Lord Jagannath made a joyful journey down Madison Avenue as devotees brought Rath Yatra, kirtan, prasadam, and Srila Prabhupada’s books to the heart of New York City.
The event formed part of the very well-attended 44th India Day Parade, with crowds lining the route as the beautifully decorated Rath cart traveled down Madison Avenue. Brought to New York from North Carolina by Jagat Purusha Das, the cart was one of the day’s most striking sights and stood out as perhaps the most impressive and beautifully decorated float in the parade.
For the devotees, however, the most memorable aspect was not simply the appearance of the Rath cart, but the extraordinary response from the people lining the streets.
As Lord Jagannath passed, members of the public enthusiastically joined the chanting of the holy name. Along the parade route, people danced with their arms raised, chanting with the dozens of devotees accompanying the cart in kirtan. For a few wonderful moments, the distinction between spectators and participants seemed to disappear as Madison Avenue became filled with the sound of the holy name.
