Yawning?

Hare Krishna Prabhu, please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Please could You explain why we yawn!

I heard that there are different types of air movements in the body. So this yawning is one of them.

Also my sister says that this happens when brain wants some air?!

Some people say that it is because we want to sleep.

But in my case when it happens i do not feel sleepy but refreshed. What might be the reason?

And is it normal to yawn too many times? Especially when we sit with straight back in lotus posture?

:)

Thank You!

hare krsna mataji.. apology for the delay..

yawn is a reflex of simultaneous inhalation of air and stretching of the eardrums, followed by exhalation of breath. pandiculation is the act of yawning and stretching simultaneously.

Yawning in adults occurs most often immediately before and after sleep, during tedious activities and as a result of its contagiousness, and is commonly associated with tiredness and stress, overwork, lack of stimulation and boredom, though studies show it may be linked to the cooling of the brain. In human, yawning is often triggered by others yawning (e.g., seeing a person yawning, talking to someone on the phone who is yawning) and is a typical example of positive feedback.

Yawning involves opening the mouth involuntarily while taking a long, deep breath of air. This is usually done as a result of drowsiness or weariness. Excessive yawning is yawning that happens more often than expected, even if drowsiness or weariness is present.

According to Ayurvedic physiology, there are thirteen types of normal physiological urges that should not be stopped i.e. the urges must pass on otherwise they may cause disturbances in normal physiological behavior of concerned organ system and subsequently causes diseases.

Jrumbha vega (Urge to yawn) – To suppress a yawn means to indirectly vitiate vata dosha by inhibiting its gati (flow) which is almost similar to that in case of sneezing. It  thus produces all the symptoms similar to that of suppressing sneeze.

Yawning is one of the non-suppressible urges, that comes to us.Person who try to suppress yawning develops symptoms that include generalized muscle spasm, convulsions, reduced sensation for touch in skin, tremors in hand and head.

Symptoms are relieved by following all measures to stabilize Vata dosha.
