No one has ever said New York City was an easy place for devotees. Of course, the entire material world is a struggle, but the material energy in New York City is certainly amongst the strongest on the planet. The circumstances that were present during Srila Prabhupada’s pastimes are well documented: the homeless and the hippies living in squalor on Skid Row amidst a culture that venerated drugs, sex, and personal pleasure above all else.

Srila Prabhupada’s success as a preacher is exemplified by his transplanting the creeper of bhakti to the West. That began 60 years ago, amid a culture of materialism and disillusionment, through the chanting of Hare Krishna and the establishment of ISKCON. Today, the devotees of ISKCON NYC and the broader New York City yatra want to honor Srila Prabhupada’s legacy by setting a lofty goal for the December book distribution marathon: 60,000 books in a single month.

The December marathon began in 1972 at the Los Angeles temple as an impromptu surge in book distribution for the three days before Christmas. In subsequent years, it has become a month-long event at various ISKCON centers worldwide, with each center making an extra effort to share Srila Prabhupada’s books in December.
