Occasionally, I meet some bold fellow, tall, confident, seasoned, Jewish, who strikes a conversation like the one yesterday.
“I have a friend who was with Rajneesh, but you’re not one of those, right? You’re with Krishna?”
“That’s right!” He went on and on in a most jovial way about India and the Beatles. Then he finished with, “You can attain brahman (salvation). Brahman means spirit. Abraham!” He was trying to tie, linguistically, Hindi and Hebrew together, then left the conversation there, said that it was nice meeting me and carried on walking.
Generally, when I’m alone walking there is more of a tendency for people to come forward to talk. When accompanied with others there is less of a chance to that happening. For instance, today I was with Karuna and Paul. We covered a lot of streets in the downtown. We were definitely immersed in our own dialogue as we meandered through walkways and parks. Paul got quite enthusiastic with his camera.
“At this corner,” I pointed out, “I was on day one of my stay at the ashram, handing out Spiritual Sky incense to people while selling books by our guru, Prabhupada.” That was at the junction of Gerrard and Yonge. I also pointed out the location of our former restaurant on Avenue Road, near Davenport. “It was called ‘Hare Krishna Restaurant.’” In this way the three of us went down what was, to me, called Memory Lane. In the Yorkville area I gestured that in the early 70s the hippies hung out here and that attracted tourists.
