlefield alive.

They were able to attain liberation but they were not able to receive what Caitanya Mahaprabhu here is distributing. And what is that, sama-arpayitum, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is giving. Just like we have kirtana and sankirtana, the prefix san means it is complete. So not only was it not given for a long time, but now Cm is giving it completely? What is he giving, unnatojjvala rasa, which Srila Prabhupada translates as the conjugal mellow of his own devotional service.

Later on in the third chapter of this Adi-lila, then Kaviraja describes this verse. He doesn't actually describe the conjugal mellow specifically, but rather he describes vraja-bhakti, or spontaneous devotional service. He points out that particularly in friendship, in parental affection and conjugal love, this is actually what Caitanya Mahaprabhu actually came to give. Lord Krsna showed it, but he didn't give it, or he gave it only to a very few associates. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu came and he distributed, Krsna-prema pradayate, to anyone who was willing to accept his mercy, karuna.

There are different words or terms used for mercy. Sometimes the word daya, or the word krpa, sometimes karuna. Even just hearing the word karuna, it is a more intimate form of mercy. Krpa is more, like often people say please give me your krpa, some stranger will come up to you, "Give me your krpa," it is a more formal thing, something that you give. Karuna is something that is very heartfelt, you give to someone who is very close. This is one of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's unique characteristics, that he considers all, especially Bengalis, there is one verse by Rupa Goswami where he says that Bengalis are actually his family members. . . but Caitanya Mahaprabhu actually considers all conditioned souls on the level of family, not very formal. Sarva-dharman parityajya is a formal declaration. . . rather very heartfelt, so he gives his karuna which is something very, very rare. Something that Krsna doesn't give in other incarnations, he only hits about or hints to in Bhagavad-gita, and this is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission. This is his, what Srila Prabhupada says, is external, the external cause of his appearance.

The two subsequent verses talk about the internal cause, the confidential cause. Elsewhere Srila Prabhupada calls it the real cause of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's appearance. So there are these two things, there is what is the internal purpose that Caitanya Mahaprabhu is trying to achieve and is something that he is relishing himself, and the other is what he is giving or bestowing to all others.

This verse is somewhat synonymous with the well-known verse in Srimad Bhagavatam that is quoted throughout all of Srila Prabhupada's books. There Maharaja Nimi is asking who is the incarnation for this age and what is the process of worship. Karabhajana Muni replies:

krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah (SB 11.5.32)

This is about Caitanya Mahaprabhu and his particular mission, what is he achieving. It describes his transcendental features. Prabhupada calls it the most famous verse about Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya is being described as krsnavarnam, this word varna has different meanings. Just like Krsna says catur varnyam maya-srstam, so varna means category.

In the verse that preceded it, it ends "tac-chrnum", Karabhajana Muni talks about the previous ages, he gives the incarnations and mantras by which they are worshipped and also the sacrifice which is appropriate to them. Then he says "Now listen to me." Just like Krsna in Bhagavad-gita also says tac-chrnu,

mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-asrayah (Bg 7.1)

When someone is about to say something very important then he attracts that person's attention by saying, "Listen to what I am going to say." Then he says krsnavarnam, yes, he is the same category as Krsna. Srila Prabhupada also usually translates this word varna as someone who is always saying the word Krsna, that is also krsnavarnam, on one whose tongue the name Krsna is always vibrating. But he is tvisa-akrsnam, means that his complexion is not blackish, the prefix a means not. It is something else, he has a different complexion. What is that complexion? We know his complexion is golden.

When Srila Prabhupada quotes this verse, he always quotes another verse, which I forget. When Nanda Maharaja was having the birth ceremony of Krsna, suklo raktas tatha pitah idanim krsnatam gatah, when Nanda Maharaja was taking Krsna and Balarama for his name-giving ceremony, at that time they were performing it in the goshalla because they were afraid that Kamsa would find out if it was some big public ceremony. So they did it in private and Gargamuni was present. He spoke this verse. He was describing Balarama and then he described Krsna, asavarnam, again this word varna, he says your son has appeared as a white incarnation, red incarnation, yellow and now, idanim, appears in a blackish form.

It is interesting that the chronology there is suklo rakta tatha pita, Satya-yuga is white, then red incarnation and now he is appearing in, . . . ? Srila Prabhupada says sometimes he appears as Lord Ramacandra. Just like whenever Krsna appears, Caitanya Mahaprabhu appears and preceding them Lord Ramacandra appears. Once every 28 millenniums those three incarnations appear.

First he says Lord Caitanya, pita, yellowish or golden complexion. So akrsna is that he is not blackish, he is pita, yellow golden. But now he is appearing in this darkish complexion. . . . In Kali-yuga the yuga-avatara is always blackish, except when Caitanya Mahaprabhu appears. And the change in the chronology was given to emphasise that Krsna is appearing now in this blackish form as he is svayam-bhagavan, but the golden-complexioned one is the same as this blackish-complexioned one.

In Caitanya-mangala, Locana Das Thakur gives this very nice description between Lord Brahma and Narada Muni. Narada Muni asks what is the evidence that Caitanya Mahaprabhu is actually of the same category as Krsna? What is the sastric statement that says that? Lord Brahma said I meditated on this for a long time and I came to the conclusion that this is what Krsna himself says in the Bhagavad-gita:

yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srjamy aham

paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge (Bg 4.7-8)

He says, why does Krsna say yuge yuge? Because I appear to do three things, in this age and in the next age, yuge yuge. In this age, and in the next age.

So that is a very nice explanation. This is what Lord Brahma meditates on, these kind of philosophical concepts. So Krsna appears, but after Krsna, in the same category is Krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam.

Kaviraja Goswami gives us this blessing, meditate on Caitanya Mahaprabhu, sada hrdaya kandare, kandara means like a cave. Srila Prabhupada translates like that, in the cavity of the heart. Always keep Lord Caitanya in your heart. This is the blessing that we are receiving, to somehow or other keep Lord Caitanya in our hearts. It's not a very difficult thing because Lord Caitanya is karunaya, he is very merciful, he is very beautiful, sango-pangastra parsadam. These words are described or defined in different ways, different acaryas give various explanations of who are the sanga, who are the upanga, who are the astra, who are the parsada. But generally they all agree that the astra, the weapon, Caitanya Mahaprabhu's weapon is his beauty, his extraordinary beautiful form:

suvarna-varno hemango varangas candanangadi

His suvarna, his bodily hue is very, very beautiful, he has very long arms. You can just imagine, as Srila Prabhupada said as our Panca Tattva, unless something happened over the last 500 years in terms of the size. . . Caitanya Mahaprabhu was seven and a half feet tall and Bengalis are really not known for their height, unless something changed. I know in England, between the First World War and the Second World War, the average height of men was about three inches higher. But in those two world wars so many of the men lost their lives that the average general height decreased. But generally the Bengalis are intellectuals, they just think out the wars and let the Punjabis and others do the fighting.

When we used to come into Calcutta, for many years right outside Dum Dum Airport, there was this big sign: Welcome to the City of Intellectuals. Now they took it down, I don't know if that means anything.

Imagine Caitanya Mahaprabhu, seven and a half feet tall, that's tall by any calculation, but especially in a state where generally people are of a smaller stature. He was very, very beautiful, his shoulders are like that of a lion, nyagrodha-parimandala, his arms are reaching down to his knees, and his features are just so beautiful, his eyes are very long.

I remember when I was in Jaipur ordering the Gaura Nitai Deities for Hungary, and I asked the murti-wallah who was carving the Deities, "You have to make the eyes larger." He said no, this is the size. I said they have to be larger, sastra says the eyes have to be larger. Anyway, he made them larger.

We had experience before when I had them paint Ramacandra green when we were ordering the Sita Rama Deities which were originally supposed to be for Chicago but they ended up in Bhaktivedanta Manor, and I asked him to paint Lord Ramacandra green. He said, no he also black like Krsna. Finally, we were paying the bill, so he had to paint him green. And all the murti-wallahs came and thought it was very entertaining that Lord Ramacandra was green. Prabhupada says he is green like a parrot.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu's beauty is his astra, we have this word in English, disarming. It's a weapon, it just disarms you. So one weapon is that you counteract someone else's weapon, but Caitanya Mahaprabhu's beauty and his kindness and his qualities, his humility, if you just consider. . . .

Lord Caitanya, when he went to Isvara Puri's birthplace, he took dust and for the rest of his life he would every day eat a little bit of that dust. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's astra. If we keep Lord Caitanya always within our hearts then Krsna consciousness becomes easy, chanting Hare Krsna becomes very easy, and by Lord Caitanya's grace then we get to back home, back to Godhead.

How long does this class go to? 8:15. Yajnaih sankirtana prayaih, praya means almost. The way to please Caitanya Mahaprabhu is not very difficult. There is this very wonderful letter that Srila Prabhupada wrote. I don't remember to who, but it had to do with worshipping Deities. He says, yes, you can worship Deities, but if you just have a picture of Panca Tattva, he says you can keep it in a drawer, you take it out, you chant Hare Krsna to him and you put him back in the drawer, he says Panca Tattva are so merciful that just do that, then they will save you, they will deliver you. That is enough.

To worship Caitanya Mahaprabhu, to keep him in our heart, and to have him manifest all of the wonderful treasures that he is giving to us requires mostly to chant Hare Krsna. Mostly means hearing Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita. Srila Prabhupada gave very, very short classes. 18 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes is like a long class. And sometimes when he had his disciples at a certain point he would say, "Ok, now chant Hare Krsna."

Yajnaih sankirtana prayair, and Deity worship. So Deity worship is also there and obviously hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam, but mostly chanting Hare Krsna. And if we chant Hare Krsna, we apply ourselves in japa, we chant together in kirtana, but most importantly that we chant Hare Krsna by taking the holy name out on the streets, chanting it for the benefit of others. Narada Muni says that this has 100 times greater benefit. Harinama-sankirtana has 100 times more benefit than that which benefits ourselves. And the varna, the category of that chanting Hare Krsna, distributing books, distributing prasadam. . . .

Once Srila Prabhupada visited Montreal in 1975. I was distributing books and he was sitting at the airport, and I wanted. . . Srila Prabhupada came in the morning and then he got a telegram that Indira Gandhi was willing to meet him. So he immediately arranged to get on the plane and he was off by the afternoon. He was there for no more than four or five hours. I asked Srila Prabhupada what is more important, book distribution, prasadam distribution or chanting Hare Krsna? And he knew what I wanted him to say, which was book distribution. So he said that they are all equally important. I said I know, but of the three, Srila Prabhupada, which do you prefer? And he said they are all equally important. Prabhupada wouldn't budge.

So yes, distributing prasadam, distributing Krsna's holy name, distributing transcendental knowledge by Srila Prabhupada's books, by speaking about Krsna, by doing that type of sankirtan Lord Caitanya is very easily pleased. And when Lord Caitanya is pleased, then our success in Krsna consciousness is guaranteed.

Then this unnatojjvala rasa, Rupa Goswami uses this word, ujjvala. He gave a further explanation on his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu in his Ujjvala-nilamani, describing the transcendental exchanges between the gopis and Krsna. He called that the Ujjvala-nilamani, the blazing sapphire. On one hand that refers to Krsna, and also ujjvala refers to, as it describes here, the blazing loving transcendental exchange between Krsna and his associates. Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to give this very rare thing.

Srila Prabhupada would glorify it, quoting this commentary on Srimad-Bhagavatam:

aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa tanayas, tad dhama vrndavanam

That the original mellow, the adi-rasa, is the original parakiya, or conjugal mellow, which is kept very secret due to its confidential nature. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, through the teachings of Caitanya-caritamrta, gave us the opportunity to hear about that and cultivate all of these aspects of spontaneous service, which are the real treasure of Goloka Vrindavan. Sriyam means treasure.

I'll stop here unless anyone would like to add something or ask something. Gokulananda Prabhu? Gokulananda Prabhu is my siksa guru. He pulled me out of the material world, taught me how to distribute Prabhupada's books. I was sitting in a vegetarian restaurant with my wife and he walked in selling BTGs. And I saw him from the other end of the room and I said "Oh, no." And he saw me and he said, "Peter!" Thank you very much. This was in Montreal. (applause)

I was reading Srila Prabhupada's books twelve hours a day, and the day I came in after the morning programme and was doing my reading. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and said what are you doing? I said I'm reading, I read Prabhupada's books quite a bit. He said, well, we've got some news for you. Here we distribute Srila Prabhupada's books, we don't just read them. And then he took me out and showed me how to distribute BTGs, and we got arrested in the afternoon and spent the afternoon in jail. (laughter) I didn't know this is what Krsna consciousness was about. . . .

The question was the reference for Narada Muni saying that sankirtan is 100 times more potent. No, I can't remember the reference, but it's there in one of our sloka books. You have it, Kratu Prabhu? It's there, it may be pancaratra, but it is there, it is not an obscure reference.

Devotee: Thank you, Maharaja, for a very nice glorification of Lord Caitanya. Could you give us a little glimpse into Lord Caitanya's audarya-bhava, his mood of giving Krsna to the whole world which is considered higher than madhurya. Or within madhurya that audarya is present within Radharani's heart and how Lord Caitanya exhibited that.

HH Sivarama Swami: Here this is audarya-dhama. And I think what you are emphasizing, not necessarily that audarya is higher than madhurya, but the fact is that madhurya becomes inaccessible to us without madhurya. So in the conclusion to Prarthana, Narottam Das Thakur says that this path of vraja-bhakti is very slippery and very difficult.

Here it is achievable without effort. Audarya means mercy. The mood of the followers of Caitanya Mahaprabhu is that we worship Lord Caitanya in the mood of servitude, bas. There is no other relationship that Gaudiya Vaisnavas have with Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Even Lord Nityananda declares this, everyone is a servant of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. By serving him, his munifence and kindness is that automatically devotional service becomes manifest, achieved.

So in that sense the audarya is most visible in the fact that something that is very difficult or more or less impossible for people to access in Kali-yuga can, without risk, be easily achieved by serving Caitanya Mahaprabhu. That's why Srila Prabhupada put so much emphasis on serving the Krsna consciousness mission without necessarily making some kind of completely independent effort in cultivating vraja-bhakti. This is because within Lord Caitanya's service automatically vraja-bhakti naturally comes.

That is what is stated right here. He is giving it. Karunayavatirna kalau, this is his audarya, this is his karuna, Lord Caitanya's mercy is if you keep Caitanya Mahaprabhu in your hearts, chant Hare Krsna, serve his mission, then naturally those gifts of pure devotion and the things that Krsna came to show, they will naturally come, naturally manifest.

One last question.

Devotee: Maharaja, earlier in the class you mentioned how the people on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra attained liberation. I was wondering if you could explain, as the vast majority of those didn't understand Krsna's actual position, what was the nature of their liberation and what destination did they attain?

HH Sivarama Swami: Prabhupada states, as well as other commentators, that they achieved their original forms. By dying on the battlefield, by seeing Krsna, what liberated them was the fact that they were actually able to perceive Krsna. They saw Krsna driving Arjuna's chariot and that vision of Partha-sarathi, seeing Krsna at the time of death:

yam yam vapi smaran bhavan

and at the same time dying on the battlefield, meaning that they were then freed of the results of their sinful activities, they were able to attain an original form. What that original form is, that I have not heard elaborated. But I would suggest that is not particularly the same type of benefit that one would achieve by serving Caitanya Mahaprabhu. But still they were actually able to achieve that type of perfection. They saw Krsna as they left this world. Although they may have been all differently situated, many of them antagonists, but everyone appreciated, once again, Krsna's beauty, and Krsna's humility. That Krsna was willing to take the role of a sudra, a chariot driver is a sudra's business, just in order to serve Arjuna. And everyone appreciated that. That appreciation was their faith and from there they were actually able to move forward.

Time for greeting the Deities. Thank you very much. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki jai!

Paramananda madhavam sri caitanya isvaram. The situation in Navadvip and the whole of India that time was that people were religious but they were not spiritual. They were religious just to show on the outside but actually they did not know the purpose of religion. People spent a lot to marry off their daughter, to put on a big show to show that they were very religious. One such wealthy had no more daughters to marry off then he married a female cat or a female dog or some demigod. So this was not even in scripture. Marriage is for human beings. Like that they were doing all sorts of bogus religious activities just to show off.

The Vaisnavas were seeing how the people were wasting their valuable human life and nobody was taking up the process of bhagavat-dharma. At that time Sitanath Advaita Gosai was feeling very concerned about how to deliver the fallen souls. So He decided to do a special fast and yajna to bring the Lord down. Since He was an avatara of Maha Visnu therefore His name was Advaita. So He is non-different from Krishna. So He said, "Since I am non-different I will bring Him down. He must come also."

So He began fasting and He was worshipping His saligram sila. By the way they say that saligrama is still in Santipura if you want to see. So He worshipped the saligram with Ganges water and Tulasi leaves and manjaris and loud crying - Govinda, Govinda, Hare Krishna - to bring the Lord down. His loud cries went all over the universe. His worship, his fasting! So this also reached Lord Caitanya and He agreed to come down.

At the same time or a similar time Jagannath Misra and Saci-mata had eight daughters but mysteriously each daughter died after childbirth. Jagannath Misra was very frustrated so he did a Visnu yajna for a son. Thus he was blessed with a son whom he named Visvarupa. Visvarupa was an expansion of Lord Baladeva. So he was Sankarsana. He was very powerful. He had prepared the womb to receive Lord Caitanya.

Then Jagannath Misra had a dream where he saw a radiant light come on his head to his heart and cross over to the heart of Saci-mata and go into her womb. So he told her about his dream. He thought, "A great soul will be born to us." And then she became pregnant. Everybody changed. They started treating Jagannath Misra with so much respect and they gave him donations. He was a poor brahmana and so doing his duties he barely made ends meet. But now he was getting things were made of gold and silver. He was amazed at what happened. "It was like the goddess of fortune was living in my house."

Meanwhile the devas knew the Supreme Lord was going to make His appearance and so they came and offered their prayers to Lord Caitanya in the womb of Mother Saci. They prayed that, "You are going to give out love of Krishna freely to all the conditioned souls. So we are Your devotees in the heavenly planets, the devas and we need Your mercy more. We don't have material problems because in heavenly planets there is a very comfortable lifestyle but we have two problems. One problem is that sometimes the daityas, the asuras attack us and we have to fight against them risking our lives. Secondly we are so comfortable that we forget to worship You. Therefore we live in a kind of sense gratification and as a result we don't get love of Krishna. So we need Your mercy more. We need Your mercy so that we can get love of Krishna. So please have mercy on us."

Normally the devas would be invisible but somehow Saci-mata saw their shadows. By the will of the Lord they cast some shadows so she thought a spirit has come so she started to chant Nrsimha mantras -

namas te narasimhaya prahladahlada-dayine hiranyakasipor vaksah-sila-tanka-nakhalaye [Sri Nrsimha Pranama]

So the devas thought, "How can she see us? How does she know we are here? This is all because of the Lord." So they had to suddenly leave. So they thought so many things are happening. The thirteenth month of her pregnancy had come up so Saci-mata went to see her father who was Nilambara Cakravati. He was a famous astrologer. So they asked him when the child would be born. He said that He will be born this month at an auspicious time. So He was born on a full moon day. That day was a lunar eclipse. Since He is like a moon and is unblemished why would He need in the material moon which is full of marks?

So the moon was covered by Rahu and because of the lunar eclipse at that time all the Hindus went into the water of the Ganges and they thought it was pure to chant. Otherwise they wouldn't chant the holy names aloud. But in the water they chanted - Govinda, Govinda. Haribol. Haribol, Haribol. Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. So Srivas was hearing the loud chanting of the holy names and he said to his sons, "Why do they say this is an inauspicious day? Listen how everyone is chanting loudly the holy names. This is very auspicious." The Muslims heard the Hindus chanting and they were making fun, mocking the sinful Hindus - Haribol, Hare Rama hahahaha, Hare Krishna, hahahaha. So somehow or the other everybody was chanting Haribol, Haribol, Haribol Hare Krishna.

At that auspicious time Lord Caitanya appeared at the sunset and moonrise. Then even though they did not know why all the devotees began to dance. They felt so happy. Haridasa Thakura, Advaita Gosai, Srivas and everybody were dancing [Sings] Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. At that time as was customary Saci-mata was outside the house in a little cottage built under the neem tree. So Lord Caitanya was born under a neem tree. Therefore He got the nickname Nimai. A neem tree was considered very auspicious because it would keep away all the evil spirits, ghosts etc.

At that time the village ladies came to visit to see the newborn baby. He was golden in color. Taking the opportunity the heavenly devas descended from the heavenly planets and went along with the local residents to see the baby whom they knew to be an avatara of Lord Krishna. Mother Saci saw these beautiful ladies and wondered where they were all coming from. She did not know that some were devas and some were from other planets. At that time it was all the auspicious - simha, lagna, rasi - all the auspicious stars and astrological influences were there. All the planets lined up just to please the Lord.

On this day actually when the Ganges was brought down by Bhagirath had faced a lot of different problems. One problem was with Jahnu Muni. Jahnu Muni drank the Ganges. That problem was solved and Jahnu Muni re manifested the Ganges but the Ganges stopped outside the birthplace of Lord Caitanya and Bhaghirath was crying, "Why you are stopping?" And she said, "It will soon be Gaura-purnima and I want to be here on that day so that I can get the special blessings then I will go with you down to Sindh."

So today is also called the Ganganagar(?) day. The day of Lord Hanuman spreading love of Krishna along the Ganges. On this day many devotees like to take their bath. If you go in the morning you will get covered with colors. If you go in the afternoon it should be okay. But you must go in a group. If you are swimming please be very careful. Just dip and out or take some water.

In any case this is a very auspicious day. Lord Krishna although He appeared came in Kali-yuga as a devotee. He did not broadcast that he was the Lord. A few times to some individuals, to Advaita Gosai He showed who He was. Otherwise he would not allow anyone to break the protocol that He was a devotee because that was His lila. As a result many people don't understand how Lord Caitanya is actually an avatara. But if you see in the various scriptures He was predicted - that the Lord would come in Navadvip, He will be the son of Saci who will live for 24 years as a grhasta and 24 years as a sannyasi. All these things are predicted. So He matches up. He also did activities which no ordinary person could do. Also His symptoms matched with the prediction. So these are the three things how to confirm an avatara.

In two hundred years His movement was covering the whole of the eastern India. It was affected. But somehow there was an influence of sahajyaism that ...His movement. People thought that just by imagining they could be considered as a sakhi or some great devotee rather than try to please Krishna, try to serve Krishna, try to do what Krishna wants. Then Krishna will automatically recognise the devotee. Instead they just imagined that I could be whatever I want without doing any real service or sadhana. This was due to the whole influence of the Daityas. They teamed up with Kali to get the ...

So our great acaryas like Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakura had to fight to re-establish Vaisnavism where it belongs. In the time of Bhaktivinoda Thakura there were 30 apasampradayas. He sang about them: aula, baula, kartabhaja, prakrta-sahajiya, sakhi-bheki, jati-gosai, gaura-nagari. All those sampradayas are still there but they are not as strong as they used to be.

One time one of our friends, an editor of a paper had his office and residence in Navadvip brought over one sadhu. She was wearing a sari. I thought this was a chaste lady. She turned around and revealed she was a sakhi bheki. That means a man who is dressed like a lady. The mood was like a sakhi. He wants to experience what it feels like to be a manjari by dressing like one externally.

Prabhupada was saying how Bhaktisiddhanta fought to establish Krishna consciousness and to take away the dominion of the caste brahmanas who were controlling the whole thing. So these caste brahmanas the deferred that anyone who is not born brahmana, even if they are born brahmanas but have some lack in them are not bona fide. So they basically said that such great acaryas like Sanatan Goswami, Rupa Goswami, Narottama Syamananda and so many others are all unbona fide. They are only bona fide. So Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura had to go andcall a big meeting and then he said how a Vaisnava has all the qualifications of a brahmana and more.

So these caste brahamanas came together and they said Lord Caitanya is not an avatara. They claimed to be Lord Caitanya's descendants. Then Bhaktisiddhanta said from the Vedas and the Puranas how Lord Caitanya was predicted. Thus he established lord Caitanya to be actually Krishna avatara. After that these caste brahmanas were defeated.

So Prabhupada was able to initiate devotees all over the world as brahmanas, as Vaisnavas because of the work done by our previous acaryas. We have now the great duty to keep up the fight. Our duty is to establish Lord Caitanya in His rightful position as Krishna Himself who came as a devotee to give freely love of Krishna, to show how to be a devotee and for some internal reasons. So this is our duty. Once Prabhupada said: work now samadhi later.

I went to Srila Prabhupada when I became a devotee. I called my parents and I though they will be very pleased. I called them and told them, "Now I am a devotee and i have all these high moral standards." My father said, "I am disowning you. I am turning your name over to the American army. You have to fight in the Vietnam." I went to Prabhupada and said, "What shall I do? My father wants to turn me over to the army." He said, "Better you fight in Krishna's army."

So I joined Krishna's army. [Applause] So we need a lot of soldiers in an army. I am old now but still I am trying with my last breath to do something for Srila Prabhupada. All of you can please do something to spread this movement. The next thing I like to say he is a very good warrior - Sivarama Maharaj. The parliament n Hungary has declared Iskcon as a bona fide religion. All glories to HH Sivarama Swami and the Hungarian devotees. [Applause] Kirtan or any questions? We have a few minutes for questions.

Prabhu: Maharaj your holiness inspired our enthusiasm and dedicated devotional activities. Today the 526 birth anniversary of Lord Caitanya. You just mentioned that we are all members of the spiritual army of Lord Krishna. We are so much inspired by your devotion and dedication. Just mention please Lord Caitanya is the universal Lord. Why do so many people say that only brahmana can become the pujari of Lord Krishna temple? Why Lord Caitanya mentioned that: prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama, sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama. Lord Caitanya said that: kiba vipra, kiba nyasi, sudra kene naya, yei krsna-tattva-vetta, sei 'guru' haya [Cc Madhya 8.128] Why so many spiritual personalities say that only guru should be a brahmana? Hare Krishna.

HH Jayapataka Swami: Because some authorities do not know the Vaisnava philosophy. If they know the Vaisnava philosophy they do not say that. That is why you have to read Prabhupada's books. There are ample books, ample sastra that says that one is brahmana not by birth. Krishna also says: guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg 4.13] By quality, by work. He does not say janma karma, He says guna karma. So these people just want to establish their birthright. By birth right they are brahmana bandhu. To become a brahmana their parents should have done garbhodana samskara. If they did not do that, then they are not really brahmanas. In Kali-yuga one should be a Vaisnava and then automatically the twelve qualities of a brahmana will manifest in that devotee. There are many examples were the brahmanas did not know Vaisnava philosophy as taught by Srila Prabhupada. They are in their little box. They don't see the bigger picture. They don't know all the sastras. To preach in India you have to know the sastra because people are a bit more philosophical.

I was standing in Hyderbad outside the general Post Office and someone walked up to me and said, 'Excuse me. In chapter 12 of Bhagavad-gita, verse 18 says that..." You don't get that kind of question in America or London usually while standing on a public street. So here you have to know philosophy. If you do then there is no problem. Sastra supports - we are not just sentimentalists.

Mataji: Hare Krishna Maharaj. We are very grateful for the activities we have done in the past few years. Your health condition is not so good. My question is if we do some sinful activities and you have to take them. Is there any way you can teach us how to avoid that or to improve that so that you cannot take too much of our sins?

HH Jayapataka Swami: One thing is if you sin a lot, doing sinful activities. Through our daily activities of Tulasi puja, japa, seeing the Deities we can burn lot of karma. From the disciples side they should avoid committing sinful activities. The siksa guru does not get sinful activities unless he gives wrong siksa. The diksa guru gets some reactions if the disciple doesn't follow. Like Prabhupada said if they come up want to advance in Krishna consciousness and if they are serious and sincere you should not turn them away. So we have some testing to see if people are really serious beyond that what can we do? Kirtan! [Applause]

By Madhava Smullen for ISKCON News on 3 Mar 2012

Bhaktin Radhika Mehta In the past five years, one young woman from Chowpatty, Mumbai, has broken all women’s book distribution records, and many overall records too.

Bhaktin Radhika Mehta is an enigma. Since she began in 2007, she has distributed 228,016 of Srila Prabhupada’s books—nearly a quarter of a million. According to the World Sankirtan Newsletter, in five years, she has given out more books than any other female distributor since 1982.

In 2009 and 2010, she hit the number two and number one spots respectively out of all book distributors internationally, men and women. In 2011, she again was number one in the world, although this time under the category of “Team Book Distribution.” During the 2011 Prabhupada Marathon alone—between November 15th and January 5th—she distributed 66,000 books.

For the past four years—2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011—Bhaktin Radhika, still in her thirties, has received the World Book Distribution Award from ISKCON sannyasis at ISKCON’s headquarters in Mayapur Dhama, West Bengal. All this despite the struggle of living on her own outside the brahmachari-only Chowpatty ISKCONtemple.

So how did she get started? How does she do it? And what makes her tick?

The key lies in the way she always says ‘we’ rather than ‘I’ when talking about distributing books. For Radhika, ‘we’ means her Deities of Jagannath (whom she lovingly calls ‘Gopal’), Baladeva, and Subhadra; her guru Radhanath Swami and instructional guru Jayapataka Swami; and her parents, Navin and Pallavi Mehta. All of them are her life and soul, and constantly support and encourage her.

Radhika is especially grateful to her guru Radhanath Swami, whom she says made her the person she is today.

Their first meeting came about in January 2005, when Radhika, a fashion designer who made a living designing clothes for affluent families, was invited to an event at the home of her friends Yash Birla—chairman of the multi-billion dollar Yash Birla Group—and his wife Avanti.

Radhanath Swami was invited to the event, where he sang kirtan and gave a lecture on Krishna consciousness that made a huge impression Radhika.

“Lord Krishna arranged for the first devotee I ever met to be my Guru Maharaja,” she says. “I began going to see him every week, and he would spend an hour at a time with me, explaining the philosophy. At our third meeting, he gave me a copy of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is. With that, he brought me into the beautiful world of the Vaishnavas, and I began to regularly visit Radha Gopinath Mandir in Chowpatty. I received so much love from Radhanath Swami and from the devotees of Radha-Gopinath Mandir that all I wanted to do was give that love to others.”

And so, on December 3rd, 2007, Bhaktin Radhika began to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books. As she took her Deities with her, and took shelter of Krishna at every step, the results were astonishing.

“On the first day, I took two boxes of books, got into a taxi, and headed into town,” she says. “Paramatma—Lord Krishna in my heart—was guiding me, telling me ‘Go to this building, go to that building.’ I followed His directions, going door to door from top to bottom, and like magic, the boxes were emptied.”

The next day, she brought eight boxes of books, distributing them at apartment buildings and offices, and again sold everything she had.

On the third day, Radhika set a goal to distribute 1,080 Bhagavad-gitas, but fell short by thirteen. Praying to Krishna to help her meet her goal, she was approached by a distraught-looking lady as she made her way from the Chowpatty temple to her house in the evening. There had been a death in the woman’s family, it turned out, and she wanted exactly thirteen copies of the Bhagavad-gita to console her bereaved family.

From there, Bhaktin Radhika’s book distribution began to really expand. She explored Mumbai, and even flew to different cities around India. One day, she’d be in Delhi. The next day, in Hyderabad. Everywhere, she met the most affluent people who wanted to support her mission.

“I don’t read the newspaper, watch television, or read billboards,” she says. “I’m not a computer person, and I don’t have anyone helping me and giving me names and lists. But somehow I just know where to go. Krishna takes me where I need to be.”

Wherever she is, Radhika approaches offices of a variety of businesses, such as diamond merchants and laywers’ firms, carrying Bhagavad-gitas and Krishna books, a box of prasadam (sanctified food), and laminated pictures of Radha and Krishna.

Some are major companies whose security don’t even allow anyone past the lobby unless they are staff or have an appointment. But for Bhaktin Radhika, Krishna opens every door. She smiles sweetly and gives the security staff a book and some prasadam, and they let her through. The lift operator carries her books for her.

The boss’s secretary receives her happily, and before she knows it, she finds herself sitting in front of the boss of the company.

“He happily buys a Krishna book and a Bhagavad-gita for himself,” she says. “Then I request him to chant the Hare Krishna mantra, and he does. Then I ask him to please give me ten minutes of his time, and he does. And then that ten minutes turns into forty-five minutes of me talking about Krishna’s glories as he sits and listens while honoring the Prasad I’ve brought.”

Finally, when she feels he is ready, Radhika asks the boss to donate money so that she can give books for free to the poor and needy. Some bosses donate enough for a few books, some for several hundred, and a handful for as many as one thousand books.

Radhika then visits hospitals, cancer wards, retirement homes, municipal schools, orphanages, and children’s remand homes, bringing Krishna consciousness, and with it some peace and hope of a better future.
Often, her father or a couple of other devotees help her bring an altar with her Deities, as well as a huge banner of Sri-Sri Radha Madhava and Sri-Sri Pancha-Tattva in Mayapur, prasadam, books, maha-mantra stickers, and five hundred sets of japa beads.

“In schools and orphanages, I hand all the children and staff some beads, and they chant one entire round, 108 beads, of the Hare Krishna maha mantra together loudly, which takes around fifteen minutes,” Radhika says. “It’s wonderful to see them all chanting so enthusiastically and happily.”

Radhika then gives a small class on the philosophy of Krishna consciousness in Hindi or Marathi, after which she invites the children to approach the altar in line, pay their respects to the Lord, and receive a free Bhagavad-gita and five laddhu sweets each.

In municipal hospitals and cancer wards, she carries the books in on stretchers, assisted by security. As in the office buildings, staff at first don’t want to let Radhika in to certain areas such as the ICU, but soon find themselves granting her full access.

In some of the eighteen BMC government hospitals in Mumbai she has visited, the conditions are dire. “I see things like one person asleep on top of a bed, and three lying width-ways underneath it, their clothes filled with stool and blood,” she says. “It’s so sad.”

Radhika visits each and every patient, chanting the protective Narasimha prayers softly and reading one verse from the Bhagavad-gita to them, whether they are conscious or not. To some of them she feeds charinamrita, the water that has bathed the Deities’ feet. She also gives them stickers of the Hare Krishna mantra and Bala Gopal, as well as a free copy of the Bhagavad-gita. Some, although poor, giver her a five or ten rupee donation because they want to show their gratitude, and chant blissfully along with her.

In 2011, Radhika spent much of her time in the pilgrimage city of Pandharpur, especially during the Prabhupada Marathon, and during the month of Ashadh (June-July) when around half a million pilgrims come to pay their respects at the temple of Lord Vitthal.

“Some devotees from the small local ISKCON temple helped me, and we set up a small booth opposite Lord Vitthal’s temple, which we filled with boxes of books, buckets of delicious halava, and maha-mantra stickers,” she says. “Oceans of pilgrims came by, chanted the Holy Name with us with lots of love, and took Prasad and books for a discounted price. There were so many we had to keep going back to the temple to get more books and halava or laddhus! Local children helped so much, carrying the books for me. We also did several programs at schools in local villages, giving out books along with arati, kirtan, and prasadam. Two to three thousand books were going out every day. It was wonderful.”

Although Bhaktin Radhika sells so many books, and often gets donations from wealthy businessmen that more than cover the cost for each book; and although her travels and projects are expensive, she doesn’t take one single penny for herself. Instead, she gives all the money to the temple, and supports herself using savings from her successful former career as a fashion designer.

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Radhika. She’s struggled being the only woman book distributor in her area, and actually collapsed due to malnourishment in September 2011 because she was so absorbed in book distribution that she neglected to take care of her body. But she has since recovered, and continues to derive energy from the Lord, her gurus Radhanath Swami and Jayapataka Swami, the devotees, and her parents.

“I’m thankful for the struggles I’ve been through, because they have made me stronger in my service,” she says. “All I ask is that the devotees who read my story please bless me so that I can continue to distribute Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gitas with lots of humility and compassion.”
