250 gms cholar or channa dal1 teaspoon turmeric paste1/4 teaspoon chili paste1 tbls coriander paste2 tbls cumin paste1 tbls garam masala paste4 -8 green chilies, slitSalt to taste1/4 coconut finely grated1 tbls ghee2 teaspoons sugar3 bay leavesand Salt to tasteWash dal and keep aside for half an hour and add to the boiling water in the bowl. Add turmeric and chili paste and stir. Simmer over medium heat till dal is done. Mix well. Add the coriander, cumin and garam masala pastes and green chilies, also add salt and sugar to taste. Mix thoroughly and cook till dal is soft and cooked. In a Karai, heat the ghee, add bay leaves and garam masala. When it stops spluttering, pour into the dal. Add coconut, stir and remove from heat.
