“In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the name of Krishna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krishna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons, and confidential companions.” [Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.32]

“SRI DHAMESWAR”

MAHAPRABHU BARI TEMPLE

AT SRI KOLADVIPA ISLAND OF SRI MAYAPUR DHAMA

(NAVADVIPA TOWN)

SRI DHAMESWAR MAHAPRABHU:

The Deity of Lord Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu at Sri Dhameswar Mahaprabhu Temple is very special. This beautiful neem Deity of Gauranga Mahaprabhu is the original Deity that Srimati Visnupriya, wife of Lord Gauranga worshiped for 80 years after Lord Caitanya took sannyasa. Srimati Visnupriya was sixteen years old when Gauranga Mahaprabhu left and she worshiped this Deity as her husband until she passed away at the age of ninety-six. The Deity’s hands reach forward with upraised palms, a pose indicating, “I am yours.” The Deity is called as Sri Dhameswar Mahaprabhu. There are also wooden shoes, which were worn by Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He gave them to Srimati Visnupriya, which she worshipped until she passed away.

After the Lord's acceptance of sannyasa, Srimati Visnupriya always remained within the house, with the exception of taking bath daily at the Ganges along with Mother Sacidevi. When devotees went there to partake of prasadam, they saw only the feet of Visnupriya. Never did they see her face, nor hear her voice. She constantly chanted the holy name.

She would place two fresh earthen pots on either side of her. One pot was empty and the other contained grains of rice. After chanting one round of Japa (108 beads) she placed one grain of rice into the empty pot. She thus continued her Japa until the third quarter of the day. Those grains which she had placed in the empty pot were then cooked and offered to the Lord with tears. Day and night she chanted the holy name:

HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE |
HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE ||

After the departure of Mahaprabhu, their servant, Isana Thakura looked after Mother Saci and Srimati Visnupriya. Vamsivadana Thakura and Mother Saci also stayed with Visnupriya at all times. Once in a dream Lord Caitanya commanded her to shower mercy upon Srinivasa Acarya. Thus with deep affection she placed her feet on the head of Srinivasa. Sri Vamsivadana Thakura, Visnupriya’s dedicated servant and an incarnation of Lord Krishna’s flute, brought this Deity here after she departed. He established the worship of Sri Dhameswar Mahaprabhu as Pranavallabha, the lover of Visnupriya.

Srimati Visnupriya's reaction after hearing of Lord Gauranga's decision to acceptsannyasa, and the words of comfort offered to her by Her husband are recorded in Sri Caitanya Mangala Madhya Lila 12.1-40 by Srila Locana Das Thakura.

In Sri Navadvipa-dhama Mahatmya, Lord Nityananda says, “O Jiva, hear a confidential topic. There is a very beautiful Deity of Gauranga belonging to Visnupriya, which in future will be brought to Sattika by brahmanas descending from the family of Jagannatha Misra. Four hundred years after Lord Gauranga’s appearance in this world, the worship of this Deity will be restored to the highest standard.”

SRI SIKSASTAKAM PRAYERS

by Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu

(1)

ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam
sreyah-kairava-candrika-vitaranam vidya-vadhu-jivanam
anandambudhi-vardhanam´ prati-padam purnamrtasvadanam
sarvatma-snapanam param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam

Let there be all victory for the chanting of the holy name of Lord Krishna, which can cleanse the mirror of the heart and stop the miseries of the blazing fire of material existence. That chanting is the waxing moon that spreads the white lotus of good fortune for all living entities. It is the life and soul of all education. The chanting of the holy name of Krishna expands the blissful ocean of transcendental life. It gives a cooling effect to everyone and enables one to taste full nectar at every step.    [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.12]

namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-saktis
tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah
etadrsi tava krpa bhagavan mamapi
durdaivam idrsam ihajani nanuragah

My Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, in Your holy name there is all good fortune for the living entity, and therefore You have many names, such as "Krishna" and "Govinda," by which You expand Yourself. You have invested all Your potencies in those names, and there are no hard and fast rules for remembering them. My dear Lord, although You bestow such mercy upon the fallen, conditioned souls by liberally teaching Your holy names, I am so unfortunate that I commit offenses while chanting the holy name, and therefore I do not achieve attachment for chanting.   [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.16]

(3)

trnad api su-nicena
taror iva sahisnuna
amanina mana-dena
kirtaniyah sada harih

One who thinks himself lower than the grass, who is more tolerant than a tree, and who does not expect personal honor but is always prepared to give all respect to others can very easily always chant the holy name of the Lord.   [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.21]

(4)

na dhanam na janam na sundarim
kavitam va jagad-isa kamaye
mama janmani janmanisvare
bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi

O Lord of the universe, I do not desire material wealth, materialistic followers, a beautiful wife or fruitive activities described in flowery language. All I want, life after life, is unmotivated devotional service to You.   [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.29]

(5)

ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram
patitam mam vis?ame bhavambudhau
kr?paya tava pada-pankaja-
sthita-dhuli-sadrsam vicintaya

O My Lord, O Krishna, son of Maharaja Nanda, I am Your eternal servant, but because of My own fruitive acts I have fallen into this horrible ocean of nescience. Now please be causelessly merciful to Me. Consider Me a particle of dust at Your lotus feet.   [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.32]

(6)

nayanam galad-asru-dharaya
vadanam gadgada-ruddhaya gira
pulakair nicitam vapuh kada
tava nama-grahane bhavisyati

My dear Lord, when will My eyes be beautified by filling with tears that constantly glide down as I chant Your holy name? When will My voice falter and all the hairs on My body stand erect in transcendental happiness as I chant Your holy name?   [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.36]

(7)

yugayitam nimesena
caksusa pravrsayitam
sunyayitam´ jagat sarvam
govinda-virahena me

My Lord Govinda, because of separation from You, I consider even a moment a great millennium. Tears flow from My eyes like torrents of rain, and I see the entire world as void.   [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.39]

(8)

aslisya va pada-ratam pinastu mam
adarsanan marma-hatam karotu va
yatha tatha va vidadhatu lampato
mat-prana-nathas tu sa eva naparah

Let Krishna tightly embrace this maidservant who has fallen at His lotus feet, or let Him trample Me or break My heart by never being visible to Me. He is a debauchee, after all, and can do whatever He likes, but He is still no one other than the worshipable Lord of My heart.   [--Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila 20.47]
