Srila Prabhupada On Cow Protection

There is also a prayer in the Vishnu Purana that states:

namo brahmanya-devaya

go-brahmana-hitaya ca

jagad-dhitaya krsnaya

govindaya namo namah

My Lord, you are the well-wisher of the cows and the brahmanas, and You are the well-wisher of the entire human society and the of the entire world.

Purport: In this prayer we see that special mention is made of the cows, indicating that special protection must always be given to the cows who are very dear to the Supreme Lord. The Lord is very fond of cows and we are encouraged to give reverence and love to the cow. For the cowherd men and the cows, Krsna is the supreme friend. Therefore, He is worshiped by the prayer “ namo brahmanya-devaya go brahmana –hitaya ca”. His pastimes in Gokula, are always favorable to the brahmanas and the cows, His first business is to give all protection to the cows and the brahmanas. In fact ,comfort for the brahmanas are secondary, and comfort for the cows are His first concern ( Srimad Bhagavatam 10.8.16 Purport)

                                                                           MILK- THE MIRACLE FOOD

The protection of cows maintains the most miraculous form of food, that is milk for maintaining the higher tissues of the brain for understanding higher aims of life. Milking the cow means drawing the principles of religion in a liquid form. Panca-gavya, the five products received from the cow, namely milk, yogurt, ghee, cow dung and cow urine, are required in all ritualistic ceremonies performed according to the Vedic directions. (Srila Prabupada letter to Rupanuga Dec 1975)

“Panca-gavya, the five products received from the cow, namely milk, yogurt, ghee, cow dung and cow urine are required in yajna ceremonies including the installation of deities. Cow urine and dung are uncontaminated , and since even the urine and dung of a cow are important, we can just imagine how important the animal is for human civilization. Therefore the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krsna, directly advocated “go-raksya”, the protection of cows”

Unfortunately because people in the Kali Yuga are mandah-all bad, and sumanda-matayah, misled by false conceptions of life, they are killing the cows in the thousands. Therefore they are unfortunate in spiritual consciousness, and nature disturbs them in so many ways, especially through incurable diseases like cancer and through frequent war among the nations. As long as human society continues to allow cows to be killed in slaughterhouses, there cannot be any question of peace and prosperity. Srimad Bhagavatam Purport 8.8.11

We must have sufficient pasturing grounds to feed the animals all round. We have to maintain the animals throughout their lives. We must not make any program for selling them to the slaughterhouses. This is the way of cow protection. Krsna, by His practical example taught us to give all protection to the cows. The mercantile class is meant for producing food grains and distributing them to the complete human society so that the whole population is given a chance to live comfortably and discharge the duties of human life. The mercantile class is also required to give protection to the cows in order to get sufficient milk and milk products, which alone can give the proper health and intelligence to maintain a civilization perfectly meant for knowledge of the ultimate truth. (Srimad Bhagavatam 2.5.37 Purport)

Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 1,Ch16, text 2.3.4

Once, when Maharaja Pariksit was on his way to conquer the world, he saw the master of kali yuga, who was lower than a sudra, disguised as a king and hurting the legs of a cow and a bull. The king at once caught hold of him to deal sufficient punishment.

Purport “ The king cannot tolerate insults to the most important animal, the cow. Human civilization means to advance the cause of the brahminical culture, and to sustain it, cow protection is essential. There is a miracle in milk , for it contains all the necessary vitamins to sustain human physiological conditions for higher achievements. Bharminical culture can advance only when man is educated to develop the quality of goodness, and for this there is prime necessity for food prepared with milk , fruits and grains. Maharaja Pariksit was astonished to see that a sudra ,dressed like a ruler, was mistreating a cow, the most important animal in human society.

Suta Gosvami said: After reaching that place, Maharaja Pariksit , observed that a low –caste sudra, dressed like a king, was beating a cow and a bull with a club, as if they had no owner”

The bull was as white as a white lotus flower. He was terrified of the sudra who was beating him, and he was so afraid that he was standing on one leg and urinating.

Although the cow is beneficial because one can draw religious principles from her, she was now rendered poor and calf less. Her legs were being beaten by a sudra. There were tears in her eyes, and she was distressed and weak. She was hankering after some grass in the field.

Purport: The next symptom of the age of kali is the distressed condition of the cow. For a sanathanist (follower of Vedic principles) it is the duty of every householder to have cows and bulls and other household paraphernalia, not only for drinking milk, but also for deriving religious principles. The  calf is not only beautiful to look at, but she also gives satisfaction to the cow, and she delivers as much milk as possible. But in the Kali yuga, the calves are separated from the cow as early as possible. The cow stands with tears in her eyes, The sudra milkman draws milk from the cow artificially , and when there is no milk then the cow is sent to be slaughtered. These greatly sinful acts are responsible for all troubles in present society.
