The Bhaktivedanta Research Center has taken a significant step toward fulfilling Srila Prabhupada’s vision of presenting Gaudiya Vaishnava wisdom to the global academic community with the inauguration of the Satellite Center of the Bhaktivedanta International Center of Excellence for Chaitanya Vaishnava Studies (BICECVS). The inaugural program was held on July 22, 2026, at the Bhaktivedanta Research Center in collaboration with the Department of Sanskrit, University of Calcutta.
A Vision Fifty Years in the Making
The milestone resonates deeply with a conversation Srila Prabhupada had in Hyderabad on August 19, 1976, in which the possibility of academic collaboration with the University of Calcutta was first raised. Acyutananda informed Prabhupada that a newspaper report described the pro-vice-chancellor of Calcutta University visiting Mayapur with interest in affiliating it with the university. Prabhupada’s reply was brief but telling: “It is not yet finished?”
Nearly fifty years later, the inauguration of the BICECVS Satellite Center in partnership with the University of Calcutta stands as a meaningful step toward realizing that long-held aspiration—a vision whose fulfillment, in a sense, Prabhupada had been quietly pressing for even then.
