On January 19th, ISKCON Detroit – The Devasadana Mandir hosted the 7th annual Bhagavad Gita Sloka Recitation Competition. This program provides children, ages 4-18, with an opportunity to memorize verses and learn about the philosophy of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is.  Depending on the age group, they were assigned different amounts of verses from the 17th chapter of the Bhagavad-gita. The 17th chapter holds particular importance because it speaks of the types of faith and the effects the three modes of material nature can have on a living entity.

On the day of the competition, the temple hall was filled with guests, and over 50 children participated. Teams consisted of groups of five, three or solo participants. All participants were given certificates, while winners were awarded special prizes for their hard work.

When asked about the competition, participants said that although they were nervous at first, they found the experience to be really fun and will participate next year as well. Parents also appreciated the event, as it provided an opportunity for their children to learn and internalize verses from the Gita.

Please follow ISKCON Detroit on Facebook if you would like to participate in the next competition.
