Grammy-nominated devotional musician and longtime ISKCON member Jahnavi Harrison returned to her alma mater this week to receive an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University, marking what she described as a “full circle surreal moment.”
Sharing reflections on social media following the ceremony, Jahnavi recalled that she never attended her original graduation after completing her degree, choosing instead to leave for a music tour. “Many years ago, I missed my graduation to go on tour—jumping from an English degree into suitcases and sound checks,” she wrote. “Somehow that decision symbolised a fork in the road and choosing an unconventional path (especially because I had no plan!)—and I often doubted my choices over the years.”
Founded in 1878 and now serving tens of thousands of students, Middlesex University is a public university based in north London. It awards honorary doctorates to individuals who have made significant contributions in fields such as education, the arts, public service, and social impact. In a statement about the honorary degree, Middlesex University said, “While internationally acclaimed musician, composer and Grammy nominee, Jahnavi Harrison, is recognised for achievements in music. The Middlesex alumna is credited for her role in expanding access to mantra music in the UK and beyond and is an influential advocate for inclusivity, compassion, and cross-cultural understanding.”
