this age people are generally situated in the lower modes of passion
and ignorance and are lazy, misguided, disturbed, quarrelsome,
short-lived and unlucky. In these modes we are not able to serve
Krsna. It is our constitutional position to serve someone. If we are
not serving Krsna, we are serving maya. We may serve our family,
society, country, business, automobile or whatever. It is because
service is our nature. We are simply lacking knowledge of where to
direct the service. Service is meant to be rendered to Krsna because
the only master is Krsna.
When we come to our spiritual senses and realize that prakrti, maya is
working under the instructions of Krsna (BG 9.10) and 'we' belong to
the spiritual nature, then we can understand that our real business is
to engage in Krsna's service.
Krsna says in Bhagavad Gita, 913, "O Son of Prtha, those who are not
deluded, the great souls are under the protection of the divine
nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know
Me as the Supreme Persoanlity of Godhead, origibal and inexhaustible."
There are many isvaras or controllers but the supreme isvara is Krsna.
Ekale isvara Krsna, ara sab bhrtya (CC Adt 5.142). As soon as one
attains this realization, he has attained perfect realization. Foolish
people say bhakti is for ajnanis or less intelligent, but this is not
the case. Krsna indicates that after many many births, the 'jnani' or
man in 'knowledge', surrenders unto Him. Only realizaing that I am
spirit soul is not sufficient. Curing the fever is good but one must
also regain his strength and appetite to be cured fully. Similarly,
one has to engage in spiritual activity and that activity is bhakti.
Devotional service beginning with hearing & chanting the glories of
the Lord which are in themselves virtous and glorious when chanted are
so powerful that by the devotee's service all the knot's of misgivings
in the heart are pierced and everything becomes revealed. Knowledge
and renunciation are not perfect unless joined by devotional service.
