Top Cop Refuses To Accept

Hare Krishna Movement

Hare Krishna ,

All Glories To Srila Prabhupada ,

This Gaur Purnima , the auspicious appearance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, I was scheduled to meet a top cop, who holds one of the top three designations in the hierarchy of Mumbai Police. It was a scheduled meeting and he had taken time out to meet me on a public holiday. After our discussion concluded, I thanked him for taking out time to meet me on a holiday and presented a copy of our popular newspaper The Hare Krishna Revolution. He reached out and had a cursory look at it and superficially complimented me for doing the good work and handed back the paper saying, “I do not have the time to read it.” I insisted that he should keep it and read a little bit of it during spare time. But he flatly refused saying that he had no interest in reading such literature.

I was neither surprised nor dejected by this kind of a categorical refusal because I knew that he was not interested in spirituality. Kunti Maharani, the mother of the Pandavas, has rightly said that those who are bestowed with high social position, aristocratic birth, material opulence, high education and beautiful bodily features cannot take to the process of Krishna consciousness because they are intoxicated by such material assets. Only a person without any material possessions, akincana, can approach Krishna. The top cop held an exalted position in the Police Force by dint of his high education. Due to this he commanded respect in Society and had all the comforts and opulence. The mentality of such a person is that he thinks God to be a fictitious person who is simply an invention of those who are unsuccessful and devoid of ability.

Such so-called successful persons do not know that only the most intelligent take to the path of God-consciousness. Since they are always praised by one and all as nobody would want to invite the ire of a powerful man, such persons start thinking that they do not need God and some of them start believing that they themselves are God. They have a misconception that God is meant for poor people who go to beg from him. Since they are capable enough, they do not need God.

Therefore Queen Kunti prayed that the Lord may bestow calamities upon her so that she may remember Him and if one remembers Krishna, then there is no chance of a rebirth. Rebirth means misery in the form of disease, old age and ultimately death. One can stop re-birth by accepting the Hare Krishna Revolution but those who have attained a so-called good birth become so attached to their miserable births that they want such miserable births again and again.

Ye hi samsparsa ja bhoga duhkha yonaya eva te:An intelligent person does not take part in the sources of misery, which are due to contact with the material senses. O son of Kunti, such pleasures have a beginning and an end, and so the wise man does not take delight in them.”
