Bhagawad Gita on trial gathers online support

CHANDIGARH: As the Bhagawad Gita awaits trial by a Russian court on charges of religious extremism, followers of the holy scripture are busy gaining support online against the imposition of a ban. Over 29,000 people across the globe have signed the online petition with Mumbai, recording the highest number of signatures so far. It has recorded almost 2,800 signatures, followed by Pune and Moscow with over 1,370 and 900 signatures respectively. Chandigarh, too, has recorded 127 signatures.

Nand Maharaj Das, co-president of ISKCON Chandigarh, said, "Bhagawad Gita is non-sectarian. By imposing a ban on the book people will be deprived of great wisdom and literature. We have signed the online petition against banning of the book. Many of our followers have contributed to the petition and we expect more people to join in."

Suresh Das, a resident of Sector 44, said, "Bhagawad Gita does not mention the word "Hindu" anywhere in it. It is not limited to a particular religion. A ban on the book is not justified."
