The very definition of independence is that, it is something which can be properly used & misused. Otherwise the term becomes meaningless. This possession of independence is 100% with The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Shrikrishna. That is found in the very 1st verse of Srimad Bhagbatam, i.e.... "Janmadasya jatah Itarascharthesu Abhingya Swarat " This word 'swarat' refers to that meaning of independence. And,we, the living entities, being part and parcel of Lord Shrikrishna, inherit this property from Him. But due to effect of illusion on us,that to so severely in the KaliYug, we tend to often forget that,we are just spirit souls inhabiting this body and our independence is quite limited to this body alone, we are simply locally situated. Thus our independence is so little. Any scanty quantity of of quality,if misused, is bound to bounce with lots of complexities to get the jobs done with that particular quality. According to the scriptures, we are qualitatively equal to God, but quantitatively least. We may just think us like tiny sparks of fire, when God is so big a fire. OR this relation may be compared to a drop of water and that of the Pacific ocean.
Due to our ignorance, we can not appropriately calculate our status of independence, and its adverse effects due to misuse. We think insubstantially that we are independent to take our ways. But this is neither possible nor practicable.We are bound to the rules of material nature. Therefore any sober man should think,'Why should I misuse my little independence,which must cost me a lot of misfortunes. The more I follow the ways of this material nature,the better, I can never surpass it, I have got independence only on this body which is also bound to be regulated by the ready made laws of it.
Prakrite kriyamanani........................................... Kartarahm iti manyate.
So the reason for misuse of independence is simply ignorance of it's real definition and status with our body and life.
