Each year, the city of Kolkata is surrounded by an atmosphere of devotion as the grand chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, organized by ISKCON Kolkata, unfolds. The majestic procession of Lord Jagannath, accompanied by Lord Baladeva and Subhadra Maharani, moved through the city streets, attracting thousands of devotees who gathered to witness and participate in the chariot festival.

The roots of this grand celebration go back to 1972, when ISKCON held its first Rathayatra in India, just two years after the founding of ISKCON Kolkata—the country’s first center. That inaugural procession was personally guided by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who in a letter in 1972,  emphasized: “Have Rathayatra very gorgeously, and preach the importance of the Yatra throughout Calcutta. Thousands should come and take part.”

This year’s festival began with a grand inauguration ceremony attended by the Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal, who formally flagged off the chariot procession in the presence of senior government officials, spiritual leaders, and thousands of devotees. Jayapataka Swami also graced the occasion with his presence, offering heartfelt prayers and blessings. His presence was significant as he has been a guiding force behind the growth of ISKCON Kolkata and its Rathayatra since its inception.
