Question: How to control our mind?
Romapada Swami answers:
In BG 6.35, Krsna addresses Arjuna’s concern of controlling the mind. Krsna mentions that mind can be controlled by practice and detachment. He says that wherever and whenever the mind wanders, due to its flickering and unsteady nature, we must bring it back under the control of the Self (BG 6.26).
As mentioned in this BG verse, our material mind is very flickering and therefore it is attracted to many things and is never satisfied. Therefore one needs to discipline the mind by practice. It is not an overnight process but with steady and determined effort guided by the process of Krsna consciousness it is possible.
Also if we understand the real goal of our life – to develop pure love for Krsna and be engaged in His service and that the real happiness comes from this devotional service and not from material things – then it would be easy to practice detachment, which will in turn help to control our mind from things that are unfavorable for our Krsna consciousness.
The most potent way of practicing mind control in this age, Kali Yuga, is by attentively chanting the holy names of the Lord – the Hare Krishna Maha mantra.
Reading and hearing scriptures regularly, associating with and serving devotees, eating only prasadam and also praying to the Lord for His mercy all greatly help in controlling our mind.
