Hayagreeva maddi

This is an important sweet dish offered to Lord Hayagreeva.

Every day, Sri Vâdirâja Tîrtha( Sri Vâdirâja Tîrtha is the second highest saint in the Mâdhva hierarchy, being next only to Srimad Ananda Tîrtha (madhvacharya) would offer a sweet dish called Hayagrîva  maddi(a preparation consisting of jaggery, almonds, ghee and kaDale (lentil) by keeping it in a tray and holding it on his head while seated.

The Sri Hayavadana used to take a form of a white horse, as indicated, and would put his feet at the shoulders of Sri Vâdirâja Tîrtha, eat the sweet, play for some time like a horse, and disappear into the Hayavadana icon. It is said that Sri Vâdiraja Tîrtha would sing the 'Dashâvatâra-stuti', to please the Lord, and the latter Himself would appear and dance when His devotee sang to Him.

 

Ingredients:

 

2 cups bengal gramdal (chana dal)

2 cups jaggery grated

1/4 cup ghee

1/2 cup grated coconut

8-10 raisins

8-10 Cashews made into pcs

1/2 tsp cardamom powder

a pinch of salt

 

Method

 

1. Pressure cook chana dal in 5 cups of water. Drain water.

2. Heat the cooked dal and jaggery till it turns semi dry by stirring continuously.

3. Add grated coconut, salt, ghee and cardamom powder. Mix well.

4. Put off the flame after 2-3 min.

Hayagreeva maddi is ready to be offered.
