Gopiparanadhana Prabhu by Indradyumna Swami

Dear Gopiparanadhana Prabhu,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

It was with great sadness that I learned yesterday of your sudden departure from this world. Just weeks ago we were together on the festival tour in Poland. I considered it special mercy that you had joined us and that we could have your extended association for some time. As always, I listened in amazement to your deep and philosophical morning Bhagavatam classes, and marveled at how you touched the hearts of so many conditioned souls with your preaching at the evening festivals. Long ago I concluded that of all my godbrothers you gave the best discourses on the scriptures. I could listen to you for hours! Whenever I visited Vrindavan I would ask your son, Gaura Mohan dasa, to give me recordings of all the classes you had given throughout the year. I will greatly miss your preaching which gave me deep inspiration to spread the glories of the Holy Names far and wide.

Your contribution as a scholar in ISKCON was unmatched. Your translations and commentaries to the Brhad Bhagavatamrta and Krsna Lila Stava revealed the deep teachings of Srila Sanatana Goswami in a very clear and understandable way. Krsna consciousness makes sense and is real because our perfect philosophy comes directly from the Supreme Lord Himself. You mastered that philosophy and had a unique ability to present it to others. Yet despite your astute learning and your tremendous contribution to the Vaisnava literary world, you remained a genuine humble soul. I learned a lot about humility from you. I never once heard you speak about your own achievements, and when others did you would quickly change the subject.

You had such a command of the philosophy that I once told you I felt you were unconquerable, that no one could defeat you in a debate. Now death has conquered your body, but most certainly not your soul. Guided by our spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, you have gone on to serve elsewhere in this material world or you have gone back to Godhead by his grace. The fact that you departed this world at the foot of Govardhana Hill makes me think you have achieved the eternal service of Giri-Govardhana in the spiritual sky.

I feel very lonely today. Several times I have hidden myself from the devotees and cried. It is rare to meet such an exceptional soul as you. Often we only appreciate someone in full after they leave, but I fully appreciated you from the first day I met you. I feel very fortunate to have been a recipient of your mercy, and I will continue to listen to your discourses until the day I myself leave this world. I don’t know if I’ll be fortunate enough to die in Sri Vrindavan Dhama, but even if I don’t I feel I can still reach the supreme abode by following in the footsteps of illustrious godbrothers like you who so expertly serve the mission of our spiritual master in this world.

As you were leaving the Polish festival tour a few weeks ago, you vowed you’d return again. Of course it’s not possible now, but my humble prayer is that we’ll serve together again, perhaps in some future life or best of all eternally at the foot of Govardhana Hill in the spiritual sky, far beyond this temporary world of birth and death.

I trust you will receive this letter through the transcendental medium of our spiritual preceptors, who always watch over and protect us.

Your servant,

Indradyumna Swami

I first met Gopiparanadhana Prabhu in 1979 in LA. We spent time together here in Bangalore from 1981-83 while he was working on the translation of the rest of the Bhagavatam. Over the years we had a nice friendship. He didn’t have a mean bone in his whole body and was incapable of offending any one; he had such humility and kindness in him.

Ironically today my wife and I had lunch at a devotee friend’s house. We had recommended that they read the Brhad Bhagavatamrta translated by Gopiparanadhana. Srila Prabhupada had said that if you want to understand what real Bhakti yoga is you must read BB. Just by reciting from memory whatever we could remember of the BB our hosts were so moved that tears were coming down their cheeks because of the wonderful descriptions of Lord Krsna’s dealings with His devotees contained in that book. Especially moving was how Krsna said to Gopa Kumar after he returned back to godhead in Goloka: “I have been looking at that path every day and wondering when will you show your mercy onto Me and come back to Me, and now you have returned to Me.”

Lord Krsna is so humble that He is waiting for us to show our “mercy” on Him. There was no dry eye in the room. So in this way for at least 1-2 hours we were glorifying the BB and Gopiparanadhana Prabhu for translating it. Just then I got the SMS message that Gopiparanadhana Prabhu had left his body and could not believe that the person who I had been glorifying had just died. All I can think is that now Lord Krsna’s wait for His dear friend Gopiparanadhana Prabhu to come back to Him is now over.

Another Honorable Spiritual Son of Srila Prabhupada is no longer among us.

There is reciprocal love between Srila Prabhupada's disciples and their eternal spiritual father. This love is demonstrated in various ways. In one case it is demonstrated with service to Srila Prabhupada until the last day. By constantly preaching, mentoring, writing all the while maintaining sadhana and renunciation. Such is the  love of Gopiparanadhana Prabhu.

There is sometimes a misconception that a bunch of hippies joined Srila Prabhupada in the 60's and 70's and it was just the "right time" for "alternative religions". However this is not the case. These devotees were sent to help Srila Prabhupada and their course and departure are part of that "lila". In Gopi Prabhu's case he was a scholar. Not just someone that could preach or repeat but a genuine scholar of sanskit and vedic texts. These are the type of bright, dedicated and selfless devotees sent to assist Srila Prabhupada in establishing ISKCON and making it flourish.

Today Gopi Prabhu has departed his earthly pastimes. It serves as a reminder that we need to serve, value and learn all that we can from the honorable sons of Srila Prabhupada before it is too late to get their association. It also serves to remind all Godbrothers and Sisters that Srila Prabhupada has done so much for us and although we cannot all be scholars or as dedicated and renounced as Gopi Prabhu, now in our final years it is time to step up and do what we can to serve.

Hare Krishna Gopiparanadhana Prabhu.

I was shocked to learn this morning that my old friend and colleague Gopiparanadhana Prabhu had left his body suddenly at Govardhana. Just a few days ago I sent him a chapter of his Laghu-bhagavatamrta translation I had been reviewing — and now he’s gone. What a loss for our Society and the world! He was a pure and vastly learned Vaisnava who impressed everyone with his firm faith in and loyalty to Srila Prabhupada and his movement, his genuine humility, his warm and open personality, and his deep realization of the intricacies of bhakti. Though we mourn his departure, we rejoice at the auspicious circumstances of his passing — at the foot of Govardhana Hill chanting japa.

Gopiparanadhana Prabhu (or “Gopi,” as he was known to his close friends) joined the famous Henry St. temple in Brooklyn in 1973, the same year I did. We came from a similar background — New York Jewish intellectual. We even both played the recorder, a simple renaissance-era flute. (In fact, we used to occasionally play duets in Miami during slow times in the production of the Bhagavatam.) Of course, he was a real scholar, with a degree in linguistics from Columbia, while I wasn’t. But still, we both began serving in Srila Prabhupada’s Bhaktivedanta Book Trust the year we joined, and have done so for nearly 40 years since.

My main close association with Gopi was during the 6 years from 1983-89 in Miami, when we worked with Hridayananda das Goswami on the completion of Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavatam. Gopi really did tremendous work on that project, translating the verses and commentaries for most of the 10th, 11th, and 12th cantos, text that formed the basis for Maharaj to do his translations and purports. In fact, in 1989 Maharaj was not able to participate in producing the final 10 chapters of the Tenth Canto — the final canto in our production line — and Gopi did those all himself. Read the 87th chapter, the Prayers of the Personified Vedas, to get a further view of his brilliance, which he showed in distilling the purports from the extensive commentaries of the acaryas.

Over the years since Miami I’ve only occasionally had Gopi’s personal association, but I’ve followed his career from afar, appreciating his wonderful development of the Sanskrit school at Govardhana, his superb translation with commentary of the Brhad-bhagavatamrta, and his preaching in China and other places. And, whenever I had questions on the Sanskrit in Prabhupada’s books or other books, he was always there at the other end of the email. Hopefully his two main books that are nearing publication – Srila Jiva Gosvami’s Tattva-sandarbha and Srila Rupa Goswami’s Laghu-bhagavatamrta — can soon be brought out posthumously.

Gopi, you will be sorely missed by thousands, including your old friend,
Dravida Dasa

My dear godbrother Gopipranadana Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Let start by offering my obeisances to him. Srila Prabhupada said that living and dying in the dham is the same. He left from Govardhan and went back to Spiritual world. His destination is auspicious. Of this we can rejoice. At the same time loosing him suddenly like this leaves us in separation and is a big lost. My last meeting with him was in the month of April 2011 at Vrinda Kunda. We had a long chat together. HG Gopipranadana Prabhu was one of a few accomplished devotees in sanskrit and dedicated himself for translating books that Srila Prabhupad had indicated for translation.

He was one of the lead member of the team that completed Srimad Bhagavatam that was so dear to Srila Prabhupada. He also translated Brihad Bhagavatamrta with purports. I dont know what other books he had in the pipeline. He was also training up other devotees in sanskrit to carry out this important service. One time he was contemplating moving to Mayapur but his heart was still in Govardhan. His classes were very scholarly and to the point. His association was mature and refreshing. Recently i passed through Hong Kong and met a chinese devotee who had taken initiation from him. How expansive his preaching was, i have only a glimpse.

I want to offer pushpanjali flowers at his lotus feet during this auspicious occassion of smrti sabha. There are many more advance devotees who probably have much more to say. This time our hearts reach up to his wife and child who are left behind to carry out his great legacy. I take this opportunity to offer sraddhanjali. All glories to HG Gopipranadana Prabhu! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Your Servant,

Jayapataka Swami

Bhakti Madhurya Govinda Goswami gave a lecture on the wonderful Vaishnava qualities of Gopipranadhana Prabhu during the Srimad Bhagavatam class in Bhaktivedanta Cultural Center (BCC), Prai.

Maharaja explained how even though HG Gopipranadhana Prabhu was the most super-excellent scholar, he was the most humble person, always ready to offer ALL respects to every devotee and NOT expecting and honor from anyone. These are just some of his wonderful Vaishnava character.

Maharaja lamented how, ISKCON had lost a great Vaisnava scholar and a devotee. Many scholar came come in future but will they have the same humility and sublime character as HG Gopipranadhana Prabhu Maharaja wondered.

“Gopi”? (Gopiparanadhana prabhu). Oh, no! Surely there is some terrible mistake! Not Gopi! Oh no; surely it is just a nasty, irresponsible rumor—that Gopi has left us! But no; only about an hour after receiving this terrible news, it is confirmed. Gopi has left us! Oh Radhe! Oh Krishna! Oh, why? Why do you take away such a sweet and valuable devotee from our association? Oh why?

In these ways Maharaja described many wonderful qualities of Gopipranadhana Prabhu

Later at noon, we had prasadam offering to the picture of Gopipranadhana Prabhu, puspanjali and Guru puja. Siva Caitanya dasa lead a ecstatic kirtana in glorification of Gopipranadhana Prabhu.

Just now returned at 7:00 PM from the funeral ceremony of our beloved Godbrother Sriman Gopiparanadhana Prabhu at Govardhana. They bade his body at about 3:00 PM; offered bhoga and arati to him and with the kirtan procession carried his body on the Govardhana Parikrama marg, passed by Manasi Ganga, to the cremation place. Many local residents, especially in the first beginning stretch, were stepping out of their shop or home and offering their humble respect to him.

At the cremation place they laid down his body on cow dung patties, of course from the cows of Vraja. They put more patties on the side and the top until his body was fully covered. His teenage son was the first one to light the funeral fire. After that I also lit the fire and many others did this.

The cool and gentle breeze was flowing from the Kusum Sarovar's side which was helping in fanning the fire. While kirtan was going on we started circumambulating the fire. Suddenly it started to rain gently, which was amazing and auspicious.

There were about 100 devotees, Prabhus and Matajis, in attendance. Several senior devotees were present, like Sruta Kirti Prabhu, Panca Gaura Prabhu, Kratu Prabhu, Radha Raman Swami, Janardana Prabhu, etc. Devotees traveled from nearby places, especially from New Delhi.

In the past Gopiparanadhana Prabhu had disclosed his will in person to his wife that his ashes to be put in Samadhi at the foothill of Govardhana, across the ISKCON Bhaktivedanta Ashram Govardhana project, next to Padmalochan Prabhu's Puspa Samadhi.

Tomorrow morning, 16th September, at 8:00 AM his remembrance and glorification has been scheduled in Krishna Balarama temple in Vrindavan. Anyone who would like to share their memories/glories of Gopiparanadhana Prabhu could send it to my email account: lokanath.swami@pamho.net

Whatever will arrive by that time, we will share that with the assembled devotees.

There will be a feast in honor of Gopiparanadhana Prabhu. Gopal Krishna Maharaja has offered to sponsor the feast.

His Grace Gopiparanadhana Prabhu Ki Jaya.

Your servant,

Lokanath Swami

Gopiparanadhana prabhu by Kirtiraja Prabhu

I remember Gopiparanadhana prabhu from when he moved into the Henry Street, Brooklyn Temple.

From the beginning he was sober, serious, focused and a very nice devotee.

He made many lasting contributions to Srila Prabhupada's mission and he will not be forgotten.

Gopiparanadhana prabhu by Srutakirti Prabhu

I just received the most disturbing news that our Godbrother, Gopiparanadhana prabhu left his body a few hours ago here in Govardhan. I don't know anything else but am headed over there now and will meet Pancagauda prabhu and others. I will report more as soon as I knowаа I've just returned from his house, which is next door to Iskcon Govardhan Mandir. I will give a short report here and in the comment below as told by his wife. He was seen early in the morning and was 'fine'. One devotee was waiting for an hour to see him. When he finally got in his place he found him lying on the floor and probably been there for a few hours. His wife told me that he had just returned from the Polish festival and in two days he was going to China. Krsna arranged for him to leave his body here, at his home in Govardhan. She told me yesterday a black snake came up to the door and Gopi simply closed the door on it. She sees it as Krsna’s messenger. It certainly could have been an asthma attack but no analysis has been done yet as the police hadn’t yet arrived.

His body was almost straight on the floor of his room. He was lying on his back and would be in a dandavat position with his left side facing Govardhan Hill. I was his first Godbrother in the room and after a few minutes chanted Nrsingha prayers. Looking around his small room I saw the following on his desk. A framed picture with the following words:

“Do not hear from mouths of persons lacking proper conduct. If your conduct is below par you should not publicly preach about the Lord. Close the door and preach to yourself. Bhajan really begins when one’s outside and inside are the same.”

Also on his desk was a large copy of Upanisadbhasyam and two books in Chinese, at least one of them was a Chinese/English Dictionary.

Sri Radhastami
A Talk by Giriraj Swami
August 30, 2009
San Diego
For the most auspicious celebration of Sri Radhastami, we shall read from Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto Two, Chapter Three: “Pure Devotional Service.”
TEXT 23
jivan chavo bhagavatanghri-renum
na jatu martyo 'bhilabheta yas tu
sri-visnu-padya manujas tulasyah
svasan chavo yas tu na veda gandham

TRANSLATION
The person who has not at any time received the dust of the feet of the Lord's pure devotee upon his head is certainly a dead body. And the person who has never experienced the aroma of the tulasi leaves from the lotus feet of the Lord is also a dead body, although breathing.
PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada
According to Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, the breathing dead body is a ghost. When a man dies, he is called dead, but when he again appears in a subtle form not visible to our present vision and yet acts, such a dead body is called a ghost. Ghosts are always very bad elements, always creating a fearful situation for others. Similarly, the ghostlike nondevotees who have no respect for the pure devotees, nor for the Visnu Deity in the temples, create a fearful situation for the devotees at all times. The Lord never accepts any offerings by such impure ghosts. There is a common saying that one should first love the dog of the beloved before one shows any loving sentiments for the beloved. The stage of pure devotion is attained by sincerely serving a pure devotee of the Lord. The first condition of devotional service to the Lord is therefore to be a servant of a pure devotee, and this condition is fulfilled by the statement “reception of the dust of the lotus feet of a pure devotee who has also served another pure devotee.” That is the way of pure disciplic succession, or devotional parampara.
Maharaja Rahugana inquired from the great saint Jada Bharata as to how he had attained such a liberated stage of a paramahamsa, and in answer the great saint replied as follows (Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.12.12):

rahuganaitat tapasa na yati
na cejyaya nirvapanad grhad va
na cchandasa naiva jalagni-suryair
vina mahat-pada-rajo-'bhisekam

“O King Rahugana, the perfectional stage of devotional service, or the paramahamsa stage of life, cannot be attained unless one is blessed by the dust of the feet of great devotees. It is never attained by tapasya (austerity), the Vedic worshiping process, acceptance of the renounced order of life, the discharge of the duties of household life, the chanting of the Vedic hymns, or the performance of penances in the hot sun, within cold water, or before the blazing fire.”
In other words, Lord Sri Krsna is the property of His pure unconditional devotees, and as such only the devotees can deliver Krsna to another devotee; Krsna is never obtainable directly. Lord Caitanya therefore designated Himself as gopi-bhartuh pada-kamalayor dasa-dasanudasah (Cc Madhya 13.80), or “the most obedient servant of the servants of the Lord, who maintains the gopi damsels at Vrndavana.” A pure devotee therefore never approaches the Lord directly, but tries to please the servant of the Lord's servants, and thus the Lord becomes pleased, and only then can the devotee relish the taste of the tulasi leaves stuck to His lotus feet. In the Brahma-samhita it is said that the Lord is never to be found by becoming a great scholar of the Vedic literatures, but He is very easily approachable through His pure devotee. In Vrndavana all the pure devotees pray for the mercy of Srimati Radharani, the pleasure potency of Lord Krsna. Srimati Radharani is a tenderhearted feminine counterpart of the supreme whole,
resembling the perfectional stage of the worldly feminine nature. Therefore, the mercy of Radharani is available very readily to the sincere devotees, and once She recommends such a devotee to Lord Krsna, the Lord at once accepts the devotee's admittance into His association. The conclusion is, therefore, that one should be more serious about seeking the mercy of the devotee than that of the Lord directly, and by one's doing so (by the good will of the devotee) the natural attraction for the service of the Lord will be revived.
COMMENT by Giriraj Swami
This verse and purport are so deep. Practically the whole philosophy of Krsna consciousness is contained in the purport, and one could discuss it for many hours and days. Still, we shall try to say something within the time available to us.
The first point--the most basic point--is that the living entity is not the body. The living entity is the soul within the body. The living entity in the material body has material desires for sense gratification and more subtle material desires that express themselves in mental speculation. Some unfortunate living entities after leaving the body end up as ghosts, in subtle, ghostly bodies, but they still have gross desires.
How does someone become a ghost? A typical way is that a living entity who is full of material desires becomes so frustrated and disappointed (which everyone is to some extent) that he commits suicide. The result is that he gets a ghost body, a subtle body without a gross body. Krsna, the Supersoul, fulfills all desires. The person who commits suicide wants to be free from his gross body, so Krsna fulfills his desire and gives him a ghost body, a subtle body. But the frustration and disappointment that gave rise to the impulse to commit suicide in the first place came from strong material desires. So he still has the material desires but not a gross body through which to fulfill them. So he is even more frustrated. And so the ghost will try to inhabit, or possess, someone else's gross body in order to fulfill his desires through that person's body, or senses. Thus ghosts are disturbing elements. They create fearful situations.
Another way a person can get the body of a ghost is if he is very attached, for example, to his house and at the time of death he thinks of his house. Yam yam vapi smaran bhavam tyajaty ante kalevaram/ tam tam evaiti kaunteya sada tad-bhava-bhavitah: “Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, that state he will attain without fail.” (Bg 8.6) Whatever you think at the time of death will determine your next body. Now, if you think of your mansion at the time of death, you can't get the body of a mansion, because that is not one of the species of life, but you can take birth as a ghost in that mansion. Therefore many big mansions--castles--are reputed to be haunted by ghosts.
How to be freed from ghosts? The chanting of the holy name is the best remedy for practically any ill in the world, and it is the remedy for being troubled by ghosts. Sometimes devotees take advantage of this fact. A large estate will be haunted and so people won't want to buy it, but the devotees will see, “Oh, here is a good opportunity. We can get a major property to use in Krsna's service for only a small sum of money, and as for the ghosts, we'll just do hari-nama-sankirtana and the ghosts will go away and we will have a nice place for Krsna.”
In the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu Srila Rupa Gosvami has composed a beautiful verse in which he says that one who is haunted by material desires can never experience the sweet taste of devotional service.
bhukti-mukti-sprha yavat
pisaci hrdi vartate
tavad bhakti-sukhasyatra
katham abhyudayo bhavet
“The material desire to enjoy the material world and the desire to become liberated from material bondage are considered to be two witches, and they haunt one like ghosts. As long as these witches remain within the heart, how can one feel transcendental bliss? As long as these two witches remain in the heart, there is no possibility of enjoying the transcendental bliss of devotional service.” (Brs 1.2.22) Pisaci means “ghost” or “witch.” Material desires are like ghosts that fill our minds with ideas foreign to us. In our
normal consciousness we think in a certain way, but when a ghost possesses our mind, we think in a completely different way. As spirit souls we are all originally Krsna conscious, by constitution eternal servants of Krsna (jivera 'svarupa' haya-krsnera 'nitya-dasa'). So to desire anything other than to be a servant of Krsna or a servant of a servant of Krsna is like being haunted by a ghost. We get desires, ideas, for sense gratification, and instead of accepting Krsna as the supreme enjoyer, which is His
constitutional position, we want to take His place and enjoy independent of Him. Such desires, such ideas are foreign to our true nature. So being possessed by these desires is like being haunted by a ghost.
Everyone in the material world is in a fearful position, and everyone needs shelter. Once, someone asked Srila Prabhupada, “What do you personally feel when you chant?” And Srila Prabhupada replied, “I feel no fear.” Every conditioned soul is fearful. If we think about it, we are always afraid. We can't even count all the things we are afraid of all the time. The Bhagavatam (11.2.37) says that fear arises from thinking of things as separate from Krsna.
bhayam dvitiyabhinivesatah syad
isad apetasya viparyayo 'smrtih
tan-mayayato budha abhajet tam
bhaktyaikayesam guru-devatatma
“Fear arises when a living entity misidentifies himself as the material body because of absorption in the external, illusory energy of the Lord. When the living entity thus turns away from the Supreme Lord, he also forgets his own constitutional position as a servant of the Lord. This bewildering, fearful condition is effected by the potency for illusion, called maya. Therefore, an intelligent person should engage unflinchingly in the unalloyed devotional service of the Lord, under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual
master, whom he should accept as his worshipable deity and as his very life and soul.” If we recognize that everything is related to Krsna and that Krsna is the supreme enjoyer, the supreme proprietor, and our best friend, we won't be afraid. We'll feel peaceful.
We need shelter, and we can get the shelter we need only from Krsna. But we cannot get Krsna's shelter directly. We have no way to approach Him directly. Therefore all scriptures and bona fide acaryas recommend that to achieve the shelter of Krsna we should seek the shelter of a pure devotee who himself has achieved the shelter of another pure devotee who has achieved the shelter of another pure devotee--all the way back to Krsna. This is devotional parampara.
mahatmanas tu mam partha
daivim prakrtim asritah
bhajanty ananya-manaso
jnatva bhutadim avyayam
“Those who are not deluded, the great souls, are under the protection of the divine nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, original and inexhaustible.” (Bg 9.13) The great souls are not under the material energy. They are under the divine energy, the spiritual energy. And they achieve the shelter of the spiritual energy by taking shelter of a pure devotee who is under the spiritual energy, who in turn has taken shelter of a pure devotee under the spiritual energy, and so on back to Krsna.
Once, Srila Prabhupada was invited to speak at the home of the wealthiest family in India then, the Birlas. I presented Mrs. Birla a list of topics on which Srila Prabhupada could speak (I knew he could speak on any topic), and she chose “How to be Successful.” The invitees would be people we imagined were very successful, but her choice suggested that they wanted to become more successful--that they were not satisfied as they were. Thus they would want to learn the secret of how to become more successful.
At the program, Srila Prabhupada gave a very interesting definition of success, one that we did not anticipate. He explained that everyone in the material world is under the control of the material energy, personified as Durga, who rides on her lion carrier and exhibits many arms with many weapons. He said that Durga holds a trident (trisula), which represents the threefold miseries of material existence and is always piercing the conditioned souls with these miseries. And opposed to the material energy is
the spiritual energy, personified as Srimati Radharani. Srila Prabhupada said that success in life means to transfer oneself from the control of Durgadevi, the material energy, to the shelter of Radharani, the spiritual energy. Of course, Durgadevi herself is serving Lord Krsna, but her service is to punish us conditioned souls who are under her control. She is the warden of the prison house of material existence. So, success for a prisoner is to be released from the prison--not to get better facility within the
prison house. Success is to be freed.
Srila Prabhupada's definition was so intelligent and subtle. He was saying that success doesn't mean to move to a better grade of prison cell: a better house, a better office, a better car--a better material position. Success means to get out of prison, and that is achieved by surrendering to Krsna, as stated by Him in the Bhagavad-gita (7.14):

daivi hy esa guna-mayi
mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante
mayam etam taranti te

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.”
We must take shelter of Krsna and move from the control of the material energy to the protection of the spiritual energy, Srimati Radharani. But we cannot do that directly. We do it by taking shelter of someone who has taken shelter of someone who has taken shelter of someone who has taken shelter of Srimati Radharani. And that is parampara. We take shelter of Srila Prabhupada and of those working under his direction, just as he took shelter of his guru maharaja, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and served him, and as Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura took shelter of his spiritual master, Srila Gaurakisora dasa Babaji Maharaja, and served
him--like that, all the way back to Krsna.
It is a simple process, but it requires humility. And that can be a problem, a big, big problem. We don't want to submit, to surrender. When Hiranyakasipu asked his five-year-old son Prahlada, “What is the best thing you have learned in school?” he thought his son would say something agreeable or at least cute. Sometimes we also ask a child, “What is your favorite subject?” and we, as relatively good, pious people, would be shocked and dismayed if that five-year-old said, “The best thing I learned
is how to cheat people and get ahead by pushing others into the ground.” We would wonder, “Where did he learn that?” Hiranyakasipu was the type who thought that being selfish and learning how to defeat others was a good thing. So when Prahlada replied, “The best thing I have learned is service to God (sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam),” Hiranyakasipu was shocked: “Where did you learn that? Who has spoiled your consciousness?” The powerful tyrant accused the boy's teachers, “You have taught him this nonsense, bhakti, devotional service to Lord Visnu. You have spoiled his intelligence.” “No, we haven't,” they replied. “He hasn't learned devotional service from us or from anyone else. He seems to be naturally Krsna conscious.”
Then Hiranyakasipu asked his son directly, and Prahlada replied with a verse very similar to the one quoted by Srila Prabhupada in the purport. First he said,
matir na krsne paratah svato va
mitho 'bhipadyeta grha-vratanam
adanta-gobhir visatam tamisram
punah punas carvita-carvananam

“Because of their uncontrolled senses, persons too addicted to materialistic life make progress toward hellish conditions and repeatedly chew that which has already been chewed. Their inclinations toward Krsna are never aroused, either by the instructions of others, by their own efforts, or by a combination of both.” (SB 7.5.30) Now, if one cannot become Krsna conscious by one's own efforts, by the efforts of others, or by the combined efforts of oneself and others, how can one become Krsna conscious? It seems that all logical possibilities have been eliminated.
Then Prahlada said,
naisam matis tavad urukramanghrim
sprsaty anarthapagamo yad-arthah
mahiyasam pada-rajo-'bhisekam
niskincananam na vrnita yavat
“Unless they smear upon their bodies the dust of the lotus feet of a Vaisnava completely freed from material contamination, persons very much inclined toward materialistic life cannot be attached to the lotus feet of the Lord, who is glorified for His uncommon activities. Only by becoming Krsna conscious and taking shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord in this way can one be freed from material contamination.” (SB 7.5.32) One cannot become Krsna conscious unless one has been favored by the dust of the lotus feet of
a pure devotee who has nothing to do with the material world. By taking shelter of the lotus feet of a pure devotee--by serving the instructions of a pure devotee-one becomes free from anarthas, unwanted, miserable conditions. The miseries of birth, death, disease, and old age are all unwanted. And by following the pure devotee's instructions one becomes free from all unwanted, material desires, which bind us to material existence. One becomes free from everything unfavorable to Krsna consciousness.
Srila Prabhupada explains that Prahlada was indirectly telling his father, “You need not worry about becoming Krsna conscious, because one can become Krsna conscious only if he bows down to the lotus feet of a pure devotee, but you are too proud, so you will never bow down to a pure devotee. So, my dear father, you need not worry about becoming Krsna conscious. It just won't happen.”
We tend to like to identify with Prahlada and to see other people as Hiranyakasipus, but if we--I shouldn't speak for all of us, but many of us--if we look inside ourselves we will see that we also are not that humble. We also have a little rebellious spirit. We don't want to submit or surrender. We also have something inside us that thinks, as some people actually say, “I'll never surrender. I'll never submit.” Or, “I can surrender to God but not to any human being. I can serve God but not some human being.” But that false spirit of independence will not help us.
Now, given that we have so many doubts and reservations and rebellious tendencies, what hope do we have? The good news is that in this age of Kali, Sri Krsna came in the mood of Srimati Radharani. And as we read in the purport, Srimati Radharani is the tenderhearted feminine counterpart of Krsna. In The Nectar of Devotion also, Srila Prabhupada says that Srimati Radharani represents the compassionate nature of Krsna. Because Krsna is the father, He might be a little strict (which is sometimes necessary and beneficial), but the mother may be more compassionate, more understanding, more encouraging. Therefore devotees approach Krsna through Sri Radha.
“Because Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it is very difficult to approach Him. But the devotees, taking advantage of His compassionate nature, which is represented by Radharani, always pray to Radharani for Krsna's compassion.” (NOD Ch 22) Srimati Radharani, among other qualifications, is a maha-bhagavata. She sees that everyone is a better servant of Krsna than She. So if someone approaches Her with a desire to serve Krsna, She'll very easily recommend the person to Krsna, and when
Radharani recommends someone, Krsna is bound to accept, because ultimately Krsna wants to please Radharani. Transcendentally, Krsna comes under the control of Radharani. Thus in Radharani's hometown of Varsana, the devotees have a saying: “Whatever Radha does, Krsna likes. Whatever Radha likes, Krsna does.” So if Radharani wants Krsna to accept us, then Krsna will accept us.
Because today is a special day, Radhastami, we can approach Radharani directly--but even then it is through Her servants. Even when we are in the spiritual world, whenever that fortunate occasion takes place, we will serve Radha and Krsna under the guidance of Their servants--not directly. That is an eternal principle. There are different rasas, or relationships, we can have with Krsna, but in whatever relationship we have, we will be under the eternal guidance of some eternal associates of Krsna. As Sri Caitanya
Mahaprabhu says,
naham vipro na ca nara-patir napi vaisyo na sudro
naham varni na ca grha-patir no vanastho yatir va
kintu prodyan-nikhila-paramananda-purnamrtabdher
gopi-bhartuh pada-kamalayor dasa-dasanudasah
“I am not a brahmana, I am not a ksatriya, I am not a vaisya or a sudra. Nor am I a brahmacari, a householder, a vanaprastha, or a sannyasi. I identify Myself only as the servant of the servant of the servant of the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krsna, the maintainer of the gopis. He is like an ocean of nectar, and He is the cause of universal transcendental bliss. He is always existing with brilliance.” (Cc Madhya 13.80)
That principle, being the servant of the servant of the servant of the servant of Krsna, the maintainer of the gopis, applies both in the conditioned state of sadhana-bhakti and in the liberated state of sadhya-bhakti, or prema-bhakti. It is an eternal principle. And we should welcome the opportunity to serve the servant of the servants. We shouldn't
think, “Oh, all right, in the stage of bondage now, I guess I have to do it. It is the only way to get out.” Like, “Okay, I'm in the prison now, so I have to do what the warden says, but once I'm out, that's it. Then I'm free.” No. This is an eternal principle, and we should welcome it and relish it.
Srila Prabhupada paraphrased Srila Rupa Gosvami's verse about being haunted by ghosts: “Anyone who has any desire or aspiration for satisfying his senses by becoming more and more important, either in the material sense or in the spiritual sense, cannot actually relish the really sweet taste of devotional service.” (NOD Ch 3) And in a class, Srila Prabhupada stated the same thing in a positive way: “The more you become the servant of the servant of the servant of the servant of Krsna, the sweeter and sweeter and sweeter and sweeter devotional service becomes.” So it is glorious to be the servant of the servant of the servant.
We want to take shelter of one who is niskincana, who has no material possessions. Yes, in India there are sadhus, saintly persons, who hardly have material possessions. But as Srila Prabhupada explains, niskincana also means one who is free from false proprietorship. Here we are in a beautiful temple, and if I think, “This is my temple,” that is false proprietorship. But if I think, “This is Krsna's temple, and I am just a humble servant of His servants,” that is also niskincana. A pure devotee's only possession, so
to speak, is his or her service to the lotus feet of the Lord. And the more lotus feet we have to serve--the lotus feet of the servant of the lotus feet of the servant of the lotus feet of the servant of the servant of the lotus feet of Krsna--the richer we are in bhakti, which is the life of the living entity.
Today's verse is one of a series that all make the same point: if we are not engaged in pure devotional service, we are dead. In other words, pure devotional service is real life, and anyone engaged in anything other than devotional service is just a walking dead man, a breathing dead man.
Srila Prabhupada has given us this life. He has given us this opportunity. Sri Krsna Caitanya is Krsna, but in the mood of Radharani, and in Her kindhearted, tenderhearted, merciful, compassionate mood of love and care, He has given us the easiest and most practical process for success in the present age: the chanting of the holy names.

harer nama harer nama
harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha

“In this Age of Kali there is no other means, no other means, no other means for self-realization than chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name of Lord Hari [Krsna].” (Brhan-naradiya Purana 38.126) By chanting the holy names without offense all the dirty things in the heart become cleansed (ceto-darpana-marjanam). Even if we have that little rebellious spirit--“Why should I surrender?”--by chanting, which is both easy and enjoyable, all these dirty things, these misconceptions and false identifications, are cleansed, and naturally we come to our real position as eternal servants of the servants of Krsna. So it is very easy. We just have
to do it.
This is, ultimately, Srimati Radharani's mercy. It is Her mercy that Srila Prabhupada came to America and gave us Krsna consciousness. In a poem he wrote on board a cargo ship on his way to America, Srila Prabhupada wrote, krsna taba punya habe bhai, e-punya koribe jabe radharani khusi habe, dhruva ati boli toma tai: “O brothers, you will obtain your good fortune from the Supreme Lord Krsna only when Srimati Radharani becomes pleased with you.” First we must please Radharani. And how? By following the orders of the spiritual master, serving the mission of the spiritual master. So, we have everything--every opportunity. We have beautiful Deities, Sri Sri Radha-Giridhari; we have Srila Prabhupada, our founder-acarya; we have his instructions, his books, his translations of the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam; we have the holy name; we have the association of devotees--we have everything. We just have to take advantage, and that is why we are here.
Any questions or comments?
Child: How do you get the aroma of tulasi, or how do you become the servant of the servant of the servant?
Giriraj Swami: She is a very intelligent young lady. Do you know what ISKCON is?
Child: Not really.
Giriraj Swami: ISKCON is the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, a spiritual organization founded by Srila Prabhupada; the temple where we are now sitting is part of that organization. You could say that the more senior devotees here who are steady in devotional service, in following Srila Prabhupada's instructions, are servants of Srila Prabhupada, that Srila Prabhupada is serving the instructions of his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta, and that Srila Bhaktisiddhanta is serving the instructions of his spiritual master. And so by following the instructions of one or more of the solid devotees of Srila Prabhupada here, you are automatically serving the servant of the servant of the servant of the servant, going through the line all the way back to Krsna.
Gentleman: How can one overcome the fear of losing one's identity and uniqueness by surrendering oneself to a pure devotee?
Giriraj Swami: Every living entity has a unique spiritual identity, and the process of Krsna consciousness means to discover what one's unique, specific, eternal identity is. So you don't lose your identity; rather, you discover your actual unique identity.
A godbrother of mine had a nice thought. Just imagine Krsna's situation. There He is in the spiritual sky, Goloka Vrndavana, surrounded by wish-fulfilling cows and trees and gems, being served by unlimited numbers of beautiful, pure, loving devotees. And off somewhere in a cloud is a bunch of angry, morose, belligerent souls, each determined that “I'm not going to serve Him.” Why should Krsna bother with them? Why should He even care? He is enjoying an eternal, celestial party. Why should He bother about us?
One answer is that each one of us is a unique living entity. No two of us are exactly the same. And so when we are liberated our mood of service to Krsna will be unique. This means that as long as we remain in the material world, Krsna in the spiritual world will be deprived of the particular flavor of loving service that each of us is meant to offer Him. Each of us has a specific, unique contribution to make to Krsna's pleasure that no one else can make in the exact same way.
So we are fully individual and personal. Even in the stage of sadhana-bhakti, we always have our individual preferences, but as devotees we give the highest preference to Krsna's pleasure. Parents often sacrifice doing what they would ordinarily like to do, for the sake of doing what their children would like them to do. The parents are still individuals, but they give priority to pleasing their children. And when their children are happy, they feel happy. One reason we try so hard to have nice programs for
children is that when the children want to come to the temple, even if the parents are feeling a little lethargic, the children will prevail upon them: “Come on, Mommy. Come on, Daddy. I want to go to the temple. I want to see the Deities. I want to sing and dance in the kirtana and arati. I want to meet the other children. I want to eat prasada.” Do you agree with me?
Child: Yes.
Giriraj Swami: And the parents will come, not because they don't have their individuality, but out of love. They get more happiness when they see their children happy than when they do things for their own satisfaction that would leave the children feeling neglected. So in devotional service you remain individual but you give preference to Krsna. And as you become purified, you actually experience more pleasure in doing what Krsna likes than you would get out of doing what you would ordinarily like for your own sake.
So do not hesitate. Serving a pure devotee, serving a servant of the servants of Radha and Krsna, is not a matter of force, being forced into a mold without any freedom or individuality. Rather, it is an opportunity for the conditioned soul to realize his or her fullest potential, fullest individuality, and fullest freedom, in divine, ecstatic love.
Thank you very much.

The Birth of Krishna: When God Came To Earth

Posted: 8/22/11 08:04 AM ET

Krishna means "all-attractive" and avatar means "descent of the divine." Today is Krishna Janmastami, the birth or descent of Krishna, the god worshipped by millions of Hindus around the world. Krishna appeared on this earth, at midnight, approximately 5,000 years ago in Mathura, located in Northern India, 91 miles south of New Delhi.

Krishna is God as never seen before. He wore many hats: child, friend, servant, romantic lover, cowherd boy and killer of demons. For someone coming from a Western paradigm and even for some Hindus, Krishna can easily be passed off as a mythological figure created by a fiction writer for the purpose of entertainment.

However, hundreds of millions of people will perform severe fasts, engage in extended rituals and worship, recite extensively his activities and also the verses of the Bhagavad Gita for the purpose of remembering him and his activities on this day and throughout the year.

Krishna is the speaker of the Bhagavad Gita ("the song of God"), which is considered by many Hindus as the most prominent, referenced and commented-on scriptural text in all of India. The Gita serves as the guidebook for many Hindus and non-Hindus on how to live a life of devotion to God, while also cultivating a healthy detachment from the things of this world. In the past and even in the present, plaintiffs and defendants have sworn on the Gita in the courts of law in India.

Krishna's life has become the subject matter of textbooks in Hinduism classes in many universities and the subject of debate amongst philosophers and theologians. Those who are unfamiliar with his life and activities are befuddled by Krishna, while the devotees rejoice upon hearing and reading the wonderful stories of his life.

One of the most endearing qualities demonstrated by Krishna during his earthly manifestation was his willingness to relate to his devotees in multiple capacities. Even though he is the supreme deity according to the Gita and some of the Puranas, he always experiences great joy in the service of his devotees.

In the role of a child, he would carry the shoes of his father. Similar to Jesus washing the feet of his 12 disciples during the last supper, Krishna, with great joy, washed the feet of great saintly persons. The most prominent act of service demonstrated by Krishna was immediately after he spoke the Gita, when he drove Arjuna's chariot around like a humble chauffeur. The entire time, he obeyed, like a servant, every order of Arjuna.

These descriptions of Krishna's activities can be very difficult to comprehend, especially if one is used to the notion of God being the supreme father who is angry, jealous and eager to punish those who don't follow his law. There are descriptions that better fit Krishna: He's a poet, a singer, a dancer, he likes to serve, and all one has to do is look at a sunset, sunrise or any of the other wonders of nature and it becomes easy to understand the creative and artistic side of Krishna.

What I found especially intriguing about Krishna was the description given in an ancient Hindu text, the Brahma Samhita: "He has an eternal blissful spiritual body ... He is a person possessing the beauty of a blooming youth..." God is not an old man with a long white beard. I found this to be a very refreshing idea! If God is old, that means he falls under the influence of time and is subject to decay and possibly even death. Here he's described as an eternally youthful person beyond time and space.

It's not possible for us, with our limited and inaccurate sense perception and logic, to comprehend the nature, quality and personhood of Krishna. Hindu scriptures and sages explain that one needs to qualify oneself to understand God. Purifying one's senses, mind, consciousness and soul is the prerequisite for gaining access to this knowledge.

For example, before studying calculus, one needs to qualify one's self by studying arithmetic, algebra and geometry. Otherwise, more advanced subjects won't make any sense. Qualities of pride, envy, greed, anger and selfish desire must be purged as they cloud the ego.

Simultaneously, humility, nonviolence, forgiveness and tolerance need to be implemented into our character as they bring clarity into our lives. Without an endeavor to fulfill these prerequisites, God will only remain a theoretical concept.

Getting to know Krishna is a lot like getting to know anyone, as it requires time and commitment. Krishna explains in the Gita that he doesn't need anything nor does he want anything, but one who renders service to him becomes his friend. All-in-all, even though He's the supreme creator and the cause of all causes, he's looking to engage in a loving reciprocal relationship with those who are interested and he promises that it will be a two-way street where he's willing to do his part.

Radha Damodar Vilasa - Must read!!!

Every genuine movement attracts persons who stand out by their acts of selfless sacrifice. In the Hare Krishna movement, Vishnujana Swami and Jayananda Prabhu were two such persons. Their spirit of humble service and commitment to spreading the glories of the Holy Name of the Lord left an indelible impression on everyone who met them. Each became a legend in his own time. Vishnujana Swami was active in devotional service for only eight years and Jayänanda for only ten before they passed from our vision. They left behind no disciples, no books, no temples. This book is a humble attempt to properly glorify these outstanding devotees. The goal is to preserve their place in Vaishnava history so that succeeding generations may know of the important roles they played in helping Srila Prabhupada establish Lord Caitanya’s mission worldwide. Although saintliness is rarely achieved, Vishnujana Swami and Jayananda Prabhu seem to be acknowledged as saintly by the people who knew them.

Preaching in villages - a novel idea

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My name is Samik Rsi Dasa (ACBSP) and I have been an ISKCON devotee since 1972 when I came to the USA to practice Medicine. Since then I have tried to serve the movement in various capacities such as Temple President (1996-2010) in Towaco, New Jersey as well as other services by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and the Vaisnavas.

I am approaching you simply for your blessings, input, advice and direction on spreading Srila Prabhupada’s mercy to the traditionally underserved members of society such as resident of towns that do not have ISKCON temple and also smaller villages.

NEW PREACHING MODEL – “CABINET TEMPLE”
I would like to introduce a preaching concept to spread Srila Prabhupada’s movement to not only the large cities but also to the smaller population centers such as medium towns, college towns, and even villages. The idea is to establish a “portable ISKCON center” or Krishna mini-temple in the form of a large cabinet that serves as a small altar with pictures, offering space, chanting paraphernalia, tilak and a set of Srila Prabhupada’s books in the local language.

We envision many such “centers” throughout India and perhaps other places in the world as well. Since there is no need for obtaining real estate or building or maintaining temples or elaborate puja the overhead for maintaining these preaching centers will be very low.

These centers would be placed primarily in homes, businesses, factories etc. of people who are very supportive and favorable to the movement’s goals and would like to offer some space for this service. The active preaching work would be done at the centers either by the host or by our own ISKCON preachers who can travel to the various centers to give support, encouragement, advice and association.

If for any reason an established host devotee feels that the center may have become difficult to manage, then this could be moved easily to another host in that area who may want to serve in this capacity. This model may even evolve into a rotational model where a number of hosts may keep the temple for a certain number of months in the year.

The goal of this model is to inject the essence of Srila Prabhupada’s teachings with minimal hindrances that are typically faced in the traditional establishment of temples and go straight to the hearts of people.

INSPIRATION
I was inspired to pursue this mode of preaching after visiting many large temples in India and around the world and seeing that they are being visited by thousands of people. But what I felt was missing is the personal one-on-one attention and follow-up for those fortunate souls who have some desire to see the Lord in our ISKCON temples but there was not enough man-power to attend to each individual. This model takes Krishna to their homes and into their hearts via preaching from Srila Prabhupada’s books in their own environment and in their own language.  Similar models are used by successful Christian churches as well who have established “reading rooms” around the world. These reading rooms are rented or purchased real-estate, but our model will not need any real estate funding.

FIRST STEPS
We envision starting with a small pilot program where we would make some contacts with devotees and supporters who are willing and eager to provide some space that would remain accessible on certain times of the day, manage the “cabinet temple”, have periodic discussions/kirtans or other preaching activities to the extent that they can manage. These members will be given full support by visiting ISKCON devotees.

We will establish a charitable trust fund only for this specific purpose.  I will commit seed funds to get this project rolling.  If Krishna so desires, the project would be such that it could sustain and even perpetuate itself.

HUMBLE REQUESTS
  •  Advice and Input: Since this is just a preliminary idea, we would appreciate some input from you with regards to any practical aspects of this endeavor including implementation, starting, local considerations etc. This will be very helpful to develop this plan and avoid unforeseen pitfalls that you may have encountered or can foresee.
  • ISKCON preachers: We would need a team of enthusiastic ISKCON preachers who are willing to travel in local regions to encourage the hosts, give lectures, special programs like video shows, small dramas, morning street harinam sankirtan (prabhat-pheri) etc. We would like to establish a fund that can provide a stipend to these traveling preachers. These preachers will be the vibrant soul of this preaching model. We are requesting if you know of any such devotees who you feel may be interested in this service kindly ask them to contact us or provide us with their contact information.
  • Contacts of Hosts: The foundational success of this program will depend on establishing such host locations. These hosts may be initiated devotees, life members, Vaishnavas or simply favorable people interested in providing space as a service to God. We would be very appreciative if you could contact and encourage a number of potential hosts who may be interested in serving in this way. This would not only be a preaching center but also serve to purify the life, home and entire town of the host – who would get a lot of spiritual credit for very little effort.
  •  Other supportive contacts: If you could also provide us other devotees, managers and well-wishers who could help develop this idea into reality. These would be senior devotees who have management skills, vision and dedication to Srila Prabhupda and can serve as strategic advisors as well as regional managers.
In my own life, when I came to America in 1971, I could have very easily become materialistic and absorbed fully into the so-called Western lifestyle with no spiritual future. But by the immense causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada who came into our lives, we were saved and continue to receive his kind mercy. I personally feel that I can never repay back to Srila Prabhupada what he has done for us, but at least I can make some attempt to spread his transcendental teachings to as many people as possible with the resources as our disposal. We have no other motive than to please Srila Prabhupada.

The key advantage of this “cabinet temple” model is that it gives the greatest spiritual “bang for the buck”. So for every dollar invested we would see immediate return on investment in the form of direct preaching. To establish a traditional temple or even preaching center involves so much effort and capital to obtain the land and building. But this model by-passes that largest hurdle and goes straight to the point.

In this way we are hoping to bring to reality Lord Caitanya’s famous prediction of spreading Krishna Consciousness in every town and village.

Please pass this letter on to other Vaisnavas who you feel would be enthused by this project and would be interested in helping in any capacity.

Thank you again for your kindly giving your time to read this.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada,
Samik Rsi Dasa

The Telugu version of ‘Srimad Bhagavatham', the great epic considered an elixir for redressal of worldly grievances, is now available in the stalls at International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

The volume was formally released on Friday by TTD Executive Officer L.V. Subrahmanyam.

According to mythology, Bhagavatha was written by sage Vyasa upon instructions from his mentor, Narada Muni. As a befitting tribute to the sage-composer, the release was slated for Friday, when Vyasa Purnima (the appearance day of Vyasa), was celebrated.

The treasure trove of spiritual knowledge was intended to provide respite to the society and help people overcome despair arising out of materialistic pleasures.

“While our founder, Srila Prabhupada, wrote the English commentary with word-by-word meaning for theBhagavatha for the benefit of the global readers, the same is available now in Telugu,” said Revati Ramandas, president of ISKCON's Tirupati unit.

Mr. Subrahmanyam said the Telugu volume should be read by one and all, irrespective of religious affiliations and spiritual inclinations, as it would open the door to eternal bliss.

Hare Krishna Satapathy, Vice-Chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, former Chairman of Chittoor Zilla Parishat P. Siddarami Reddy, advocate I. Guruswamy, members of ISKCON order Bhimadas Prabhu (USA), Vaishnavanghrisevak Das (Mumbai), Satya Gopinath Das (Anantapur), Vedanta Chaitanya Das (Hyderabad), and vice-president of ISKCON-Tirupati Rupeshwara Chaitanya Das, took part.
