A new Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program launching this fall seeks to help address what many see as a growing need for professionally trained Vaishnava and Hindu chaplains.
While chaplaincy has become an established profession in hospitals, hospices, universities, prisons, and military settings throughout North America, there remain relatively few Hindu chaplains serving in these environments. Within the Vaishnava community, the number of professionally credentialed chaplains is even smaller, creating a need for additional training pathways for devotees interested in spiritual care ministry.
To help meet that need, Rambhoru Dasi, founder of Karuna Care, is launching the HEARTS Online Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program, an ACPE-accredited training initiative designed to prepare aspiring chaplains and spiritual care practitioners. HEARTS stands for Holistic Emotional Awareness, Relational Training and Support (HEARTS). Very soon, HEARTS will change its name to Oxford Center for Hindu Studies [OCHS] Online CPE and will be fully embedded at OCHS as an integral part of its Hindu Chaplaincy Training program.
According to Rambhoru, ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is considered the gold standard of specialized training for chaplains, spiritual care practitioners, and ministry leaders. At its core, CPE follows an action-reflection model of adult learning. Through hands-on spiritual and emotional care experiences in clinical, community, or healthcare environments, students encounter real-life pastoral situations that become opportunities for growth.
These experiences are then explored through small peer groups guided by a certified supervisor, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of themselves, their pastoral identity, and their approach to compassionate care.
