Sometime back I was studying Bhagavad Gita chapter 16 about the divine and demoniac nature. In that chapter Lord Krsna is explaining the word Abhijathasya. That means by the very birth, certain people are divine and certain people are demoniac.
I was just reflecting upon this with someone. It's not that somebody takes birth by chance or accidentally. Depending on one's own Karma and accumulation of one's piety or impiety, one takes birth in a certain circumstance.
Many years back I heard His Holiness Gaur Govinda Swami Maharaj say that Lord is so merciful that He has arranged the dualities of the world in a way that everybody will get a chance to come across one pure devotee. So, everybody is getting a chance. But it depends on how one takes that opportunity. Free will is there.
But depending on our own Karma we take birth in such and such a situation.
As it's explained in the sixth chapter of Bhagavad Gita,
A yogi who doesn't attain the Supreme in one lifetime, what happens to him? Arjuna is expressing his concern. They have given up a certain lifestyle and accepted a pious lifestyle. They are involved in certain austerities but they could not finish it. So they lost both. But Krsna says, No, there is no diminution. They will take birth in very elevated families, in devotee's family, brahmana's family etc where the atmosphere is conducive for them to carry on devotional service.
When somebody takes birth in a very exalted family, we should understand that that person has already done a lot of piety and hence Krsna has now arranged for that person to grow in spiritual life. The ambience, the care etc everything is given in such a way that that person grows very nicely. If in case that person chooses wrong association then it doesn't matter whether he is born with good facilty or bad facility. If one chooses wrong association the person always goes down and if one chooses right association he always goes up. So, having taken birth if a person chooses good association then that person will grow and if one chooses wrong association then that person will fall down.
We know the story of Ajamila, very nice qualified Brahmana but because of bad association he slided down. But of course once we start coming back to Krsna then Krsna makes all the arrangements to save us. So, even though he was sliding down immediately he was saved.
Prabhupad said that once you start the process of Krsna consciousness then it will drag you to success. That is very amazing!!
Krsna explains that such a birth is given in order to deliver him. Of course Lord Krsna is clarifying very clearly here in his words that a brahmana is the best of all living beings . He is even more exalted when he is endowed with austerities, learning and self satisfaction. The qualities of a brahmana have to manifest in the due course of his lifetime. But if one deviates from the path and associates in a wrong way then it definitely doesn't matter on what kind of piety background we have, one will always slide down.
So, therefore the opportunity given to come to Krsna consciousness is itself like a birth and now being attached to right kind of activities is needed.
