Jagannath Rathayatra Mahotsav by ISKCON Baroda

On Sunday, July 3, 2011,
ISKCON Baroda will be observing the thirtieth annual Jagannath Rathayatra festival here.

The Rathayatra procession will begin at 2:30 PM at the Baroda railway station, as per local tradition.  The Mayor of Baroda, Honorable Doctor Jyotiben Pandya will inaugurate the Rathayatra by sweeping the road in front of the Rath of Their Lordships, just as the Gajapati Maharaj of Puri does annually at Jagannath Puri.

The Collector of Baroda, Sri Vijay Nehera, will be the Chief Guest at the inauguration of the Rathayatra.

The Rathayatra will move through the main streets of Baroda, where thousands of citizens of the town will line the streets to have darshan of Their Lordships Bhagavan Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadradevi.

As per local custom, there will be spontaneous offerings of ghee lamps, sweets, fruits, flowers and flower garlands to Their Lordships throughout the procession.

Various groups will greet the Rathayatra during the procession, at specially arranged mandapas (stages), erected along the Rathayatra route.  The include the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Muslim community at Macchipith, Sri Ashok Chauhan and his followers at Raopura and the Padmavati Shopping center “ekta (unity) committee” at the Sur Sagar
lake in the middle of Baroda town.

Devotees and congregational devotees from ISKCON Baroda, Vallabh Vidyanagar and afar, will engage in both harinam sankirtan and book distribution along the route of the procession.

Also along the entire route of the Rathayatra, halava prasad is distributed to the general pubic from trucks following the Ratha procession.  Annually approximately 10 tons of halava prasad - all cooked in “deshi ghee”, is distributed!

The Rathayatra ends at the Baroda High school, opposite the Polo ground at around 8 PM.  Thereafter, at ISKCON Baroda, prasad is distributed (full meals) to 30,000 visitors.

Senior ISKCON devotees Bhakti Vikas Swami, Deena Bandhu Prabhu, Braja Hari Prabhu (Juhu), Pancharatna Prabhu (Jaipur), Murli Mohan Prabhu (Vijayawada), Surapati Prabhu and Radharanjan Prabhu (Lucknow), and devotees from a number of temples from throughout India will be present at the festival.

Personally, I would like to take this opportunity to invite all the readers of this message to come to Baroda and participate in the Rathayatra festival.  Please do let us know at this e-mail address if you will be attending, so that we can arrange your stay during the festival.

“Suswagatam” to ISKCON Baroda for the thirtieth annual Jagannath Rathayatra festival!

Hope this meets you all well!

Basu Ghosh Das
