In Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says in verses 16.23-24
yah shaastra vidhim utsrjya / vartate kaama kaaratah
na sa siddhim avaapnoti / na sukham na paraam gatim
tasmaac chaastram pramaanam te / kaaryaakaarya vyavasthitau
jnaatvaa shaastra vidhaanoktam / karma kartum ihaarhasi

"He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination. One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated."
Guru, saadhus and shastras help us to lead our lives in a regulated manner. They are like light-house for us in this ocean of material darkness. As long as we take shelter of them, we will be able to cross over the darkness and live peacefully. But if we ignore them then we are bound to be drowned in darkness of ignorance. Whether it is devotional service or any activity in material life, we should learn the process of how to perform the same from experienced souls. We should not wrongly think that we know everything and ignore their advice and scriptural injunctions. If we try to do things on our own in a whimisical manner, then we will suffer great loss. On the other hand if we do things based on our limited perceptions, and imperfect senses we are bound to suffer.
The following is an instructive moral story by His Divine Grace Bhaktisiddantha Saravati Thakura. In the village Bilaspur, there lived a blacksmith named Vamacaran. Once he went to visit his potter friend in village Haripur. When he met his friend he saw that he was busy with lot of orders. So he offered to help him with his work. So that way, they can finish all the work faster and then have a nice time together. His friend agreed to this offer. Vamacaran saw the potter working with hammer. So he also decided to use the hammer and shape the pots in a better manner to make his friend happy. He thought that as a blacksmith he has been using the hammer daily in his job. So he thought that this should be child's play for him and started to hammer the pots. But since he didn't know the technique with which the potter was using the hammer, he broke all the pots.
The manner in which the blacksmith hammers iron to give shapes to it is not meant for a potter to model clay. The method and technique of both of them are entirely different. So without learning a process under proper guidance one should not act whimsically.
I pray at the lotus feet of Srila Gurudev, Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krishna so that I give up my whimsical nature, remember their instructions and practise the same.
Thank you very much.
