Parikshit Maharaja, the grandson of Arjuna is sitting near the lotus feet of Srila Sukadeva Gosvami to hear Srimad Bhagavatam

One question that is very frequently asked is that that although the Srimad Bhagavatam and the Bhagavad Gita are compiled by the same author, Srila Vyasadeva, why is it that the Bhagavatam is considered more exalted than the Bhagavad Gita.

The answer is that Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna, who was playing the role an attached householder and warrior. Whereas the Bhagavatam was spoken to Parikshit Maharja, who having relinquished his kingdom, was in a renounced state of mind. Parikshit Maharaja was the grandson of Arjuna.

When the Bhagavad Gita was spoken to Arjuna on the battlefield, he was still attached to his family members and friends and did not want to fight with his near and dear ones.

Since the state of mind and the level of consciousness of the recipients differed, the level of teachings also differed in both the cases.

The same speaker will impart different levels of knowledge according to the level of the recipient. The same teacher instructs a graduate level student and the same teacher instructs a primary school student. But he will impart different levels of knowledge. One cannot expect him to impart the same knowledge to the primary school students, which he imparts to the graduate level students.

Similarly the knowledge, when given to a renounced soul, automatically comes out higher than the knowledge, which is given to an attached householder.
