It’s written by Srila Narottama Dasa Thakur. We sang this song this morning, right after mangala-arati. So in the class also, because it is the day of celebrating the disappearance of three very exalted devotees, acaraya’s we will sing that song. And that is why, since today is the disappearance celebration of these personalities, we don’t have any particular verse, but we will speak on the lives of these personalities. I read the translation of this song first or I’ll go stanza by stanza :Je anilo prema-dhana koruna pracurHeno prabhu kotha gela acarya-thakurHe who brought the treasure of divine love and who was filled with compassion and mercy — where has such a personality as Srinivasa Acarya gone?As I mentioned, it was written by Narottama Dasa Thakur when Srinivasa Acarya left this planet. They were very close frieds, they were very, very intimate associates of each other. And when Srinivasa Acarya left, Narottama Dasa Thakur was so heart-broken that he expressed his agony through this song.kaha mora swarup rupa kaha sanatankaha dasa raghunatha patita-pavanWhere are my Svarupa Damodara and Rupa Gosvami? Where is Sanatana? Where is Raghunatha dasa, the savior of the fallen?kaha mora bhatta-juga kaha kavirajeka-kale kotha gela gora nata-rajWhere are my Raghunatha Bhatta and Gopala Bhatta, and where is Krsnadasa Kaviraja? Where did Lord Gauranga, the great dancer, suddenly go?pasane kutibo matha anale pasibogauranga gunera nidhi kotha gele paboI will smash my head against the rock and enter into the fire. Where will I find Lord Gauranga, the reservoir of all wonderful qualities?se-saba sangira sange je koilo bilasse-sanga na paiya kande narottama dasBeing unable to obtain the association of Lord Gauranga accompanied by all of these devotees in whose association He performed His pastimes, Narottama dasa simply weeps.ye anilo prema-dhana koruna pracurheno prabhu kotha gela acarya-thakur.kaha mora swarup rupa kaha sanatankaha dasa raghunatha patita-pavan.kaha mora bhatta-juga kaha kavirajeka-kale kotha gela gora nata-raj.pasane kutibo matha anale pasibogauranga gunera nidhi kotha gele pabo.se-saba sangira sange je koilo bilasse-sanga na paiya kande narottama das.Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare HareHare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare HareJaya PrabhupadaJaya Tamal Krishna Gosvami MaharajaJaya Jagannatha Dasa Babaji MaharajaJaya Rasikananda PrabhuNitai-Gaura HaribolNamah Om Vishnu Padaya Krishna Presthaya BhutaleSrimate Bhaktivedanta Swami Iti NamineNamaste Sarasvate Deve Gaura Vani PracarineNirvisesa Sunyavadi Pascatya Desa TarineSri Krishna Chaitanya Prabhu NityanandaSri Advaita Gadadhara Srivasa Adi Gaura Bhakta VrindaHare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare HareHare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare HareAs I mentioned earlier, today is the disappearance day of His Divine Grace Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaj, Srila Jagannath Dasa Maharaja and Srila Rasikananda Prabhu. I will briefly speak about Tamal Krishna Maharaja first and then I will try to discuss the glorious lives of two acaryas in our sampradaya, Srila Jagannath Das Maharaj and Srila Rasikananda Prabhu. Today also we will have a memorial ceremony of Tamal Krishna Maharaja starting at 10 o’clock. We are very fortunate to have amidst us Tamal Krishna Maharaj’s younger brother Carl and his wife and son. And Carl will speak on Tamal Krishna Maharaja’s glories and also many other senior devotees will speak on Tamala Krishna Maharaja. I remember after Tamal Krishna Maharaja’s disappearance we had a memorial ceremony of Tamal Krishna Maharaja’s Govardhan where Maharaja used to spend a lot of time. Carl was also there at that time and he gave such a moving description of his relationship with Tamal Krishna Maharaja and how Tamal Krishna Maharaja affected his life that I couldn’t resist the urge to just run up to the stage and embrace him. So I am sure we will also have such a wonderful experience today.I am sure in Iskcon everyone knows Tamal Krishna Maharaja. He was a very, very special devotee. I am sure that those who are well acquainted with Iskcon, know that when Srila Prabhupada came, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had sent many devotees to assist Srila Prabhupada. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had planted these devotees in different parts of the world especially in America. Srila Prabhupada himself admitted that, that Mahaprabhu sent these devotees to assist him in his preaching mission to spread Krishna consciousness all over the world, fulfilling Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s prediction. And Tamal Krishna Maharaja undoubtedly is one of the leading ones of those associates, eternal associates of Srila Prabhupada.Tamal Krsna Maharaja was born in 1946 in New York City and he grew up like many other Americans of that time, but from his childhood he stood up as a very, very special personality, very special boy, and like other American youth, thoughtful, intelligent American youth of those days in the mid-sixties, Tamal Krsna Maharaja also became disillusioned with the existing American society, intensely materialistic American society. In the height of material prosperity, the youth of America became totally disillusioned with their materialistic way of life and they started to search for a positive alternative and a counter culture. And like many other youth of America Tamal Krsna Maharaja left home and went to San Fransisco which was the place for the young Americans of that time. And he was not even like the ordinary, other Americans who were just hanging out in Golden Gate Park and that Haight Ashbury area of San Fransisco. But Tamala Krsna Goswami Maharaja actually went to the Redwood forest and he was living there with a group of young boys and girls. And once he mentioned that he used to live in the hollow of a redwood tree. There was no home or even cottages just in a hollow of a redwood tree. The redwood tree is huge and sometimes there is some cavity in the tree, so he was living there. And Srila Prabhupada went to that place, when Prabhupada was invited to that community where this group of young boys and girls were living, Srila Prabhupada accepted their invitation and went there. And just one visit was good enough to attract Tamala Krsna Maharaja, Visnujana Maharaja and Gaurahari Prabhu. The three of them became attracted to Srila Prabhupada and they left the community and went to Los Angeles and joined Srila Prabhupada and Srila Prabhupada recognized him right from the beginning and Tamala Krsna Maharaja became a very, very intimate associate of Srila Prabhupada.Tamal Krsna Maharaja became the temple president of the temple that was established in Los Angeles area and then Prabhupada actually sent him to various other missions like when the movement started to develop in England in London, due to the wonderful endeavour of Mother Malati and her husband Syamasundara Prabhu, Gurudas Prabhu, Mother Yamuna, Mukunda Maharaja and Janaki Mataji. These three couples actually went to London and started the movement there. And it was due to their intense, sincere endeavour, the movement started to flourish, George Harrison became attracted to this movement and he became a follower of Srila Prabhupada. And Srila Prabhupada sent Tamal Krsna Maharaja to London to assist in Sankirtan because Tamal Krsna Maharaja was an outstanding Sankirtan devotee. He was an exceptional organiser and then he went to France, he went to Germany and then Prabhupada sent him to India and for some years Tamal Krsna Maharaja was a GBC, I think from 1970 till 1974 Tamal Krsna Maharaja was the GBC of India. It is Tamal Krsna Maharaja who actually acquired this piece of land in Mayapur where we are sitting today.[applause] It was not easy to get the land because some individuals were against Srila Prabhupada’s coming to Mayapur and establishing the Krsna consciousness movement here. And many devotees tried and failed it was a very difficult job like we didn’t really have any setup here and Srila Prabhupada couldn’t really trust anybody with this assignment, I mean local people from Calcutta, Mayapur nobody was actually supporting Srila Prabhupada or helping Srila Prabhupada, rather they went against Srila Prabhupada. Tamal Krsna Maharaja was so intelligent he got one person, made a separate arrangement with him, without letting anybody know. He came here with a lawyer, sat under a banyan tree outside the road there was a banyan tree, just next to the land and he signed the contract there, and that is how the land was acquired. He mentioned to me once that he arrived in Calcutta quite late at night after completing this assignment and Prabhupada was still awake. Prabhupada was waiting for him and Prabhupada was so pleased when he got the land. (Jaya Sri Sri Radha Madhava ki jay!) So in this way Tamal Krsna Maharaja had so many wonderful achievements and the way he assisted Srila Prabhupada in such a wonderful way. It is a pity that when our movement was really craving for his involvement, Tamal Krsna Maharaja just left.Sometimes it appears or rather not only sometimes, it actually appeared that Tamal Krsna Maharaja left his body through an accident. But no, it was not that he left his body in an accident, Tamal Krishna knew that he was going to leave. There are many devotees who actually have that experience, I’ll also relate one experience that I had about Tamal Krsna Maharaja being aware of his departure from this world, that he was going to leave his body, but before I get into that I will also mention Visvambara Prabhu who is also here, he mentioned he was packing Tamal Krsna Maharaja’s suitcase before he was leaving in the morning. Was it in the morning or at night? At night. At night he was packing, Tamal Krsna Maharaja just told him he was leaving. But he thought he was leaving maybe but he kept on emphasizing that he was leaving as if he knew that he was leaving, not to come back. Anyway, I will request Visvambara Prabhu to narrate that anecdote when we get together for Tamal Krsna Maharaja’s memorial ceremony. I also had a similar experience. Actually the day he left, in the morning I did not meet with him, I did not see him. The day before that we all went to Calcutta, Jayapataka Maharaja, Gopal Krsna Maharaja and myself, we went to Calcutta to meet the Police Commissioner about Calcutta Temple. So we had a very important meeting, Devakinandana Prabhu also was there with us in that meeting. So, we came back very late and when I woke up Tamal Krsna Maharaja already left, he left right after Mangala arati. But three days before he left I was chanting with him in his room, he used to pace up and down and chant and I was chanting with him and at one point he just told me “You take care of these boys in Calcutta” he meant his disciples in Calcutta. Quite a few young very bright young boys took initiation from Tamal Krsna Maharaja and Tamal Krishna Maharaja was telling me about them and was telling me “Please take care of them”. I said “Sure, I will”. Then he said, “You’re their father”. I said, “No, I am the uncle, you are the father”. He said, “No, you are the father”. At that time generally, we consider that the initiating spiritual master, is the father and the Godbrothers are the uncles, but he kept on insisting and later on it occurred to me why he was speaking like that. Anyway there are many such incidences which made us realize that Tamal Krishna Maharaja knew that he was leaving his body. Also another important information regarding this is that the autopsy report actually mentioned that Tamal Krishna Maharaja left his body before the accident took place. So, at least for me it is a clear indication that he left due to some divine arrangement of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Srila Prabhupada. A personality like this, being such an intimate associate of Srila Prabhupada must have been called back by Srila Prabhupada to assist him in some other mission that Srila Prabhupada is involved in, in another planet or maybe in the spiritual sky. His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja ki jai! Srila Tamal Krishna Maharaja’s Thiro Bhava Tithi Mahotsava ki jai! Gaura premanande, Hari Haribol!Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj is our Param Gurudeva. Srila Prabhupada’s spiritual master was Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura’s spiritual master was Gaurakisora Dasa Babaji Maharaja. Gaurakisora Dasa Babaji Maharaja’s siksa guru was Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur. And Bhaktivinoda Thakura considered Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaj to be his spiritual master. The exact date of his appearance is not known but he appeared some time in around 1750. He was born in the eastern part of Bengal, which is now Bangladesh. There is a the district Maimamsi. In the district Maimamsi there is one village called Tangail. So in that village he appeared in a very aristocratic family. From his childhood he was very attracted to Krishna. When he grew up he left home and he went to Vrndavan and he used to spend his time in Vrindavana, in the forest. From his early days he was a bajanandi, completely absorbed in chanting the Holy Name. There he came across Srila Madhusudan Das Babaji Maharaj who was a disciple of Uddhava Das who was a grand-disciple of Baladeva Vidyabhusana. Baladeva Vidyabusana is our prominent acarya in our sampradaya. He has many wonderful achievements. Baladeva Vidyabhusana’ disciple was Uddhava Dasa Babaji. Uddhava Das Babji was a disciple of Madhusudana Dasa Babaji and he was the [inaudible] guru that means that he gave him paramahamsa stage. In this way Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaj spent many many years in Vrindavan and then in 1880 Bhaktivinode Thakur came to Vrindavan and there he met Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja, And right from the first meeting Bhaktivinode Thakur became extremely attached to him and Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja seeing his intense urge to preach, he was very inspired and he blessed him and he instructed him on the teachings of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Then Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja came to a place called Amlajora in Bengal. He left Vrindavan and he must have been over hundred and thirty years at that time. If he was born around 1750 and it was around 1880. So he was almost a hundred and thirty years or in his hundred and thirty years. He was very, very old and he came to Amlayora. And his intention actually was to come to Navadvipa. Because we notice that Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj and Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj, both of them were in Vrindavan but at some point they left Vrindavan and came to Navadwip. And then in 1893 Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaj came to Navadwipa, on the other side of the Ganges, in place called Kuliya. Actually, his accomodation was meant to be in a very prominent math, ashram there. Jagannatha Das Babji Maharaj did not want to go there. His servant Bihari was with him and Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja told him that he wanted to stay under a tree. So he decided to stay under a tree. And he stayed there under the tree on the bank of the Ganges. And then one very wealthy person Madhava Datta,- when he met Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaj he became so impressed that he bought that land for him. So he came and he purchased the land and then Bhaktivinoda Thakur built two huts there for Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja to stay. So that is how it developed which is the present day math of Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja. During the parikrama you will visit that place. So Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj became very, very affectionate towards Bhaktivinode Thakur. Bhaktivinoda Thakur became very attached to Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaj. Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaja then came to Bhaktivinoda Thakuras house on the other side of the river Jalangi. At around that time Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur discovered Mayapura. Originally, those days people were thinking, people were under the impression that the birth place of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu that is Mayapur was on the other side of the river Ganges. Still today, they maintain their claim that, that is actual Mayapur. They call it Pracin Mayapur or Old Mayapur, this is New Mayapur. It is not that… This is the original Mayapur. Bhaktivinoda Thakur actually got a divine vision, one night. He saw this particular Yoga-Pitha area on this side of the river Jalangi lit up with light and he saw a city there and he saw devotees from all different parts of the world chanting and dancing in ecstasy. So after getting that vision Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur actually came, the next morning and he found a Neem tree and there were many, many Tulasi trees around that Neem tree and he could recognize that that is the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. So this way, through his vision he could discover the original birthplace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu but to actually confirm that this is the birth place of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu he got Jagannatha Dasa Babji Maharaj to come there. At that time Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaj was more than hundred and forty years old. He was about hundred and forty four years old at that time and he couldn’t walk. You can well imagine, a hundred and forty-four year old person he couldn’t walk. Biharie, he had a servant who was very strong. When Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja used to go to some place, then Biharie used to put him in a basket and he used to carry him on a basket on his head. That is how he used to carry him from place to place. Biharie brought Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja to the place that Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura identified as the birthplace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja coming there, his body was kind of folded practically, he and bent with age. But when he arrived there he just stood up. It has been described his body was well over six feet, he was dancing in ecstasy, jumping high up in the air, saying, “This is the birthplace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu! This is the birthplace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu! Eta Mahaprabhu janma [inaudible]. Eta Mahaprabhu janma [inaudible]. That’s why Jaganath Das Babji Maharaja’s prayer goes like : gauravirbhava-bhumes tvam nirdesta saj-jana-priyah vaisnava sarvabhaumah sri jagannathaya te namah gauravirbhava-bhumes tvam, the personality who identified, nirdesta, he actually pointed it out that this is the birthplace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Jagannath das Babaji Maharaja identified the birthplace of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and he is the Vaisnava sarvabhaumah, he is the monarch of the Vaisnava world. In the kingdom of Vaisnavas, he is the sarvabhaumah. Sarvabhaumah means in Sanskrit, there are different designations for a king. A superior to a king is a samraga and above the samraga is sarvabhaumah, who is the one predominating ruler of the sampradaya. So that is how Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja has been identified. There are some very, very interesting anecdotes in Srila Jagannath Dasa Babaji Maharaj life. One important thing is, when Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaj came here Bhaktivinoda Thakur was a young man at that time and Jagannatha das Babaji Maharaj got to know that he was a very accomplished astrologer. He was a very, very well known scholar of astrology. The astrological society of India inferred the title of Siddhanta Sarasvati to him at that time. This Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakur has something to do with that title that he received. Siddhanta Sarasvati but then it was an astrological consideration. Later on his name had been identified the spiritual siddhanta, the Vedic siddhanta, Vaisnava Siddhanta Sarasvati which is the bhakti. So Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaja actually told Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakur to write a Vaisnava calendar, calculate the Vaishnava calender according to the Vaishnava calculation of astrology. There is a little difference between smarta calculation and Vaishnava calculation or Gosvami calculation. That was the cause of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur writing the Gaudya Pancikam, [inaudible]I will briefly just mention one or two anecdotes. One anecdote is very beautiful. One day some very rich man came to see Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaj along with his family. His name was Srinath Rai. He was king, king means a big landlord, a very wealthy landlord. So he came to see Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaj here in Kuliya, Navadvipa. He was very impressed to see Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj being so humble, he came and asked him, he addressed him as siddha baba – that perfected soul, which in that way Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj was known at that time. But generally Jagannatha das Babaji Maharaja’s response was. No, no, I am just an ordinary person. So he was very impressed. Then at one time he told Jagannath dasa Babaji Maharaj to perform some miracle. Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj said : Look I can’t perform any miracle [inaudible]. But then something happened, Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaj picked a stick and with the stick he started to hit the ground. The person became very worried. He thought that Babji Maharaj was so upset with him, that’s why he is reacting in this way. So he started to beg apology from him, that please forgive me if I have wronged. He said, No. It is not that. One goat has entered into Lokanath Goswami bhajan kutir and is eating the Tulasi so I am try to get rid of it. So that man out of curiosity he sent a return-telegram to Radhakunda and at that time, the reply came, that at around that time a goat really walked into Lokanath Swami’s bhajan kutir asrama and it was eating the Tulasi plants there. Jagannath das Babaji Maharaja, sitting in Navadvipa, he was driving the goat out of Lokanath Goswamis bhajan kutir in Radhakunda, in Vrindavana.Another very merciful display of… Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj was very old and he could barely eat. A female dog gave birth to five puppies. When Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj used to eat, these puppies used to come and sit around his plate. Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj used to give them the food. So Bihari, Jagannath das Babaji Maharaja’s servant became very concerned about that. He did not like these dogs and Jagannatha das Babaji Maharaja was reacting to them in such a way. Dogs are considered to be unclean animals. So one day he actually took those puppies away at the time of Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja’s prasadam time. When Jagannatha das Babaji Maharaja saw that the puppies were not, he just called Bihari and said, “Take this plate away! Take this plate away!” Bihari said, “What happened ?” Jagannatha Das Babaji Maharaj said, “Where are the puppies? Where are the puppies?” (Laughter.) So then Bihari brought the puppies to Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja and then Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja told him that, “These are not ordinary dogs. These are the dogs of the Holy Dhama.” Srila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaj ki jai!!!Rasikananda Prabhu was an exceptionally, brilliant personality. He was born in a Roy family, in a place called Royna, which is in the Midnapur district in southwest Bengal. He was an extremely handsome person and extremely learned and he became interested in spiritual life at a young age. Bhakti-ratnaka describes that when he became so intensely interested in spiritual life then there was a divine voice from the sky announcing, “Don’t worry, Soon your spiritual master will come and claim you.” And true to that divine celestial voice, very soon a great Vaisnava came to that place in Royna. That was Shyamananda Prabhu. Shyamananda Prabhu was a disciple of Hridaya Caitanya Prabhu and he was a siksa disciple of Jiva Goswami.I mentioned about Srinivasa Acarya, Narottama Dasa Thakura and Syamananda Prabhu. These three personalities were the stalwart acaryas after the Goswamis. After Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu left, Nityananda Prabhu continued preaching in Bengal and this part of India and the Goswamis were writing books and absorbed in bhajanananda in Vrindavana. After Nityananda Prabhu, Jahnava Mata was preaching. She became the head of the community, of the Vaisnava samaja. Then the Goswamis also were considered to be THE stalwart acaryas and after that these three personalities were most prominent – Srinivasa Acarya, Narottama Dasa Thakura and Shyamananda Prabhu. So Syamananda Prabhu just as they met – Shyamananda Prabhu met Rasikananda Prabhu he became very, it was obvious that they were just waiting for each other. Immediately Rasikananda surrendered, and Shyamananda accepted him and he gave him initiation and although he was a prince, but he was not at all interested in his royal affairs. He just kept on travelling with his guru from that time on and he was a brilliant preacher, an exceptionally brilliant preacher. Many kings became affected by his preaching and became his disciples, Rasikananda Prabhu’s disciples, not only the kings, even the daicoits became his disciples. Muslims became his disciple. So many, many people became his disciple. A wave of Vaishnava culture actually was inundating Bengal at that time and Orissa. Shyamananda Prabhu mainly preached in Orissa. And all these kings that I mentioned, the king of [inaudible] became his disciples the king of Maina, in this way a few kings became his disciples and they turned the kingdom into a vaishnava kingdom. In this way he was preaching most effectively. And the whole of Orissa was very much effected by his preaching. At that time, during the muslim attack the pujaris hid the Deity of Gopinatha in a pond and they ran away. Because they were afraid that the Muslims would come and break the temple, not the muslims. There was parson, a Hindu king who actually became a convert and he actually started to break the Deities. Due to their fear they ran away and they kept the Deity there. Rasikananda Prabhu had a dream that Gopinatha was telling him that He was there in that pond. Rasikananda Prabhu came, went to Remuna. From the pond he actually discovered, retrieved and reinstated the Deity in the temple. And from that time onwards he just stayed there in Remuna. And for many years he stayed there. One day he was leading, dancing in kirtan while his disciples were chantingwith mrdanga and kartals and at that time Rasikananda Prabhu entered into the temple and he disappeared at the lotusfeet of Gopinatha, Kir Chora Gopinatha. And when his disciples realized that he left, they stopped their kirtanas and they dropped their mrdangas and kartals and they also dropped their bodies, and all seven of them they left their bodies… Rasikananda’s samadhi is not there because his body was not there. But his pushpa samadhi is there along with his associates’, these seven devotees who also left their bodies along with him.Srila Rasikananda Prabhu ki jaya !Srila Rasikananda Prabhu’s Disappearance celebration ki jaya !Gaura Premanande!Srila Prabhupada ki jay!So, I will stop now. The GBC members have their meeting at ten o’clockSo I will not invite any questions. And there are no questions to ask also.Applause.His Holiness Bhakti Caru Swami Ki Jaya!
