Recently, West Bengal Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Agnimitra Paul visited ISKCON Mayapur to meet senior officials and temple representatives to discuss a proposed plan to upgrade facilities at Sri Mayapur Dhama and its surroundings.

Scope of the Proposal

The minister said the project would cover roughly 700 to 800 acres surrounding the temple, together with the nearby township. The size suggests an effort to reshape the entire Dhama and its neighborhood, rather than a handful of separate civic works.

The meeting drew a broad group of stakeholders, including the Nabadwip legislator, Nadia’s district magistrate and additional district magistrate, Nitin Singhania, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), Supriya Adhikari, the department’s joint secretary, senior engineers from the Municipal Engineering Directorate, and ISKCON representatives.

Describing her vision, Agnimitra Paul pointed to projects already under way in Kolkata. “Our idea is to develop Mayapur on the lines of the ongoing makeover of College Street, in line with the Oxford Street and Tangra area as Chinatown. Mayapur attracts tourists not only from within the state but also from abroad,” she said.

According to the minister, the government will bring in well-known planners and architects from around the country to draft the blueprint. The plan is expected to address road networks, drainage, visitor transportation, garbage disposal, street lighting, and other modern facilities for pilgrims and tourists. Together, these elements cover the everyday systems a pilgrimage town relies on, from how visitors arrive and move about to how the area is kept clean, lit and safe.
