Balaram-jayanti

Lord Balarama is elder brother of Lord Krishna. Balaram jayanti is celebrations of his appearance day or birthday in the month of Sravan (August – September). It is celebrated on the full moon day (poornima) of Sravan month. In 2011, Balaram jayanti is on 13th August.

About Lord Balaram

Srimad Bhagavatam describes the pastimes of Lord Krsihna and Balaram in the tenth canto. There was a evil king by the name Kamsa. He had a sister by name Devaki who was married to Vasudev. During her marriage farewell a voice in sky declared that one of Devaki’s son will kill Kamsa. He killed her six children immediately after their birth. The seventh child disappeared miraculously. He was transferred to womb of Rohini. The child was called as Rama. But due to extraordinary strength of the child he was renamed as Balarama. He was also called Baladeva or Balabhadra. The eighth child was Lord Krishna who eventually killed Kamsa.

The pastime of Krishna and Balaram are one of the most cherished subjects in Srimad Bhagavatam. Balaram spends his childhood as a cowherd boy, playing with Krishna and other Gopas. During that He assists Krishna in killing several demons and He Himself kills Dhenakasura. His weapon is described as ploughshare or Hal (in Hindi). Thus He is also called Haladhar. Vaishanavas celebrate Balaram jayanti with great enthusiasm. They consider Lord Balaram as the bestower of strength for devotional service. Vedic scriptures describe that Lord Balaram is the first expansion of Lord Krishna. He is also known as Adi-Guru, the original spiritual master.
