Foodland manager comments on Annamrita

It was our honour to host Mr. Vikaas Shingal, Business Manager from Radhakrishna Foodland Pvt Ltd. He was kind enough to spare his valuable time to visit our kitchen at Tardeo. He was interested to know all about how the meal was prepared, how the vegetables were stored, and the cleaning of the grains. This was expertly described by our branch manager Mr Prakash.

“I feel blessed after visiting this place. I am very fortunate to witness how food is cooked and distributed for small children in municipal schools! I believe if all of us start contributing to such a noble cause we can very soon make our country proud!” -Mr. Vikaas Shingal, Business Manager, Radhakrishna Foodland Pvt Ltd.

Love You Sister

Love you, sister

Meena packed her school bag quickly. She put in her notebooks and lunchbox. She then neatly braided her hair and washed her face. She put on her shoes and was about to rush out of the door – when her brother Rakesh came in. He was fiddling with the Rakhi on his hand – a plain red and black thread that Meena had tied that day morning. After all, it was raksha bandhan - the day on which sisters’ tie threads on their brothers’ wrists as a symbol of love and protection.

Meena reached out and gave Rakesh a tight hug. “Thank you for the best Rakhi gift!” saying so she ran out of the door. Rakesh watched her go with wistful eyes. His own school bag lay on the bed. But he ignored it and picked up the gunny bag lying beside instead. Sighing, he walked slowly out of the door.

Meena and Rakesh were the children of construction laborers. Their parents could barely afford their education and meals. They had registered Meena and Rakesh in the nearby government school. However, twice a week, they made Meena skip school and go and sort through garbage at the railway station dump. Any recyclable waste she found was sold and helped pay for their meals. Rakesh, being a boy, was allowed to attend school daily.

On Raksha Bandhan, Rakesh told Meena that she could go to school instead of him. He let her have his lunch box and went himself to sort through garbage.

Did you, as a sibling ever have to make such a difficult choice? At Annamrita, we encounter such families daily. Little girls who skip meals so their brothers get to eat. Little boys who miss school to work and feed their sisters. These are the kind of families we are helping. One square meal a day, at school can help them study and make something of their life.

This Raksha Bandhan – donate a portion of your Rakhi gift to Annamrita and experience the true joy of loving and caring.

Homeless but not without shelter

Photo of food distribution to slum children

Slum children in crisis helped out by TISS in association with ISKCON Food Relief Foundation. Annamrita  - ISKCON’s Food Relief Foundation (IFRF) very enthusiastically provided timely nutritious meals to the thousands of families who were affected by the slum demolitions in Maharastra Nagar, behind Mankhurd station. They were invited to collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to help out the slum dwellers.

Over 1737 slum dwellings were demolished in Mankhurd. Six Anganwadis or schools for slum children of Mankhurd were also destroyed in the process. The children were suddenly left homeless and were looking at an uncertain and shaky future. At that time, S. Parasuraman, Director, Tata Institute of Social Sciences contacted Annamrita and asked for emergency meal supplies. Annamrita responded immediately with over thousand plates of delicious, nutritious and hygienic vegetarian lunches. These were distributed daily for a period of twenty days in the nearby masjids, dargahs and Temples of Mankhurd. Annamrita thanks Mr. S. Parasuraman, TISS Director, Ms. Gomti, Coordinator of Rural and urban Transformation, Dr. Vaishali Kole, Ms. Gita and Mr. Sampreet from TISS faculty for giving this opportunity to help.

Annamrita, Newsletter, Issue 3, May 2012

"Lizards and insects emerging out of midday meals will now be a thing of the past for 65,000 children studying in government schools in and around Jamshedpur. Come April 9 and their meals will roll out from delivery vans packed in shining steel utensils containing 'dal, bhat and subzi' cooked in huge semi-automatic steam cookers at a centralized kitchen." -
Times of India, 07 April 2012

Annamrita, in association with Govt. of Jharkhand and Tata Steel, rolled out its new Midday Meal Program in Jharkhand on 8th April, 2012. This will provide the right nutrition to underprivileged children to support their education, in the state of Jharkhand.

The Chief Minister, Sri Arjun Munda, inaugurating the program at Ramdas Bhatta Community Centre at Jharkhand, said that he was highly impressed with the work of Annamrita during his last visit to its Delhi Centre. Ever since, he firmed up his intent to invite Annamrita to Jharkhand State. He took this forward by speaking to Mr. H.M.Nerurkar-- M.D., Tata Steel-- who expressed a keen interest. Thus the foundation stone was laid in July 2011.

Annamrita, having 25 centralized state-of-the-art kitchens across India has set-up a new one now in Jharkhand. The pilot project, first of its kind in the State, is having the capacity to provide hygienic and nutritious food to over 1 Lakh students in and around Jamshedpur and adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan districts.

The scheme will benefit approximately 65,000 children

Until now the food provided under the Midday Meal scheme was not only poor in nutritional value but also prepared in very unhygienic conditions. Children often complained of lizards in dal, insects & cockroaches in rice. It was no surprise that children often fell ill after consuming such food.

Annamrita has pledged to bring smile on the face of each child. Children can now hope to enjoy high quality, delicious & nutritious foods. Annamrita is now introducing khichdi with green vegetables, fried rice, pulav and other delicious meals apart from rice and dal, so that the children will not get bored of eating the same food every day.

Extreme care is being taken to ensure that the food is cooked in hygienic conditions. Huge steel cookers with a capacity to cook 600 liters of dal and vegetables and 100 kg of rice have been installed. Electrical vegetable choppers will automatically cut the vegetables which are directly transferred to the steam cookers after the addition of salt and spices. The cooked food will be parcelled through properly sealed containers to the schools where it will be opened in the presence of school authorities.

Besides 20 highly skilled cooks, Annamrita has employed 16 women to clean the rice provided by the Govt. As many as 44 drivers and helpers from neighboring localities are employed.
The project has created meaningful employment opportunities for many.
