On July 7, 2024, the city of Kolkata witnessed a historic moment with the inauguration of the Bhaktivedanta Sarovar, previously known as Victoria Square Park. This significant event coincided with the annual ISKCON Kolkata Ratha Yatra festival, marking a monumental day for the ISKCON community and the city’s residents alike. The inauguration of this park represents the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream of Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, to create a serene and spiritually uplifting space in the heart of Kolkata.

The vision for Bhaktivedanta Sarovar, spanning over four acres with a lake covering 2.5 acres, is not just a park but a spiritual oasis speaking to the enduring legacy of Srila Prabhupada and the tireless efforts of the ISKCON Kolkata community. “This park will be unique because it offers a space where people can unwind from the stresses of life and find solace in a spiritually enriching environment,” said Radharaman, the Vice-Temple President of ISKCON Kolkata, during a recent interview with ISKCON News.

The journey to this momentous day has been fraught with challenges, delays, and bureaucratic hurdles. However, the perseverance and dedication of the ISKCON community have paid off. “Initially, the delay was due to various governmental processes, but finally, it happened,” Radharaman recounted. He further explained that the government had granted permission to develop the park, even allowing for innovative additions like boat rides featuring the community’s beloved Radha Govindji deities, creating a serene cultural and spiritual retreat in the bustling city.

The grand inauguration ceremony was attended by notable guests, including the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee<, who has supported several of ISKCON’s initiatives. “For the last 13-14 years, she has celebrated Srila Prabhupada – ‘the beloved son of Kolkata,’ and the West Bengal government has been instrumental in supporting our efforts,” said Radharaman. Despite the torrential rain on the day of the inauguration, the Chief Minister, members of the Kolkata community, and ISKCON devotees proceeded with the ceremony, showcasing their firm commitment.
