New Delhi, 23 July — For the fifth consecutive year, ISKCON organized the grand Jagannath Rath Yatra through the Delhi University campus, marking yet another milestone, and the greater one than earlier in bringing the timeless spiritual heritage of Lord Jagannath to one of India’s premier centers of education. The festival witnessed the enthusiastic participation of more than 500 devotees, students, faculty members, university officials, and volunteers, creating an atmosphere of devotion, joy, and cultural celebration. Around a thousand plates of prasādam and around a hundred books by Srila Prabhupada were also distributed during the event, in the largest version of the festival in past five years.
The event was especially enlivened by the presence of Krishna Chaitanya Swami, Head of the ISKCON Kirtan Ministry. His vibrant kirtan and ecstatic dancing inspired participants throughout the procession, filling the university campus with the joyous chanting of the Hare Krishna mahā-mantra.
The Rath Yatra was organized through the combined efforts of Aravindaksha Madhava Das, Director of the ISKCON Delhi University Centre; Dr. Saurabh, Deputy Proctor, University of Delhi; Dr. Sharda and Dr. Pawan of Daulat Ram College; Dr. Prabhanshu of Hansraj College; and Dr. Lalit and Dr. Pawan of Ramjas College, along with numerous dedicated youth volunteers from ISKCON Delhi and Delhi University.
As one of India’s largest and most prestigious universities, Delhi University is home to more than 700,000 students across over 90 affiliated colleges, in addition to its many departments, centers, and faculties.
The festival was attended and warmly supported by several distinguished university dignitaries, including Dr. Rajini Abbi, Director, South Campus; Dr. Vikas Gupta, Registrar; Dr. Rama Sharma, Principal, Hansraj College; Dr. Dinesh Khattar, Principal, Kirori Mal College; Dr. Ajay Arora, Principal, Ramjas College; Dr. Anju Srivastava, Principal, Hindu College; Dr. Gunjan Gupta, Professor-in-Charge, Campus Law Centre; Dr. Bijayalaxmi Nanda, Principal, Miranda House; and Dr. Savita Roy, Principal, Daulat Ram College.
During the procession, the beautifully decorated chariots paused at the entrances of several colleges and faculties. Principals, professors, and senior university officials came forward to welcome Lord Jagannath by reverentially offering ārati and receiving mahā-prasādam, expressing heartfelt respect for this sacred tradition. Their participation reflected the deep cultural significance of the festival and its ability to bring together people from diverse academic and social backgrounds.
The festival also showcased the enthusiastic service of student volunteers from ETHICRAFT, ISKCON’s student outreach initiative. Wearing society-branded T-shirts, they actively participated in pulling the chariots, assisting with crowd management, distributing prasādam, and rendering various services throughout the event. Their dedication demonstrated how spiritual values can inspire leadership, teamwork, and selfless service among young people.
More than a religious procession, the Rath Yatra served as a celebration of India’s living spiritual heritage within one of its foremost educational institutions. It stood as a remarkable example of collaboration between the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and the University of Delhi, united by a shared commitment to nurturing responsible, compassionate, and value-based citizens.
As the melodious chanting of the holy names echoed through the campus and hundreds joined in singing, dancing, and pulling the chariots, the festival transformed the university into a vibrant celebration of devotion, culture, and community. Such initiatives inspire students to engage with ISKCON’s educational and outreach activities while fostering a deeper appreciation for India’s timeless spiritual wisdom.
