October 29. ISKCON 50 – S.Prabhupada Daily Meditations. Prabhupada did not judge beforehand who would serve Krishna’s mission and who would not. He was fully surrendered and fully dependant on Krishna. In obedience to his spiritual master he would approach everyone without discrimination to ask for help. There was Sumati Morarji. She had helped him in publishing the Bhagavatam and she had sent him to America. In a recent letter to her, he had only given hints: I am just giving you the idea, and if you kindly think over the matter seriously and consult your beloved Lord Bala Krishna, surely you will be further enlightened in the matter. There is scope and there is certain necessity also, and it is the duty of every Indian, especially the devotees of Lord Krishna, to take up the matter. But he had received no reply. He had not heard from her since Butler. Those words from her that had seemed prophetic and they had struck with him: “I feel that you should stay there until you fully recover from your illness and return only after you have completed your mission.” Read the entire article here: http://www.dandavats.com/?p=20490/#29 October 29. Sri Jagannath Ratha Yatra in Probolinggo

By Acyuta Krishna das

Lord Jagannath never stops giving His mercy to the devotees and people of Indonesia. Many cities in Indonesia already got Lord Jagannatha’s glance. This was Lord Jagannath touring program through ratha yatra. As Srila prabhupada mention on his letter that “This touring program, going from town to town with sankirtana party and distributing our literatures is our real program. So do it enthusiastically and with determination and surely Caitanya Mahaprabhu will bless you more and more.” (SPL to Vamanadeva, August 31st, 1971).

The Nusantara Culture Parade on Sempiro (a week stay in Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia) attracted many people to come and participate. They came with their culture and in various types of costumes. Surya Narayana prabhu and his wife (disciple of H.H. Subhag Swami Maharaj) and Karabhajan prabhu, who resides in Probolinggo continually do sankirtan in Probolinggo to attract the Lord to come to Probolinggo. They were eagerly that there were would be a ratha yatra in probolinggo. They used all his efforts how Ratha yatra could participate on the parade. By humble prayer to Lord Jaganatha he invited the Lord to bestow His mercy to the probolinggo people. He made communication with the government officer to propose that Ratha yatra as one of the participant in the cultural parade and the committee allowed the devotees participated in the parade. A day after the birth day of Lord Balaram August 30, 2015, Lord Jagannatha, Lord Baladeva, and Their beloved sister Subadra Devi gave special mercy to the citizens of Probolinggo on a ratha yatra festival. This is the First ratha yatra in Prolinggo, East Java.

A day before Ratha yatra, on Balarama appearance day, August 29, the devotees from around Nusantara (Indonesia) arrived in the Hare Krishna center in Prolinggo. The only purpose of their participation was to do devotional service to Lord Krishna. They helped the committee in preparing the festival. Some devotees made garlan, other decorated the chariot, and some other cooked for the devotees. They were so happy and enjoy the service that they could do for the Lord.

Srila prabhupada mention on his letter that “The faith increases in Krsna consciousness by our voluntary increase of serving Krsna. Serving Krsna is unlimited and He can accept our unlimited service, and award us unlimited transcendental pleasure in the unlimited service of the Lord.” (SPL to Brahmananda, 20th February, 1968)

Celebrated the 50th years of Srila Prbhupada’s Journey to Amerika, the devotees did Guru puja and darsan to Lords Jagannath, Balarama and Subadra Devi. The deities arrived in Probolingo at 17.00 PM after one hour journey from Jember temple. Devotees also observed the last Julana Yatra festival on the evening. That day was really a festival day. After the program they continued to food distribution in front of the center where only in half hour two big food containers of prasadam were distributed to the local people. There is a Hindu community temple beside the center. On the purnima people gather to do prayer. They really are respect and welcome the devotees. This chance was used by the devotees to preach. The devotee arranged bhagavad-gita reading and distributed prasadam. They accepted it with pleasure. They also said that they would participate in the ratha yatra.

On the day of the festival, devotees woke up at 01.30 am early in the morning. They finished their japa round before manggala arati. They were really enthusiast to participate and do devotional service. They were so busy that no chance for maya approached them. At 09.00 AM. The Lords were carried to the chariot. The melodious kirtan accompanied the procession. The pujari then offered bhoga and continued with arati. A recorded class from H.H. Subhag Swami Maharaj was heard and translated by H.G sundaranandana prabhu made the devotees more enthusiast. The Lord then offered coconut with camphor lamp and it signed that the ratha yatra was begun. The devotees pulled the chariot that already beautifully decorated to the place of parade.

The devotees had to wait for five hours before starting. This condition was used by the devotees to do Harinama Sankirtana. Crowded of people attracted by the Mahamantra sang by the devotees lead by Premadhana prabhu. Srila Prabhupada stated in his letter that “This sound vibration is not material, it is spiritual and powerful beyond our conception. So it cannot be hindered in any way by something material; it surpasses all these material barriers.” (SPL to Mukunda and Janaki, 28th February, 1968). Many people stopped their paces just to listen the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. Some of them even captivated and danced with the devotees. The weather became hot and it never stopped them to dance and sing. Srila Prabhupada also mentioned in his letter that “even they are chanting Hare Krsna in mockery still it doesn’t matter. Just so long as they are chanting Hare Krsna, that is the success of our mission. SPL to Upendra, 5th February, 1968).

Some devotees distributed the prasadam in form of cookies and a ton of oranges which was donated by Dina Darini mataji. The devotees also did book distribution. The most interesting thing in Lampung, other part of Indonesia, the devotees also did ratha yatra. The book competition of book distribution was always reported between devotees in Lampung and Probolinggo through social media. every single book of srilaprabhupada was reported to H.H. Subhag Swami Maharaj and maharaj again and again motivated and encourage the devotees to distribute more book. About 120 book were distributed to people who mostly muslim.

At 14.00 PM was the turn of devotees to enter the honored stage. The crowd made the chariot difficult to move. Even the polices officer and the army could take care of the mass that over already over flood the main way. Than one devotee took Jagannath flag and started waving, suddenly the crowded divide into two and gave away to the Lord to move forward. The devotees had three minutes to perform the attraction in front of the guests. On behalf of devotees Adipurusa prabhu and Sundarananda prabhu presented a copy of Bhagavad-gita as it is to the mayor of Probolinggo, Mrs. Rukmini Buchori and her vice Mr. Suhadak, and other officer of Probolinggo. A beautiful rasa dance was performed by devotees lead by mahapavitra mataji gave different color to the parade. The unique of Hare Krishna Mahamantra tune attracted many people to see the Lord and the performance of the devotees. The devotees start the ratha yatra from Panglima Sudirman Street then Gatot Subroto Street, A Yani Street, and finished in front of city field. It was about five kilometers.

Lord Nityananda has opened up the Marketplace of the Holy Name, meant for the deliverance of all fallen souls. Now as the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada the Marketplace of the Holy Name is opened in every towns and vilages. All devotees and people who saw and heard the Holy Name in Probolinggo became very happy.

Our ever grateful obeisances are due to HH Kavichandra Swami and HH Ramai Swami, the GBCs of Indonesia, for their support and guidance to always look for new avenues for sankirtan. Our humble obeisances to HH Subhag Swami for always reminding us of the importance of the Sankirtan movement of Mahaprabu and inspiring us with the dedication of Sriman Jayananda Prabhu, for bringing us closer to Srila Prabhupada and keeping us united in family of ISKCON. A Story of Humble Success in the Ukraine

slider1night-compressor

Dear Your Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaj!

Please accept our humble obeisances!

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

We are Varanasi Devi Dasi and Gopi Nandini Devi Dasi, the disciples of His Grace Chaitanya Chandra Charan Prabhu. In September 2014 by the causeless mercy of Guru and Gauranga we were lucky to get the nectar service, i.e. to develop the project of the Vedic Planetarium Temple in Ukraine. It happened right after Russian festival “Sadhu-Sanga” where Mataji Varanasi was serving you and helping devotees to spread the information about the project of the Vedic Planetarium and to collect donations for the Temple.

In spite of the difficult political and economic situation in Ukraine as well as the financial difficulties in Zaporozhye Yatra, the president of our temple, Badrinath Prabhu, was enthusiastic about collecting donations for the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium in our city. He announced the launch of this wonderful project in our city and in Ukraine.

We decided to start the development of the project in our city first, and then being an example for other devotees to implement it in other towns and villages of the country. At first we had a feeling that collecting money for the first golden brick of Pancha-tattva will take us an eternity because economic conditions in Ukraine were just deplorable. But Krishna and Srila Prabhupada had a different plan. It is with enthusiasm that devotees start to collect money for the Temple, to fasten the process we suggested collecting the sum for the Pancha-tattva brick till the end of Kartik.

$ 1,600 is big money for our region and the fact that we have gathered half of this sum during Kartik was good news for us. But the devotees were unsatisfied, they said: “How come! We were going to do everything in this favorable month to collect the required sum, and we only have half of it!!!

We tried to reassure them that it is also a good result. But the real miracle happened on the last day of Kartik – our phones were ringing off the hook; all day we were just running around and gathering donations. At the end of the day when we counted the money and saw that we had collected even more than was required for our first gold brick.

Later we got to know that on the last day of Kartik, in the morning, Mataji Varanasi had darshan with His Grace Chaitanya Chandra Charan Prabhu and asked for His blessings to collect the remaining sum as soon as possible…

The day when our first tranche went to Mayapur, Ukrainian financial system was in default. In the morning, all the bank staff was in a panic, but when we came with dollars (which that day no one was selling) and asked to send the sum to the Central Bank of India, bank employees were shocked. When we sent the bank transfer the password for banks was: “Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead! ».

Fundraising of the Nrsimhadeva brick was as well exceptional. Not only the devotees were donating, but also simple people were just coming from nowhere donating big sums of money. On the last day of fundraising the miracle happened again – we received thousands of calls – as if Nrsimhadeva himself was hurrying everybody up! The devotees who don’t visit the programs because of their health, the beginners, and even devotees’ neighbors – everybody was donating. We did not even notice how the sum for the Nrisimhadeva’s brick was collected! We weren’t even surprised when the dollar jumped upright on the day of sending the money to Mayapur. It seemed quite normal to us.

But when we began to collect Lakshmi for Sri Sri Radha Madhava’s brick the economy was just agonizing. Everywhere in Ukraine food disappeared from the store shelves. People swept everything away. There was no salt, no sugar, and no flour. The panic because of military actions came to a head, people fled the cities and at this time the devotees not only from Zaporozhye, but also even from other cities of Ukraine transferred Lakshmi for the altar of Sri Sri Radha Madhava. It was just magical.

However, we couldn’t send the sum for Sri Sri Radha Madhava’s brick. That day there was no Internet in the bank and all the programs didn’t work. We have never seen anything of that kind neither have the bank workers. The operator, who was sending the money by Swift delivery, politely asked us to go home and not to worry. “When everything is adjusted, the payment will be sent”, – he assured. And so it happened. We even were not surprised when the payment “left” in the first minutes of Akshay Tritiya.

The geography of donations collecting started to expand. Devotees from Kharkiv, Kyiv, Mariupol and Dnepropetrovsk joined us. Transcendental stories never ended.

Immediately after the Vyasa Puja of His Grace Chaitanya Chandra Charan Prabhu we received a call from a young man named Marian. He served in the Ukrainian Army and phoned from the hot spot. Once during the “silence”, he visited the website of Alexander Khakimov (HG Chaitanya Chandra Charan Prabhu) and saw a banner of the Vedic Planetarium Temple project. A young soldier, from a small town Chervonograd in western Ukraine, ordered Srila Prabhupada’s books and began to send all his salary for the construction of the Vedic Planetarium Temple. Now Marian is demobilized, he met the devotees from the Lvov city, he is chanting the Maha-mantra and reading Srila Prabhupada’s books. He came to the All-Ukrainian festival “Bhakti Sangama” and was happy in devotees’ company. We were very pleased to meet him, and he thanked us for the opportunity to serve Srila Prabhupada.

Before the All-Ukrainian festival “Bhakti Sangama 2015”, by Srila Prabhupada’s mercy we had the opportunity to meet His Holiness Niranjana Swami and we told him about our service. He gave us His blessing to develop the project of Vedic Planetarium in Ukraine. In the festival, we were distributing cards and leaflets on the construction of the Temple. During the meeting of His Grace Chaitanya Chandra Charan Prabhu disciples on the festival “Bhakti Sangama” we were trying to inspire our brothers and sisters from all cities of Ukraine to participate in the project. Currently, a group of devotees – regional representatives of the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium Project in Ukraine is being organized. We hope so much for your blessings. We pray that all the Ukrainians would learn about the construction of the Vedic Planetarium Temple and our country will be actively involved in collecting donations for this most spectacular temple in the Universe.

Bhakti Sangam Festival 2015

This summer and autumn Mataji Varanasi Devi Dasi accompanied His Grace Chaitanya Chandra Charan Prabhu on His tour in Ural and Siberia, where He presented the Project of the Vedic Planetarium Temple. He is very devoted to your Grace and to the project because he knows that the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium is your heart, life, and soul. As a result, devotees and especially new people treat this project with great enthusiasm and warmth; they support this initiative and believe in it. Especially they are inspired by the fact that this project will be the personification of the Golden Age on our planet, it gives them great hope for the future. When accompanying Guru Maharaj on His tour we noticed a huge wave of interest towards the Vedic tradition, to the transcendental knowledge and its practical application as well as to the Project of the Vedic Planetarium Temple, especially from the part of new people. As a result, during the tour more than 1 million rubles was raised, and the collection of donations continues thanks to devotees who want to perform service in this Project in their own towns. After the tour, almost everyone in this region knows this wonderful project, and Srila Prabhupada’s dream to build this magnificent temple that will spiritualize all the mankind.

In December 2015, the special “Yoga Festival” is planned to be held in Kiev where a magnificent theater performance of “The Creation of the Universe” and the TOVP project will be presented for a few thousands of people.

We are praying for your blessings to continue our service to Srila Prabhupada, our Guru Maharaj, and You, Your Grace Jayapataka Swami, to be able to involve everyone in realizing of the Great Plan of Lord Chaitanya, to flood the Universe with the pure love to God.

Your servants,

Varanasi Devi Dasi,

Gopi Nandini Devi Dasi.

Jayadvaita Swami

With ‘Vanity Karma,’ a Jewish swami comes full circle

This is a story about the big questions, among them: “What profit hath man of all his labour wherein he laboureth under the sun?”

That’s from the beginning book of Ecclesiastes — Kohelet in Hebrew — read in synagogues this Shabbat of Sukkot.

And it also addresses a smaller, easier to answer question, of interest to fewer people, among them those who attended Temple Sinai in Tenafly some 50 plus years ago: Whatever happened to Jay Israel, who used to live in Englewood? Didn’t he run off to join the Hari Krishna? What became of him?

The short answer to the smaller question: Yes, he joined the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. He changed his name to Jayadvaita. He became a Hindu monk, or swami. And this week he published a book, “Vanity Karma,” that looks at Kohelet through the lens of Hindu teachings.

Mukunda Goswami

His Holiness Mukunda Goswami, an ISKCON pioneer, guru, and one of Srila Prabhupada’s very first disciples, has undergone a successful triple-bypass surgery after suffering a heart-attack.

However devotees worldwide are still praying intensely as he prepares to undergo another high risk surgery on his hip tomorrow (Thursday October 29th).

On the night of October 22nd, Mukunda Goswami – respectfully known as Maharaja -- slipped at his residence on the ISKCON New Govardhana Farm in Australia and broke his hip.

As they assessed him for surgery on the hip, doctors at the Tweed Hospital on Australia’s Gold Coast detected an underlying heart condition, and canceled the hip surgery due to the risk of further heart complications.

During the night of October 24th, Maharaja suffered a heart attack, and was transferred to a larger regional hospital. There, he was scheduled for a triple-bypass heart surgery.

Despite his condition he was in good spirits as he awaited surgery. “He was chanting Hare Krishna, listening to recordings of Srila Prabhupada chanting the Holy Names, and his disciples were also reading Srimad-Bhagavatam to him,” reported Nitai Chandra Das.

Nitai Chandra’s father, Krsna Kirtan Das, is caring for Mukunda Goswami and liasing with hospital staff along with Vishnujan Das and Madan Mohan Das.

“We read some messages to Maharaja from Godbrothers and sisters, disciples and wellwishers, and he was pleased to hear them,” added Malini Durr.

The six-hour triple bypass surgery was a success. Afterwards, his heart was beating on its own, which doctors called “the best case scenario” given his pre-surgery condition.

But prayers are needed now more than ever. Maharaja is currently in the Intensive Care Unit, and his orthopedic surgeon plans to operate on his hip tomorrow.

According to the surgeon, as well as the general risks of the operation associated with old age, Mukunda Goswami is especially high-risk due to having just undergone a major surgery on top of his already weak heart.

However, delaying the operation also carries a high mortality risk, as Maharaja’s lungs have begun to rattle because of his long period of immobility in hospital, which increases the chances of pneumonia. So, doctors say, getting him up and moving is extremely important.

More news on the outcome of the operation will come very soon. Of course, visiting will not be allowed until after a substantial recovery time.

“[In the meantime] We now beg all of you to please pray to Srila Prabhupada, Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Lord Nrsimhadeva,” says Krsna Kirtan.

Nimai Agarwal, 16, speaks on a Kids Spirit Panel at the Parliament

Several ISKCON devotees contributed to the Parliament of the World’s Religions – the largest interfaith gathering in the world – this year, with kirtan, japa, and an introduction to the Bhakti philosophy.

The first Parliament was held in 1893 and is recognized as the birth of formal interreligious dialogue worldwide. It wasn’t held again until one hundred years later in 1993, but has been held every five years since then.

This year’s Parliament, which ran from October 15th to 19th at the Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, drew somewhere between eight and ten thousand people from eighty nations and fifty different faiths.  It was so successful that outgoing chairman Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid announced it would be held every two years from now on.

Major speakers included interfaith scholar Dr. Karen Armstrong, professor of contemporary Islamic studies Dr. Tariq Ramadan, United States Ambassador for International Religious FreedomRabbi David Saperstein, and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall.

ISKCON GBC member and Communications Director Anuttama Das, meanwhile, spoke on a panel about Hinduism and Humanitarian Service. As a Vaishnava, he was the only panel member not from an impersonalist school.

“I talked about our Hare Krishna Food Relief programs being the largest vegetarian food relief program in the world, including the Annamrita program in India which feeds 1.2 million children a day,” he says. “I also spoke about our eco farms, like our Govardhana eco-village North of Mumbai, and our hospitals such as Bhaktivedanta Hospital.”

“Finally,” he adds, “I mentioned that ultimately our focus is on the spiritual benefit of all people, and that’s why we published and distributed 512 million books in the last fifty years.”

Devotees chant onstage at the Parliament

Anuttama also participated on a panel about Abuse within Religious and Spiritual Communities. He talked about the need for spiritual leaders to be transparent and accountable, and about what practical steps organizations, communities, members, and leaders can take to ensure healthy social dynamics and interpersonal care.

Other speakers included scholar Radhika Ramana Das (Ravi Gupta), who gave a presention on “Creation and Chaos” according to the Upanishads, and family team Lokadhyaksha Das, Vidarbha Dasi, and their son Nimai from Baltimore, Maryland.

Vidarbha Dasi participated in a panel on Remembering the Divine, with members of different faiths talking about how they remember God in their practice.

“I talked about how our remembrance is mainly based on the chanting of the Holy Name, and recited the first verse of the Siksastakam, which lists the benefits of chanting,” she says. “I mentioned that we must develop the qualities of humility and tolerance to approach this meditation, and that its purpose is to develop a loving relationship with God.”

Other faith representatives on the panel also prioritized chanting the Holy Name of God, with the Sikh representative speaking about chanting Sat Nam, or “True Name,” and the Muslim about chanting the 99 names of Allah.

“It was very nice,” says Vidarbha. “It felt like there was a lot of connection, and that we were all speaking the same language – our meditation processes sounded very similar.”

Vidarbha’s son Nimai, 16, who writes for the interfaith online teen magazine Kids Spirit, also participated, speaking at a Kids Spirit panel. Discussing how religious practice came naturally to him growing up as a Vaishnava, he talked about how his faith was enriched by writing about it in the magazine, and also by bringing it into conversation with other traditions.

A highlight of ISKCON devotees’ contribution to the Parliament was the Bhakti Experience hour from 7 to 8 every morning. It was led by Radhika Ramana on the first day, and by Anuttama, Spanish Fork temple president Charu Das and Lokadhyaksha Das on the following days. It drew between 25 and 50 people every day, and included kirtan and japa meditation, along with readings from Srila Prabhupada’s writings.

“People were very enthusiastic to chant, and asked a lot of deep questions,” says Lokadhyaksa.

Meanwhile Charu and a group of twenty devotees from the Spanish Fork and Salt Lake City temples were invited to sing kirtan in the main hall during lunch hour on Friday. They were joined by three Jewish rabbis, and alternated between chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, and chanting Hebrew names for God. Then on Monday, local band Ananda Groove, a mainstay at the Utah Festival of Colors, performed a Mantra Rock kirtan in the main concourse. On both days, hundreds of people danced and chanted along with the devotees.

“One 85-year old Jewish lady even got out of her wheelchair and was dancing for ten minutes,” says Charu. “I think everybody received the kirtan as an extremely refreshing component of the Parliament.”

Devotee participants felt it was important for ISKCON to have a presence at the Parliament of the World’s Religions, and also for them to see the work of different faith traditions.

“It was nice just to experience and appreciate how God is being worshipped in so many different ways – every tradition seems to have some unique, special richness,” says Vidarbha.
