Before reciting Bhagavatam, one should offer respectful obeisances unto the Personality of Godhead Narayana, unto Nara Narayana Rsi - the supermost human being, unto Mother Saraswati - the goddess of learning and unto Vyasadeva the author.

By regularly listening to the classes on Bhagavatam and rendering pure service unto the devotees, all that is troublesome to the heart is completely destroyed and the loving service unto the Personality of Godhead springs and the transcendental sound is established. This is an irrevocable fact.

Hare Krsna

So, we are reading today from Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 8 chapter 22 entitled Bali Maharaj surrendered his life.

We are going to do text number 2 since there is no purport for text number 1.

I'm going to read the summary of chapter 22 and then we will do the text number 2.

Bali Maharaj surrenders his life.

Summary - The Supreme Personality of Godhead was pleased by the behaviour of Bali Maharaj. Thus the lord placed him on the planet Sutala and thereafter bestowing benedictions upon him, the lord agreed to become his doorman. Bali Maharaj was extremely truthful. Being unable to keep his promise he was afraid for he knew that one who has pride of truthfulness is insignificant in the eyes of society and the exalted persons can suffer the consequences of hellish life. But he is very much afraid of being defamed of the deviation from the truth. Bali Maharaj agreed with great pleasure to accept the punishment awarded by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In Bali Maharaj's dynasty there were many asuras who had achieved destinations more exalted than that of many mystic yogis. Bali Maharaj specifically remembered the determination of Prahlad Maharaj in devotional service. Considering all these points, he decided to give his head as charity to Vishnu as His third step. Bali Maharaj also considered many exalted devotees who had given up their family relationships and material possessions to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Indeed they sometimes sacrificed their lives for the satisfaction of the Lord. Accordingly by following in the footsteps of the previous acharyas and devotees, Bali Maharaj perceived himself as successful. While Bali Maharaj was being arrested by the ropes of Varuna, he was offering prayers to the lord and his grandfather Prahlad Maharaj appeared there and described how the Supreme Personality of Godhead had delivered Bali Maharaj by taking away his possessions in a tricky way. While Prahlad Maharaj was present, Lord Brahma and Bali's wife Vindhyawali described the supremacy of the Supreme Lord. Since Bali Maharaj had given everything to the Lord, they prayed for his release. The lord then described how a non devotee in possession of wealth is a danger whereas a devotee's opulence is a benediction from the Lord. Then, pleased with Bali Maharaj, the Supreme Lord offered him His disc to protect Bali Maharaj and promised to remain with him.

Text no 1 is
Sri Suka uvaca
Translation - O King, although the Supreme Personality of Godhead was superficially seen to have acted mischievously towards Bali Maharaj, Bali Maharaj was fixed in his determination. Considering himself not to have fulfilled his promise, he spoke as follows.

Now Bali Maharaj is speaking which is on text no 2

sri balir uvaca
yady uttamasloka bhavan

vaco vyalikam sura-varya manyate
karomy rtam tan na bhavet
pralambhanam

śrī-baliḥ uvāca — Bali Mahārāja said; yadi — if; uttamaśloka — O Supreme Lord; bhavān — Your good self; mama — my; īritam — promised; vacaḥ — words; vyalīkam— false; sura-varya — O greatest of all suras (demigods); manyate — You think so; karomi — I shall make it; ṛtam — truth; tat — that (promise); na — not; bhavet — will become; pralambhanam — cheating; padam — step; tṛtīyam — the third; kuru — just do it; śīrṣṇi — on the head; me — my; nijam — Your lotus feet

Translation and Purport by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada ki jai!!

Translation
Bali Maharaj said - O best Personality of Godhead, most worshippable by all the demigods, if You think that my promise has become false, I shall certainly rectify matters to make it truthful. I cannot allow my promise to be false. Please therefore place Your third lotus footstep on my head.

Purport
Bali Maharaj could understand the pretense of Lord Vamanadeva who had taken the side of the demigods and came before him as a beggar. Although the Lord's purpose was to cheat him, Bali Maharaj took pleasure in understanding how the Lord will cheat His devotee to glorify the devotee's position. It is said that God is good and if this is a fact that whether He cheats or rewards, He is always good. Bali Maharaj therefore addressed Him as Uttamasloka. ' Your Lordship' he said is always praised with the best of the selected verses. On behalf of the demigods, You disguised Yourself to cheat me, saying that You wanted only three paces of land. But later You expanded Your body to such an extent that with two footsteps you covered the entire universe. Because You were working on behalf of Your devotees, You do not regard this as cheating. Never mind. I cannot be considered a devotee .Nonetheless although You are the husband of the goddess of fortune You have come to me to beg. I must satisfy You to the best of my ability. So please do not think that I wanted to cheat You ; I must fulfill my promise. I still have one possession, my body. You have taken my wealth but I still have my body. When I place my body for Your satisfaction please put Your third step on my head. Since the lord had covered the entire universe with two steps, one might ask how Bali Maharaj's head could be sufficient for His third step? Bali Maharaj however thought that the possessor of wealth must be greater than the possession. Therefore although the Lord had taken all his possessions, the head of Bali Maharaj, the possessor, would provide adequate place for the Lord's third step.

So, here is given wonderful description about the wonderful pastimes of Bali Maharaj and Lord Vamanadeva. So this is  wonderful Vamana caritra. And in the end of this chapter they give you what is a sruti phala. Means what is the benediction, what is the ashirwaad one will get if you hear this Vamana caritra. And that ashirwaad is very important for all of us, all the devotees particularly in the line of Gaudiya Vaishnava devotees. I will also read that after completing this one. Now this particular place where this happened is called bhrigu kacha. This is in the north of Narmada river where Bali Maharaj was conducting this sacrifice called Ashwamedha yajna, horse sacrifice. He was performing this sacrifice. And then he engaged all the dynasty of bhrigu priest headed by Sukracarya. He had given that assignment to all the bhrigu dynasty brahmins.

So, today morning I'm going to discuss what are the lessons we learn? What are the teachings that we can learn from this particular pastime? Because in Bhagavatam wherever you go, wherever some caritra is given, there are some teachings, there are some lessons, some kind of understanding we get from that caritra, from that pastimes. That's what I'm going to talk about this morning.

So Bali Maharaj is considered to be an exalted devotee . There are three kinds of exalted devotees.
One is Nitya Siddha. Another is sadhana siddha and the third one is Krupa siddha.

This Nitya siddha is eternally siddha. We are not going to talk about that. We are going to talk about the other two sadhana siddha and Krupa siddha.

So, sadhana siddha is by performing devotional service one achieves that perfection and the best example is who? What is the best example? The Sadhana siddha Bhakta is Narada Muni. Narada Muni was a simple boy in his previous life. Because he performed the wonderful service and because he had the wonderful association of devotees - the sadhus, he attained perfection and he became a Krupa siddha and then finally he became a liberated soul.

Here we are talking about Krupa siddha. Krupa Siddha is Bali Maharaj and how he became Krupa siddha? He got Krupa because of  his grandfather. His grandfather was Prahlad Maharaj and his father's name was Virochana. So he got Krupa from his father Prahlad Maharaj. So that Krupa is due to his grandfather Prahlad Maharaj.

Prahlad Maharaj was very favored by Lord Nrsimhadev. Lord Nrsimhadev said that I'm so obliged by your devotion, Prahlad that I'll not kill anybody in your lineage. I'll give benediction to everyone even though they are born in the demon family. That's the benediction one gets you know. Bhakti ki Shakti hai usme. Because of PrahlaMaharaj, Bali Maharaj became Krupa siddha Bhakta.

We can see the same concept in Ramanujacharya sampradaya. In Ramanujacharya sampradaya there are two schools of thoughts. One is vadakelay and other is thanakelay.

This vadakelay what they do is this sadhana siddha and Krupa siddha. This vadakelay is a school of monkeys and cats. Markatt and billi. Vadakelay sadhana means the sadhana of monkey and baby monkey. So what happens in that is devotees have to endeavor like how a monkey has to carry baby monkey on its back. The baby monkey has to make the endeavor to cling. So, he has to do that endeavor. Like in a sadhana siddha he has to do the endeavor. If the baby falls the mother will not accept the baby again. The baby has to cling because what happens is that monkey jumps from one tree to another tree all the time with the baby.

But in a thanakelay it's called the sadhana of a cat and a kitten. What happens with the cat and the kitten? The cat carries the kitten. The kitten doesn't have to do any endeavor. When the cat carries the kitten, it carries very nicely. The kitten doesn't get hurt. Do you understand?

The same concept. There are many teachings that we learn from this caritra. One is. In hindi you say, Aapko agar Viraat ban na Hai to pehle aap vaman bano. Vaman became virat right. Agar Aapko Viraat banna hai Krsna consciousness mein then first you have to become Vamana. You have to be humble.

Trinadapi sunicena taror iva sahishnuna. Amanina mana Dena kirtaniya sada Hari.

That state of mind when we offer respect to others, don't expect any respect in return. And think oneself as a straw in the street. Humble position. Because Krsna consciousness is not about how big you are. Krsna consciousness is about how small you are. What kind of menial service you are performing for Krsna? Krsna looks at your love and your service. The person who does the vaccum or jhadu service here and the service of one who gives the lecture sitting on vyasasana. No difference. What kind of bhav we are creating for Krsna? How much devotion we have for Krsna? Is this the temporary devotion? Once in a blue moon? No. It has to be 24x7. So that one teaching, if you want to be Virat Svarupa then first try to be small vaman, small dwarf vaman.

That's one.

One must not judge a person from the outer look. What does it mean? Like Bali Maharaj. He misconstrued that this is a small brahmin. Woh Mera kya bigaad lega? Just a small Brahmin. He asked only three steps. He didn't consider. You know what in America we say, Don't judge the book from its outer cover. From outside its very nice but from inside the material is nothing. The same thing, how Krsna consciousness is not outward show. Krsna consciousness is inward. What we have in our heart. Hamara hriday me in kya basa Hai? Kaam, krodha, Mada, matsarya Sab Kuch Hai. How we can get rid of that? The simple method that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has given us and how to get rid of that Kaam, krodha, Mada, matsarya? By chanting the holy names. What is the holy name made of. 16 words and 32 syllables. What is that verse?

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna
Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

So don't judge the person from the outer look. Some people misunderstand many times. Khali Tilak lagane se kant mein mala pehne se haath mein Japa mala lene se koi devotee nahi ho jaata Hai. What kind of thoughts he is carrying? What kind of bhavana he is carrying? What kind of bhava he is carrying for Krsna and His associates and His devotees. That's very important.

In that respect we can give another example. That of Jada Bharata. Jada Bharata was what? He was a mudha. Right? But he was a really exalted personality within the heart. Even Rishabdev. He was lying in a place where people were throwing stones on him but He was an incarnation of Godhead. Tirthankar in Jainism, Rishabdev. One of the first Tirthankar. So dont judge a person like how Bali Maharaj made a mistake.

Third teaching
In order to obtain Lord's mercy, Bali Maharaj rejected his guru. Bali Maharaj rejected his guru. This is the third teaching. So anybody who is talking averse of Krsna, you should reject that.

Even in Treta Yuga Lord Ramachandra. Vibhishana rejected his brother to have the Lord's mercy. Bharat, His brother rejected his mother Kaikeyi. Right? Kiskeliye? In order to obtain Lord's mercy.

Prahlad Maharaj rejected his father in order to obtain the mercy of Lord Nrsimhadev. And Meerabai! She left her kingdom and the American hippies, they rejected illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, gambling to attain Krsna. Just by the order of Srila Prabhupada. That's the teaching we get. In order to obtain mercy give up all those bad people's association. That's the teaching we learn. Sukracarya ko chod diya. Apne guru ko. Prabhupad makes some very good points in this purport. Sukracarya from outside you know was just a materialistic guru. What is the meaning of guru? What is he supposed to do? He takes his disciple towards Krsna. So when Krsna is coming from front, Sukracarya asks him to leave him. Why should he leave Vamanadev. Because  Sukracarya knew that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Still he was trying to prevent him, Bali Maharaj. But because he had the mercy of Prahlad Maharaj, his grandfather, he understood the difference between the real guru's job and the real mercy from the Lord. So Bali Maharaj rejected that. So what do we learn from this? We should get rid of all the bad association. This is another teaching we learn.

sadhu sanga sadhu sanga sarva shastra koi
lava matra sadhu sanga sarva siddhi hoi

So with the proper association we can achieve so many perfections.

Fourth teaching
Bali Maharaj was a possessor. He was possessing the three worlds. He conquered. All the demigods he conquered and he was the possessor of three worlds. After few minutes he had nothing. After Vamanadeva took two steps He conquered all the two worlds, all the universes everything. However in the teachings we learn that he remained sthita pragya. Prabhupada mentions a nice point in the purport that he remains sthita pragya, equipoised. Regardless. He was the possessor of everything. After few minutes nothing. But he remained fixed in his determination. This is a very important point for all of us. He was fixed in his determination that yes, I'm going to fulfill my promise. So that determination is very important. Comittment is very important. If we are committed to Krsna then So be it. Be committed. Have firm determination. A devotee never deviates from the service of the Lord and executes his duties no matter what happens. That's what is firm faith in Krsna. It's not that aisa aaj Kar diya, Kal nahi. Firm determination. So lot of people, they have been in Iskcon for so many years, 30 years, 40 years. You know I joined Iskcon in 75. Here in Mumbai 75 - 76. Sridhara Maharaj made me a life member. In JUHU temple here. But because of the right association with all of your blessings Im still trying to be a devotee. So, the point is regardless of whatever happens. So aisa nahi Hai ki if any bad thing happens you say, this is all Krsna's fault. Because I trust Krsna now I have to suffer. NO. The understanding of a pure devotee is that if anything good happens its because of the mercy of Krsna and if anything bad happens its because of my past misdeeds. My past Karma. If we have this understanding then we will have firm determination for Krsna. Otherwise shaky ground. We don't want to walk on a shaky ground. Shaky ground means, Mein idhar jao ya udhar jao? You don't need that. It's not good in your devotional service.

So there is another teaching we learn. Even though Bali Maharaj was born in a demon family. It also gives you one more teaching. It's not important about your lineage, which family you are born in? You may be born in a brahmin family but if your karma is like a sudra then you are a sudra. You are lower than a sudra. A candala. But if we are born in a sudra family but our karma is like a brahmin then we are brahmins. We are devotees. We are Vaishnavas. Janma is not important. It's our karma that is important. Even though he is born in a demon family he is an exalted devotee. Firm faith in Krsna's holy name you know is important. Its important not what happens to us. If a bad thing happens it's our past deeds and if good thing happens it's because of the mercy of Krsna.

Vamanadev took three steps but Rupa Goswami says you can take only two steps. What are those two steps. Rupa Goswami says very simple.
Always remember Krsna and don't forget. Take only two steps. Vamanadev took only two steps. Okay fine. But for us Take only two steps. Always remember Krsna and never forget Krsna.

As I said you know beware of guru. It's important from the teachings of Vamanadev and Bali Maharaj caritra. Beware of bogus guru who is not interested in the disciple's spiritual progress and what are they interested in? Disciple's money. So that bogus guru ko reject Karna hai. So that is also another teaching. I made another point. Bali Maharaj had the whole world and everything but suddenly everything got lost. We can take another example from Srila Prabhupad. There is something we can learn from Srila Prabhupad. Nothing was working positive for Srila Prabhupad. How? His wife was against him. All the Gaudiya maths were fighting in between. During the time Prabhupad took initiation all the Gaudiya maths were fighting with each other. There was not a proper Gaudiya samstha. All his God brothers were non cooperative. Prabhupad's wife sold his Bhagavatam for just some tea and biscuits. You understand what I'm saying? His shop was burnt. While going to United States he had couple of severe heart attacks. Nothing was working. But did he say. Okay so many calamities are bestowed upon me. I'm going to quit. Chod Diya Bhagavan ko Prabhupad ji ne? Yes or no? Firm faith. Kuch bhi ho Gaya no problem. Maaro bhi ya raakho bhi. Prabhupad rewrote one bhajan on Jaladuta. What did he write?

bhakti nahi bheda nahi name khuba doro
bhaktivedanta nama eve shastra koro

I don't have any devotion in me but I have firm faith in the Holy name. So, he had that determination. Mazbooth thay woh. I have firm faith  in the Holy names and I have firm faith in the Spiritual master's words. So because of those two things Prabhupada has established all this. So many temples all over the world. So he had taken only 40 rupees. There was a joke. That Prabhupad was sitting up there and a big businessman came and Prabhupad introduced him that here is Mr so and so and he is a big businessman. So Prabhupad introduced him to his disciples. That big businessman said, Prabhupad, I'm not a big business man. You are a big businessman. You had only 40 Rs in your pocket and look now you are the proprietor of so many temples all over the world. So Prabhupad simply said, then why don't you join my business? So Prabhupad has never deviated from his firm faith in Krsna's holy name. That is also another teaching.

Now, as you know that Bali Maharaj. He is one of the twelve Mahajans. Even though born in a demon family,

svayambhuva narado sambho kumaro
kapilo mano prahlado janako bhishmo
balir vyasakim vyam

This is the verse in Bhagavatam spoken by Yamaraja telling his yamadutas. O Yamadutas there are twelve Mahajans. What is the meaning of Mahajan? They are very perfected in the science of Krsna consciousness. They have chosen the path. They follow the path of Sanatana Dharma. They are authorities and exalted Vaishnavas. Those are Mahajans. Svayambhuva means Brahma  Svayambhuva Narado, Sambho Shiva, Prahlad means Prahlad Maharaj, Bhishma Pitamah, Balir is Bali Maharaj, Vyasaki means Sukadeva Goswami, God of Death is Yamaraja, woh bhi ek Mahajan Hai. So the point is even though he was born in a demon family, he became a Mahajan. What is the reason? Because he had firm faith in Krsna's holy names. Bali Maharaj remains fixed in his determination to satisfy the Supreme Lord. So that is also firm faith. Very fixed and focused. Bali Maharaj is an ideal example of full surrender.

sravanam kirtanam vishnoh
smaranam pada sevanam
arcanam vandanam dasyam
sakhyam atma nivedanam

Atma nivedanam mein bhi Bali Maharaj ka aata Hai. One who got perfection by performing one of the nine processes of Nava yudha bhakti is Bali Maharaj. Just by atma nivedanam, surrendering of oneself he got perfection. And also if you look at it there are nine processes of surrendering. He is an ideal example of surrender.

Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote one very nice bhajan

dainya atma nivedana gupta tevana vara
avashyibhe sive krsna vishvasavana pal
bhakti anukula matra karaye sweekara
bhakti prati kula bhava vrajan angikara

What is the meaning? There are six processes of surrender.
Bali Maharaj is an ideal householder. And he got perfection by surrendering, atma nivedana. Full surrender.

In surrendering process there are six kinds Saranagati. Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote a book called Saranagati. And in that Saranagati he wrote several bhajans under each heading. Like Dainya. Dainya means humility and meekness. Humbleness. He wrote several bhajans. Atma Nivedanam. He wrote several bhajans. In each category in the six processes of surrender. And this Bali Maharaj is an example of the surrender process.

And then in one of that song Atma Nivedana. One of the song was Manasa deho geha.

mānasa, deho, geho, jo kichu mor
arpilū tuwā pade, nanda-kiśor!

So what Bhaktivinoda is writing. He is writing with a very humble state of mind. Whatever Bali Maharaj said. You take the third step on my head. Right? Whatever possession I have, I am going to offer it to Krsna, O son of Nanda Maharaj.

mānasa, deho, geho, jo kichu mor
arpilū tuwā pade, nanda-kiśor!

So that is called surrender. Surrender process. And what else he is writing further?

sampade vipade, jīvane-maraṇe
dāy mama gelā, tuwā o-pada baraṇe

Whatever happens. Either I'm in a good condition or bad condition. That is I'm surrendering to you.

marobirakhobi - jo iccha tohara
nitya-dasa prati tuwa adhikara

Whether you slay me or protect me or you keep me. It doesn't matter. I'll surrender unto you. You send me to hell or heavenly planets it doesn't matter. I'll accept whatever you give me. That is surrender. Like Bali Maharaj. Right? He has surrendered himself.

kita-janma hau jatha tuwa das
bahir-mukha brahma-janme nahi as

If you give me birth again. If you desire so. If you give me birth as a worm in a stool I'll accept but on one condition. You give me the home of a pure devotee.

So like that. That is called surrender. Atma Nivedana. There is a nice bhajan. You can listen. You can refer to that bhajan.

I'll end this class here.

Thank you very much !!

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna

Any questions or comments?

Q) In Bhagavad Gita, Lord says two times that He does not interfere in the lives of living entities .
Interfere? Yes, what is meant by that?
He says that you live independently. I will not interfere.
You have a free will. Yes.
But at the same time He says that knowledge, forgetfulness, remembrance all come from Me. That means indirectly controlling our life. These are very sharp contrasts.

A) What is the meaning of knowledge? Knowledge about what? Yes. We are talking about the spiritual knowledge. He was telling Arjuna. Five Pandavas and Duryodhana on two sides. Krsna in front of both of them. But one realized that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the other did not realize that. So the Smrti is not that. Krsna is that. If He wants to bestow that mercy, Krupa, He gave that Krupa to Bali Maharaj. So, if He wants to bestow that mercy. But if He wants to take that, then you can be forgetting Krsna. Like Duryodhana. Even though He was in front of him. Apoanamca. So that forgetfulness also comes from Krsna.

Mayavadi Krsnera aparadhi

Mayavadi never understands Krsna. Because they are always aparadhi. They are always offenders of Krsna . So Krsna never bestows His mercy on them. So, they don't have any form of Krsna. They don't believe in form. The Mayavadis. Always in Brahman. They are the offenders of Krsna. Krsna sees only those people upon whom He can bestow His mercy. That means how we can understand this?

Be a devotee of Krsna and Krsna will bestow His mercy upon you. He will not give forgetfulness. Like Dhruva Maharaj. Like Rupa Goswami says. Always remember Krsna. Never forget Krsna. It comes from where? If you are a sincere devotee of Krsna.

Q) He gives remembrance and forgetfulness only in spiritual matters or material matters also?
Yes. For a devotee remembrance of Krsna is always there. Striving for.

Grantharaj Srimad Bhagavatam ki jai!!
Srila Prabhupad ki jai!!
Gaura Bhakta vrinda ki jai!!
Nitai Gaura Premanande!!
