On June 15th, the streets of Gaborone vibrated with rhythm, color, and spiritual energy as ISKCON Botswana held its 9th Annual Rathayatra, also known as the Festival of Chariots. What began nine years ago with a handful of determined devotees has grown into one of Botswana’s most anticipated spiritual gatherings, this year attracting over a thousand guests from across the country and neighboring South Africa.

Behind the scenes, weeks of preparation were unfolding. “This year’s Rathayatra was one of our biggest and most memorable so far,” said Keshavananda Das, co-organizer of the festival and disciple of Krishna-Dasa Swami. “We had a detailed spreadsheet with over 150 individual tasks. From government permissions to prasadam planning, every detail mattered.”

A key hurdle this year was adapting to changes in local leadership. “There was a change in government and new leadership within the police,” Keshavananda explained. “That meant revisiting our usual procedures to secure procession permissions. It required more engagement and follow-ups, but with the Lord’s grace, everything came together in time.”

The build-up began on June 14th with a powerfulKirtan Mela, led by visiting and local kirtaniyas and graced by the presence of Bhakti Caitanya Swami and Rama Govinda Swami. “Maharaja gave Jagannatha Katha and then led a beautiful kirtan that truly set the mood,” said Keshavananda.

On the day of the Rathayatra, the city came alive. The chariot, freshly cleaned, painted, and decorated with flower garlands by the matajis, moved gracefully through a new, busier route in the city. “The kirtan was ecstatic,” Keshavananda said. “Cars stopped, pedestrians paused, and people leaned out of windows, curious and captivated.”
