Mukunda Goswami

His Holiness Mukunda Goswami, an ISKCON pioneer, guru, and one of Srila Prabhupada’s very first disciples, has undergone a successful triple-bypass surgery after suffering a heart-attack.

However devotees worldwide are still praying intensely as he prepares to undergo another high risk surgery on his hip tomorrow (Thursday October 29th).

On the night of October 22nd, Mukunda Goswami – respectfully known as Maharaja -- slipped at his residence on the ISKCON New Govardhana Farm in Australia and broke his hip.

As they assessed him for surgery on the hip, doctors at the Tweed Hospital on Australia’s Gold Coast detected an underlying heart condition, and canceled the hip surgery due to the risk of further heart complications.

During the night of October 24th, Maharaja suffered a heart attack, and was transferred to a larger regional hospital. There, he was scheduled for a triple-bypass heart surgery.

Despite his condition he was in good spirits as he awaited surgery. “He was chanting Hare Krishna, listening to recordings of Srila Prabhupada chanting the Holy Names, and his disciples were also reading Srimad-Bhagavatam to him,” reported Nitai Chandra Das.

Nitai Chandra’s father, Krsna Kirtan Das, is caring for Mukunda Goswami and liasing with hospital staff along with Vishnujan Das and Madan Mohan Das.

“We read some messages to Maharaja from Godbrothers and sisters, disciples and wellwishers, and he was pleased to hear them,” added Malini Durr.

The six-hour triple bypass surgery was a success. Afterwards, his heart was beating on its own, which doctors called “the best case scenario” given his pre-surgery condition.

But prayers are needed now more than ever. Maharaja is currently in the Intensive Care Unit, and his orthopedic surgeon plans to operate on his hip tomorrow.

According to the surgeon, as well as the general risks of the operation associated with old age, Mukunda Goswami is especially high-risk due to having just undergone a major surgery on top of his already weak heart.

However, delaying the operation also carries a high mortality risk, as Maharaja’s lungs have begun to rattle because of his long period of immobility in hospital, which increases the chances of pneumonia. So, doctors say, getting him up and moving is extremely important.

More news on the outcome of the operation will come very soon. Of course, visiting will not be allowed until after a substantial recovery time.

“[In the meantime] We now beg all of you to please pray to Srila Prabhupada, Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Lord Nrsimhadeva,” says Krsna Kirtan.

Nimai Agarwal, 16, speaks on a Kids Spirit Panel at the Parliament

Several ISKCON devotees contributed to the Parliament of the World’s Religions – the largest interfaith gathering in the world – this year, with kirtan, japa, and an introduction to the Bhakti philosophy.

The first Parliament was held in 1893 and is recognized as the birth of formal interreligious dialogue worldwide. It wasn’t held again until one hundred years later in 1993, but has been held every five years since then.

This year’s Parliament, which ran from October 15th to 19th at the Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, drew somewhere between eight and ten thousand people from eighty nations and fifty different faiths.  It was so successful that outgoing chairman Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid announced it would be held every two years from now on.

Major speakers included interfaith scholar Dr. Karen Armstrong, professor of contemporary Islamic studies Dr. Tariq Ramadan, United States Ambassador for International Religious FreedomRabbi David Saperstein, and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall.

ISKCON GBC member and Communications Director Anuttama Das, meanwhile, spoke on a panel about Hinduism and Humanitarian Service. As a Vaishnava, he was the only panel member not from an impersonalist school.

“I talked about our Hare Krishna Food Relief programs being the largest vegetarian food relief program in the world, including the Annamrita program in India which feeds 1.2 million children a day,” he says. “I also spoke about our eco farms, like our Govardhana eco-village North of Mumbai, and our hospitals such as Bhaktivedanta Hospital.”

“Finally,” he adds, “I mentioned that ultimately our focus is on the spiritual benefit of all people, and that’s why we published and distributed 512 million books in the last fifty years.”

Anuttama also participated on a panel about Abuse within Religious and Spiritual Communities. He talked about the need for spiritual leaders to be transparent and accountable, and about what practical steps organizations, communities, members, and leaders can take to ensure healthy social dynamics and interpersonal care.

Other speakers included scholar Radhika Ramana Das (Ravi Gupta), who gave a presention on “Creation and Chaos” according to the Upanishads, and family team Lokadhyaksha Das, Vidarbha Dasi, and their son Nimai from Baltimore, Maryland.

Vidarbha Dasi participated in a panel on Remembering the Divine, with members of different faiths talking about how they remember God in their practice.

“I talked about how our remembrance is mainly based on the chanting of the Holy Name, and recited the first verse of the Siksastakam, which lists the benefits of chanting,” she says. “I mentioned that we must develop the qualities of humility and tolerance to approach this meditation, and that its purpose is to develop a loving relationship with God.”

Other faith representatives on the panel also prioritized chanting the Holy Name of God, with the Sikh representative speaking about chanting Sat Nam, or “True Name,” and the Muslim about chanting the 99 names of Allah.

“It was very nice,” says Vidarbha. “It felt like there was a lot of connection, and that we were all speaking the same language – our meditation processes sounded very similar.”

Vidarbha’s son Nimai, 16, who writes for the interfaith online teen magazine Kids Spirit, also participated, speaking at a Kids Spirit panel. Discussing how religious practice came naturally to him growing up as a Vaishnava, he talked about how his faith was enriched by writing about it in the magazine, and also by bringing it into conversation with other traditions.

A highlight of ISKCON devotees’ contribution to the Parliament was the Bhakti Experience hour from 7 to 8 every morning. It was led by Radhika Ramana on the first day, and by Anuttama, Spanish Fork temple president Charu Das and Lokadhyaksha Das on the following days. It drew between 25 and 50 people every day, and included kirtan and japa meditation, along with readings from Srila Prabhupada’s writings.

“People were very enthusiastic to chant, and asked a lot of deep questions,” says Lokadhyaksa.

Meanwhile Charu and a group of twenty devotees from the Spanish Fork and Salt Lake City temples were invited to sing kirtan in the main hall during lunch hour on Friday. They were joined by three Jewish rabbis, and alternated between chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, and chanting Hebrew names for God. Then on Monday, local band Ananda Groove, a mainstay at the Utah Festival of Colors, performed a Mantra Rock kirtan in the main concourse. On both days, hundreds of people danced and chanted along with the devotees.

“One 85-year old Jewish lady even got out of her wheelchair and was dancing for ten minutes,” says Charu. “I think everybody received the kirtan as an extremely refreshing component of the Parliament.”

Devotee participants felt it was important for ISKCON to have a presence at the Parliament of the World’s Religions, and also for them to see the work of different faith traditions.

“It was nice just to experience and appreciate how God is being worshipped in so many different ways – every tradition seems to have some unique, special richness,” says Vidarbha.

Giriraj Swami's photo.

Hearing Srila Prabhupada on Sarat-purnima . . Last night was sarat-purnima, and I listened to Srila Prabhupada’s dictation of Krsna book, “The Rasa Dance: Introduction,” and was especially charmed by the following section:

“When Lord Krsna began to blow His flute, the gopis all over Vrndavana became enchanted. . . . Immediately upon hearing the vibration of the flute, they all left their respective engagements and proceeded to the spot where Krsna was standing. While they ran very swiftly, their earrings swung back and forth. . . . Some were engaged in serving their husbands, and some were themselves engaged in eating, but caring neither to serve their husbands nor eat, they immediately left. Some of them wanted to decorate their faces with cosmetic ointments and to dress themselves very nicely before going to Krsna, but unfortunately they could not finish their cosmetic decorations or put on their clothes in the right way because of their anxiety to meet Krsna immediately. Their faces were decorated hurriedly and were haphazardly finished; some even put the lower part of their clothes on the upper part of their bodies and the upper part on the lower part.

“When a person becomes attracted by Krsna and is in full Krsna consciousness, he does not care for any worldly duties, even though very urgent. Krsna consciousness is so powerful that it gives everyone relief from all material activities. Srila Rupa Gosvami has written a very nice verse wherein one gopi advises another, ‘My dear friend, if you desire to enjoy the company of material society, friendship, and love, then please do not go to see that smiling boy Govinda who is standing on the bank of the Yamuna and playing His flute, His lips brightened by the beams of the full moonlight.’ Srila Rupa Gosvami indirectly instructs that one who has been captivated by the beautiful smiling face of Krsna has lost all attraction for material enjoyments. This is the test of advancement in Krsna consciousness . . .

“Maharaja Pariksit heard Sukadeva Gosvami explain the situation of the gopis who assembled with Krsna in the rasa dance. When he heard that some of the gopis, simply by concentrating on Krsna as their paramour, became freed from all contamination of material birth and death, he said, ‘The gopis did not know that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They accepted Him as a beautiful boy and considered Him to be their paramour. So how was it possible for them to get freed from the material condition just by thinking of a paramour?’

“On hearing this question from Maharaja Pariksit, Sukadeva Gosvami replied, ‘My dear King, your question is already answered, even before this incident.’ . . . Sukadeva Gosvami then reminded Pariksit Maharaja about the salvation of Sisupala. Sisupala was always envious of Krsna, and because of his envy Krsna killed him. But since Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sisupala gained salvation simply by seeing Him. If an envious person can get salvation simply by concentrating his mind on Krsna, then what to speak of the gopis, who are so dear to Krsna and always think of Him in love? There must be some difference between the enemies and the friends. If Krsna’s enemies could get freed from material contamination and become one with the Supreme, then certainly His dear friends like the gopis can achieve such freedom and much more.

“Sukadeva Gosvami continued to inform Maharaja Pariksit that Krsna is not an ordinary person but rather the Supreme Personality of Godhead – imperishable, immeasurable, and without any material qualities but full of all spiritual qualities. He appears in this material world out of His causeless mercy, and whenever He appears, He appears as He is, without change. . . . The conclusion is that if one somehow or other becomes attached to Krsna or attracted to Him, either because of His qualities of beauty, opulence, fame, strength, renunciation, or knowledge, through affection or friendship, or even through lust, anger, or fear, then one’s salvation and freedom from material contamination are assured.

“In the Bhagavad-gita, Eighteenth Chapter, the Lord states that one who is engaged in preaching Krsna consciousness is very dear to Him. A preacher has to face many difficulties in his struggle to preach pure Krsna consciousness. Sometimes he has to suffer bodily injuries, and sometimes he has to meet death also. All this is taken as a great austerity on behalf of Krsna. Krsna therefore has said that such a preacher is very, very dear to Him. If Krsna’s enemies can expect salvation simply by concentrating their minds on Him, then what to speak of persons who are so dear to Krsna? The conclusion should be that the salvation of those who are engaged in preaching Krsna consciousness in the world is guaranteed in all circumstances. But such preachers never care for salvation, because factually one who is engaged in Krsna consciousness, devotional service, has already achieved salvation.” (Krsna, Chapter 29)

I pray to follow in the footsteps of the gopis and the stalwart preachers of pure Krsna consciousness, such as Srila Prabhupada, and give everything for the pleasure and satisfaction of Krsna – and His most beloved devotees.

Hare Krsna.

Damodar Lila

Lecture on Damodar Lila  by HG Nirantara Prabhu on 19 Oct 2014 at Los Angeles

(Nicholas D'Angelo was born on May 20, 1950 and was raised a strict Roman Catholic. He went to Catholic school for 13 years, but did not even finish one semester of college at St. Johns University in New York City. Instead, the dormant lusty desires in his heart manifested and he became a "hippy" in 1968. - See more at: http://iskconleaders.com/nirantara-prabhu/#sthash.LRoHflha.dpuf)

Expert at everything. That was Prabhupada. Shyamasundar: Once we were in Mayapur. We had an old—I think it was a 1948 Hudson or some old, big car. And I was driving. We had left the main road. If you have been on the main road you know how bad it is. You can imagine how bad this secondary road was like. We were going to visit Lalit Prasad, who was Bhaktisiddhanta’s living brother, who was a very old man then. We didn’t know the road, and we didn’t know the way very well. We knew that it was up that road somewhere. And we drove halfway up or so, and we came to a place where there was a cement bridge over a big gully. But the monsoon run-off had washed the bank away on both sides of three or four feet, as I recall. This may be an exaggeration, but it was some distance, maybe three feet. And we could see up and down this canal that there was no other way for the automobile to cross, and we still had five or six kilometers to go. So Prabhupada studied the situation. He didn’t even get out of the car. He just studied the situation a little bit. Brahmananda and some of the other big guys sat in the back. He said, “You boys get out. Shyamasundar, you back up, and get going very fast, and we will make it.” [Laughs.] I got back about fifty feet or so and just gunned that old tank. And off we went. Waaaow! We flew over that first gap, screaming across this cement bridge. Waaaow! It looked like a Steve McQueen great escape movie. And the boys walked down around and got back in and off we went. [Laughs.] He was expert at everything. He also used to know everything about engineering. He used to make drawings. In fact, this may not be well known how early the Mayapur project was actually started. Right after Tamal or somebody got that first little, tiny parcel of land in Mayapur, Prabhupada planned the whole thing out one day in London at Bury Place. He sketched it all out, the temples and the buildings. And he called and asked me if there were any English devotees that were architects or knew anything. There was one, Ranchor, and Nara-Narayan was there, the builder. So he had them come up, and he submitted this idea. He said, “We have only a few days until I must leave. I want you to work on a plan for a huge complex for Mayapur.” And that’s all he thought about for days. This must have been 1971 or ‘72. And we would walk in the park in Russell Square every morning then, and he would point to different buildings, and he would ask Ranchor and Nara-Narayan questions. You knew he knew the answers already, but he was testing their ability. Expert at everything. That was Prabhupada.
