Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Mathajis,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

In this world, day in and day out we all face miseries - either due to bodily problems, natural calamities or other living entities. The pain and suffering that we undergo due to these problems are intolerable. How to overcome these sufferings and pains ? In Srimad Bhagavatam, while explaining the glories of Lord's lotus feet to Narada Muni, Lord Brahma gives us the solution for all our problems. The miseries from our body and miseries due to other living entities are primarily because of misuse of our senses, particularly our mouth (both in case of speech and food we take). Lord Brahma compassionately shares the secret of his bliss. In Srimad Bhagavatam verses 2.6.34, he says - "O Narada, because I have caught hold of the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, with great zeal, whatever I say has never proved to have been false. Nor is the progress of my mind ever deterred. Nor are my senses ever degraded by temporary attachment to matter. " He further explains the glories of holding on to Lord's lotus feet in verse 2.6.36 of Srimad Bhagavatam as follows.

nato 'smy aham tac-caranam sameeyushaam
bhavac-chidam svasty-ayanam sumangalam
yo hy aatma-maayaa-vibhavam sma paryagaad
yathaa nabhah svaantam athaapare kutah

"Therefore it is best for me to surrender unto His feet, which alone can deliver one from the miseries of repeated birth and death. Such surrender is all-auspicious and allows one to perceive all happiness. Even the sky cannot estimate the limits of its own expansion. So what can others do when the Lord Himself is unable to estimate His own limits?"

The word "sameeyushaam" (meaning - of the surrendered soul) in the above verse is worth meditating. Many a times when we offer dandavats to deities, our body just falls down mechanically without surrendering ourselves to Him. That is why we continue to drown more and more in this overwhelming ocean of material miseries. The moment we surrender to Him whole heartedly, then bhava-chidam will happen. Lord Krishna will stop our repeated cycle of birth and death. Also the surrendering process itself is auspicious and blissful. We will surrender only when we realise the reality that we are very very insignificant and that the Lord is so great and glorious. In the last line of this verse very nicely compares with sky. Just like how we cannot estimate the limits of sky, nor does sky know its limits, similarly Lord's glories are immeasurable that He Himself cannot estimate His own limits. It is said that Ananthadev with his millions of hoods has been chanting the glories of the Lord for millions of years. But is still not completed chanting all His names and glories ? So what to speak of tiny entities like us with one mouth ?

In his purport to the above verse Srila Prabhupada very nicely comments about the beauty of spiritual happiness. He says - "That spiritual happiness is so great that it cannot be measured, even by the Lord Himself, not to speak of others. So the happiness derived from the Lord may be measured by the Lord, but the happiness increases again, and the Lord measures it again, and then again the happiness increases more and more, and the Lord measures it more and more, and as such there is eternally a competition between increment and measurement, so much so that the competition is never stopped, but goes on unlimitedly ad infinitum. Spiritual happiness is aanandaambudhi-vardhanam, or the ocean of happiness which increases."

Krishna never wants us to suffer. Like a loving parent, our Supreme Father has insisted this same surrender process in Bhagavad Gita. He knows that this material world is fearful and horrible place for us. And that is why He is giving us the solution in Bhagavad Gita as - "sarva dharmaan parityajya maam ekam sharanam vraja". It is worth remembering that Lord Ganesha is always holding on to the lotus feet of Lord Govinda and is there-by empowered to remove the obstacles in the path of progress. In Brahma Samhita verse 5.50 Lord Brahma says,

yat-paada-pallava-yugam vinidhaaya kumbha
dvandve pranaama-samaye sa ganaadhiraajah
vighnaan vihantum alam asya jagat-trayasya
govindam aadi-purusham tam aham bhajaami

"I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, whose lotus feet are always held by Ganesha upon the pair of tumuli protruding from his elephant head in order to obtain power for his function of destroying all the obstacles on the path of progress of the three worlds."

So let us take lessons from such great devotees like Lord Brahma, Lord Ganesha and whole-heartedly surrender unto the lotus feet of Supreme Lord Govinda. By surrendering and rendering service unto Him, we will be able to gain strength to face the miseries of this world and also experience spiritual bliss.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Kalacakra Krsna das and Sudarshana devi dasi.
