We are reading from Canto 10 chapter 86 text no 52. The chapter is entitled Arjuna kidnaps Subhadra

Devah ksetrani tirthani
Darshana sparsanarcanaih
Sanaih punanti kalena
Tad apy arhattameksaya

Translation and Purport - One can gradually become purified by seeing, touching, worshipping the temple deities, places of piligrimage and holy rivers. But one can attain the same benefits simply by receiving the glance of the exalted sages.

Rather than remaining in seclusion and concentrating on their own perfection, Vaishnava brahmanas of the highest order dedicate their lives to sharing the benediction of the Lord's devotional service.

In the words of the sons of the King Prachinibarhi,
Dear Lord, Your personal associates, Your devotees wander all over the world to purify even the Holy places of pilgrimage. Is not such activity pleasing to those who are afraid of material existence?

And Prahlad Maharaj says,
My dear Lord Nrsimhadev, I see that there are many Saintly persons indeed and I see that they are just interested in their own deliverance. Not caring for the cities and towns, they go to the big Himalayas and forests to meditate with vows of silence, mauna Vrata. As for me however, I do not wish to be liberated alone. I know that without taking shelter of Krsna consciousness, without taking shelter under Your lotus feet, one cannot be happy. Therefore I wish to bring them under Your shelter to Your lotus feet.

This verse is spoken by Sri Krsna when He came to His devotee Srutadeva's house along with all the sages all the way to Mithila. Srutadeva had just glorified Krsna with beautiful prayers and philosophy and now Krsna has held the hand of Srutadeva. He is a poor Brahmin.

As we know that there were two devotees, one is Bahulasva and the other is Srutadeva. Bahulasva was a great king in the line of Janaka Maharaj. He is also a pure devotee and Srutadeva, a poor Brahmin was also a pure devotee. And both of them extend an invitation when the Lord comes to Mithila and the Lord expands Himself and goes to both their houses and this is a recorded conversation between the Lord and Srutadeva.

And now after Srutadeva has offered his prayers, the Lord is little uncomfortable because the Lord is also humble ( it is one of the qualities of the Lord). One of the qualities of the Lord is that He is renounced, Shadaishvarya purna and still He is humble because one of the qualities of the Lord is His humility and therefore it is very difficult to understand for an ordinary man that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead because He doesn't claim that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Vishwanatha Chakravarthi Thakur in his explanation says that when He holds the hands of Srutadeva, he is acknowledging that what he says is correct. He wants to Uphold His devotees and then He speaks this verse,

One can gradually become purified by seeing, touching temple deities, holy places of piligrimage and holy rivers but one can attain the same result simply by receiving the glance of exalted sages.

So, a very important lesson, in fact many important lessons in this chapter and we can see that constant triggering theme of Srimad Bhagavatam is that dont desire to see the Lord but desire to serve the Lord in such a way that the Lord desires to see you. Isn't it amazing? And we can see in this pastime that Srutadeva did not go to Dwaraka to see Krsna and Bahulasva also didn't leave his management and go to Dwaraka to see Krsna but they were such wonderful devotees that the Lord decided to traverse such long distance not just He alone but all that assembly of devotees He brought along with Him to give darshana to Srutadeva and Bahulasva. His devotion drew Krsna from Dwaraka all the way to Mithila and that is glorious. And we can see in Srimad Bhagavatam in the lives of all the great devotees may be Dhruva Maharaj, Prahlad Maharaj, Shabari, etc they all didn't go out of their way searching, Where is God? Where is God? But they were simply engaged in their bhajans and the Lord appeared in front of them.
