I apologize for the delay in replying to your kind comments on my story ‘The Man in the Antique Shop’ Thank you very much for the same. :)
Perhaps my writing skills are not up to the mark, which is why the ending was a bit of a puzzle to you.
Allow me to explain the last few lines in the story.
All throughout the story, the narrator talks about and describes the sad, unfortunate Man in the Antique Shop. Actually he is talking about HIMSELF! Yes, his own self. I have tried to keep this fact as a surprise ending for the reader.
You see, when the main character in the story first sees the Man in the Antique Shop, he actually sees his own reflection in an antique mirror that is kept in the display window of the Shop. He is shocked to see how unhappy he (himself) looks. Then he gets the benefit of meeting Govind Das Prabhu and becomes a Devotee, and his whole life changes. Because of taking up Krishna Consciousness, he starts chanting the Mahamantra, leaves all his bad habits and becomes happy and blissful.
After one year when he sees his own reflection again in the mirror in the Shop, he is so pleasantly surprised at how he himself has changed!
He decides to buy the mirror as a souvenir because this mirror had first shown him what a sad, unhappy person he was before. And it was the same mirror which showed him one year later, what a changed joyful man he had become. This is what he means when he agrees with the salesman that the mirror reflects the details of anything in front of it very clearly.
I have tried to convey through my story, that Vaishnava Association can completely change a person’s life, and even his personality and appearance!
Jai Vaishnava Association!
Haribol!
