The Butter Thief

there's nothing in the world so sweet
as Krishna's early childhood play
please hear this transcendental treat
and let it take your heart away

intended to invoke our love
and leave our sorrows far behind
inviting us to rise above
the plane of our conditioned mind

when Krishna was a little child
He was a naughty cowherd boy
He liked to play and always smiled
to spread around His bliss and joy

surrendered to His mother's care
Yasoda Mata was her name
He happily engaged to share
His glory and His widespread fame

partaking with His dearmost friends
and with His brother Balaram
a higher taste that never ends
within the land of Vraja Dham

together they would go around
to steal some butter, milk or curd
they did their best to make no sound
and thus took care that no one heard

they used to enter through the yard
the houses of the neighbours
who did their best to safely guard
the fruit of their hard labours

they put the butter into pots
and hung them from the ceiling
they had arranged these special spots
to keep the boys from stealing

but Balaram and Krsna would
just make a pile of wooden planks
continuing until it stood
supported well on all it's flanks

to shield the butter from the light
it rested in a darkened space
but like the shining stars at night
Their jewels would glow up the place

Lord Krishna has a dark blue skin
His face is like a lotus flower
His ecstacy resides within
the fountain of His mystic power

attractively adorned with pearls
superbly dressed in yellow silk
He would enchant the cowherd girls
but after that He stole their milk

they told Yasoda their complaints
your boys have left us all bereft
They do Their best to act like saints
but meanwhile They engage in theft

explaining thus Their sneaky style
the cowherd girls were all upset
but Krishna would just show His smile
and then they simply would forget

He went out with His friends one day
together with His brother
when they returned back from their play
the boys addressed His mother

your Krishna has been eating earth!
Yasoda then picked up her son
she found His health of utmost worth
and asked Him sternly what He'd done

while looking at her fearful eyes
our Krishna smiled and then spoke out
My mother, these are all just lies!
look in My mouth and clear your doubt

Yasoda then looked in His mouth
and saw the whole creation
in all directions, north to south
and felt a strange sensation

she realized and understood
her son's divine position
but then recalled her motherhood
and turned back to her mission

these brilliant pastimes He performs
reveal His personality
surpassing all the mundane norms
the core of His reality

now may this nourish your belief
and let it never fall apart
just keep in mind this butter thief
and let Him steal away your heart
